Posted 7 Nov 2006 by Thierry Van Driessche Post: help...not sure where to post.....i just installed boinc....which i really don't like but it keeps saying communication deferred...not sure if that means seti is running or not? Your host downloaded one WU. To see if it crunching, you can open Boinc Manager, assuming you are using that configuration, and go to the tab “Tasksâ€Â. In that tab, you will be able to see what the application is doing. For info about using Boinc, see the Owner's Manual at the Boinc Wiki. |

If needed, go to the tab “Projects†select “Seti@home†and hit the “Update†button. Hope this helps. |

(Message 452728)
Posted 7 Nov 2006 by Thierry Van Driessche Post: When my pc run the software after doing some percent of works it finish it and when i report it to server it shows me that i had client error.i want to know how i can solve this problem? You had on one WU following error exit code -1073741502 (0xc0000142) This error is, according to the Boinc Wiki, due to over stressed hardware, usually by heat or due to flaky, or bad device drivers. Check you have the latest DirectX driver and the latest video drivers. If after upgrading these ones you still have the problem, a possible solution to avoid the problem is not using the screensaver. |

(Message 452726)
Posted 7 Nov 2006 by Thierry Van Driessche Post: i used to run Seti years ago and just reinstalled...it seems that my comp is doing the work but i get an error when i try to reach my account manager...i am not getting credit for work done yet it appears to be working...anyone have a clue? I don’t have any personal experience with the Account Manager, but I guess you attached to the Seti project by using the wrong way. If you wanted to attach to the Seti project and didn’t’ used BAM or GridRepublic, you should detach and attach to the project by using the “Tools†“Attach to projctâ€Â. I hope this will help. If not, please come back. |

Posted 5 Nov 2006 by Thierry Van Driessche Post: Thanks, Aurora. I’m afraid that if you didn’t copy and paste the entire Boinc folder that the earlier WU’s will be lost as the information about those WU’s are stored in different xml files directly under the Boinc folder. |

You downloaded one Wu that was interrupted in crunching as you detached from the project, which wasn't needed as normally everything should have been working fine. Apparently you attached again to the project and your host downloaded a new WU after that. For info about using Boinc, see the Owner's Manual at the Boinc Wiki. |

QUESTION FOR SEARCHING DATA
(Message 449255)
Posted 3 Nov 2006 by Thierry Van Driessche Post: I am new to SETI. Is it possible to search through the data either while or after it has been crunched to look for specific power ranges, periods, etc? Or are we limited to viewing the data only as it is searched? Thanks You can use SETI@home-MapView together with BoincLogX. Mapview gives you the possibility to view a lot of details about the spikes, gaussians, triplets and pulses. Here you can find all the add-ons for Seti/Boinc. |

Multipal work units
(Message 447935)
Posted 1 Nov 2006 by Thierry Van Driessche Post: It might be interesting to look in the global_prefs.xml file to the value of work_buf_min_days As you reinstalled Boinc, your host is using the default value of Boinc. The default value for the "connect to" is I believe 0.1 days. As it is known, the “general preferences†on the server at Seti doesn’t update the preferences on the host due to some bug on the server side. This means that even if the general preferences at the server is set to 10, very probably this value is not the one used by your host due to the fact you reinstalled Boinc from scratch. If the value found in the xml file is 0.1 day, you could change that value to 10. In order to do so, quit Boinc and edit the xml file with o.a. notepad and save the file after editing. |

(Message 439338)
Posted 18 Oct 2006 by Thierry Van Driessche Post: Raise your "connect every 'x' days" interval slightly (maybe 0.2 to start, then up by 0.1) until you've got two or three work units, and then BOINC won't need more work right away when it hits a noisy WU. There is actually, since several days, a problem with the setting of the general preferences: when making changes to it and hitting the "Update" button of the Boinc Manager makes no changes to the host. Admin are aware of the problem. |

Question regarding tasks
(Message 439249)
Posted 18 Oct 2006 by Thierry Van Driessche Post: I'm currently using bonic version 5.4.11 running seti. Because some of my systems are not constantly on the net, is there a way to download multiply tasks for a project? I would like to pull down 5 or 10 tasks, and have the system process before uploading them. Any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks Cache setting of WU Caching WU’s can be done by doing the following: --> "Your account" --> "Preferences" --> "General preferences" --> "View or edit" which brings you here There, in "Network usage", change the "Connect to network about every xx days" to some 1 or 1.5 days. After that, in Boinc Manager, go to the tab "Projects", select Seti@Home and use the button "Update" to bring the new value over to your host. Keep an eye on the tab "Messages" after clicking the update button to be sure the new value is brought over. By doing this, you can manage how much WU's are downloaded. You can repeat this sequence as long as you want. Keep in mind the WU's have a deadline of 14 days in order to get credit. |

Recovering Classic password not available
(Message 438983)
Posted 18 Oct 2006 by Thierry Van Driessche Post: I've tried this several times, and it doesn't seem to work. I keep getting a "Bad password" error for my Classic account. So I logged in using my classic account, changed the password, tried again ... still doesn't work. On that page, in the outmost upper part you need to fill in the e-mail address of Seti Classic and in the lower part "... or if you've already created a SETI@home/BOINC account and want to link it to your SETI@home Classic account:" fill in the Email address of your existing SETI@home/BOINC account the Account key of your SETI@home/BOINC account and your SETI@home Classic password and use the "link to existing account" button. If this is not working, then some of the given info is not correct. |

Q&A regarding cooling
(Message 438718)
Posted 17 Oct 2006 by Thierry Van Driessche Post: For those interested. I went digging in my old Seti Classic software and still have some WU there. This is the experiment I made. I had Seti/Boinc running for some 5 hours, shut it down for some 5 minutes and switched to Seti Classic, recorded the temperature for the time it was running, quit the software while the temperature was still recorded, switched back to Seti/Boinc and so on. The final result of the temperature for running Classic can be seen here while it was running for some 10 minutes and the final temperature for running Seti/Boinc can be seen here. For info, I have an Intel P4 2.4GHz that is over clocked at 2.928GHz. As can be seen on the 2 different graphs, the difference in temperature is only some 3 degree C or 5 degree F. And also the temperature as measured is fully acceptable. BTW, the room temperature was some 20 degree C or 68 degree F. What is important: 1. Check the cooling capacity of your heat sink and fan, which can be done by using a temperature controller software which can be downloaded at several websites. This will give you the info what is the temperature without using Boinc and while using it. 2. If there is any abnormal heating when running Boinc, check some points like the following 3. Check if the heat sink is well attached to the CPU 4. Check dust on the heat sink as well as on the fan of it. If present, blow it away or clean it accordingly. Cleaning dust from there can lower the temperature several degrees, especially on a PC where the heat sink has never be cleaned 5. Leave room around the case in order to evacuate the heat properly 6. If needed place a fan that blows air inside the case and one that sucks the air outside, which is what I am using. It is also known that laptops have less efficient cooling compared to desktops. |
