We are alone in the universe

Posted 18 Apr 2015 by Man-wai CHANG Post: What fusion produces are 14 MeV neutrons. Having worked with neutrons in my youth, I know they are bad beasts. They can destroy any material in a short time. So the "first wall" in a fusion reactor shall have to be substituted in a short time. But of course it will be radioactive, so the substitution shall have to be made by robots, not by human beings. So engineering problems in a fusion reactors will be huge, even when plasma physics problems are solved. Good luck. That's why the Sun doesn't have "walls"? :) Instead of trying to contain fusion using magnetic walls, could we use gravity instead? |

Support for AMD Radeon R9 200 Series
(Message 1656457)
Posted 24 Mar 2015 by Man-wai CHANG Post: Greetings, one of my GPU's AMD Radeon R9 200 Series ( Tahiti core ( power color brand )) does not seem to be processing any workunits for any project. Is this particular unit currently supported? Three other AMD/ATI GPU's are processing work units normally.. There was no work-unit from Astropulses in the past few months. I read that they are returning soon.... BTW, I am also a Radeon user: R9 285! |

AMD CPU tips
(Message 1656456)
Posted 24 Mar 2015 by Man-wai CHANG Post: Here are a few things that help my AMD machines crunch just a tiny bit more. None of this will give you a breakthrough jump in performance but every little bit helps. I have no idea if any of this will effect Intel and don't really care since they don't need any help:) The CPU's I use to test these tweaks are an FX-8370, Phenom II X4 965, and Phenom II X6 1055T I am overclocking AMD FX-6300@4Ghz with Radeon R9 285! :) |

Windows 10 may put SETI@home in Danger
(Message 1656455)
Posted 24 Mar 2015 by Man-wai CHANG Post: I am a am testing Build 10036 of Windows. I notice that the new method for choosing screen savers in this build does not allow one to chose an external screen saver. It this goes goes through, Windows 10 will kill elective screen savers as far as I know. There may be ways to save but Ill have to experiment on my own system. Win 10 is still a technical preview, so don't conclude so soon. OTOH, no harm to complain this limitation against Micro$oft! |

WinServer 2012 R2 Essential and BOINC
(Message 1656449)
Posted 24 Mar 2015 by Man-wai CHANG Post: As for GPU computing,... you must have a user logged into the server at all times to allow GPU crunching. If your server reboots for any reason and remains at the login screen, you will not be crunching on the GPU. Thanks! I guess I should stay with BOINC 5.x then. :) Will future versions of BOINC solve these problems in Win Servers? |

Marvin crashed
(Message 1637927)
Posted 5 Feb 2015 by Man-wai CHANG Post: It appears that the root partition filled on marvin (rapidly) while I was AFK, for no reason that I am aware of, which caused it to crash. Nobody is at the colocation facility right now, so the astropulse DB is down. I'll try to get remote accesses for a reboot, but chances are that marvin is down until monday morning. Are they Seagate hard disks? You might want to consider Toshiba? :) |
