Gosh... downloads are extremely slow and erratic again. It seems to me as though they should have leveled out by now.

[sigh] Oh well...

Since the servers came back up this time... WU's are very slow and erratic downloading. It's taking me forever to get 25 WU's... like almost an hour or more.

WOW... Matt.... thanks for the very specific update. Congrat's on getting the Gbit-link to the outside world. That will surely make things a lot better... in some ways.

And... a hearty "thank you" to all of the people who work on SETI.... and keep it going.

Patience???? LOLOLOL... in this "everything instant" society, patience is a fast fading form of respect.

This time I was fortunate enough to have full queues on each cruncher, so I can keep on grinding until at least Monday.... if they can't remedy the problem today. <sigh>

I am not alone, seriously. There's shadowy creature that follows me almost everywhere I go. It's scary, and is usually so close to me that it feels almost like a second skin. Thus far, it has made no attempt to cause me harm. And it has made no attempt to communicate with me. It mimicks every move I make. Often in a distorted manner. Is it trying to learn Earth culture? I'm just not sure.

At night, it seems to blend into the darkness. And that is scary, because I can't see it. It's been with me for many years now. So, I suppose it means me no harm. But, I still worry that one day it'll be done with me. And then what?

So many times I've tried to escape it, sometimes by running as fast as I can. Other times I try to blend into a large crowd of people, but when I emerge it is still with me. <sigh>

I suppose I'll just have to tolerate its presence, for however long this shadowy creature chooses me as its host.

10) Message boards : Number crunching : I'm a little confused. WIN 7 recognizes ALL cores (Message 983135)
Posted 24 Mar 2010 by Profile FrostKing9
Post:
I'm a little confused. First my machine:

Themaltake SPEDO case
i7-950 processor, FOUR cores (NO hyperthreading)
Win 7 Professional
ASROCK x58 Deluxe MB (newest BIOS)
12GB GSKILL Trident memory
Silverstone ST1500 PS
nVidia 196.21 drivers

My unit will recognize and utilize any combination of up to FOUR video cards that I install.... NO SLI. But, the Silverstone 1500-watt PS will only handle up to TWO GTX-295's, four cores running independently at full bore, per Silverstone's.... GPU Suppport List

I know this is true because I had two GTX-295's, one GTX-275 and one GTX-260 all running SETI@home full-bore no SLI, all six cores humming out work units, and after about one month PIN-10 of the 24-pin MB connector melted, messing up the PS and the MB. I had to replace both, and that was expensive.

Yesterday, I installed a second PS in the bottom front of my Thermaltake SPEDO case, 1200-watts, which should handle an addtional two GTX-295's. I jumpered between the green and black pins on the MB end of the 24-pin cable on the second PS, to make that PS stay on while it is plugged in.

It ran excellently on SETI@home with FOUR GTX-295's, all eight CUDA cores pumping out work units.... for about 45-minutes.

Then the second PS suddenly went off and will not come back on. Something inside of it died, but there was no unusual sound or any odor. Which I suspicion relates to a power problem on the outlets in my office area, not enough juice to feed a 1500-watt PS and a 1200-watt PS from that one line. I need to run another outlet from the breaker box to feed the second 1200-watt PS.

My point being, that with dummy plugs installed on the second, third and fourth video cards, and the right settings in nVidia control panel... and the right MB... WIN 7 recognizes and handles up to eight cores of four video cards. Just don't try running all of them at full-bore for very long... not even on a 1500-watt PS.

YEP.... my pending credit jumped by 170,000 so far... so I think the server accepted the WU's at some point, but didn't clear them from my TRANSFERS queue. Then they reported again.... when the system came UP this evening.

WHEW... that's a relief.

If you're reported them once, then you report them again, you're not going to get extra credits for reporting them the second time!!!

No, Claggy... they all were reported once. Unless the SETI system somehow recorded them twice from each of my three crunchers.... as all three now gave me the same messages from the server.

I sure hope that's a cruel joke.... and not the way SETI recorded all of the crunching my units have done. <sigh>... what a bummer.

I'm a diehard SETI cruncher. I prefer to run only SETI. BUT, but... I've taken to running MilkyWay when SETI is having problems, like now. Why? Because I now only use GPU's for crunching.

And I'm so used to paying the extra $100-per-month on my electric bill, that I'd likely fall over sideways with that extra $100 in my pocket. Or, I'd do something really stupid with that money... like bank it.

Anyway, bi*ching about the project's problems won't help. Donations, enough of them, will help. With well over 1-million participants in SETI... if everyone donated just $2.00, or the equivalent each year... SETI would probably have far fewer glitches and unexpected outages.

SETI, being an extremely popular project, requires much more from the equipment and bandwidth. We already know that bandwidth isn't up to what is really needed. And SETI operates on piecemeal, sub-par, equipment that's crammed into a tiny server closet without any backup cooling. When their A/C malfunctions, SETI goes down.

If SETI had the right equipment to operate on, that tiny server closet would not be adequate and they'd need a larger space with better cooling capacity.

So... all of the moaning and complaining does nothing to help SETI.

What can help is DONATIONS.... more of them... from more, or from all SETI participants.

it doesn't request the right amount of work for the cpu or gpu, and then sometimes it gorges!

What version of BOINC are you using?

I'd certainly have to agree with ^^ statement. And the problem seems to be in the 6.10.xx series, after 6.10.18. At least for me.

With 7 GPU's running in one cruncher (not using CPU's to crunch)... I usually kept about 3,000 work units in the queue. One morning I awoke to find almost 6,000 WU's in the queue. And I had the "Addtional Work Buffer" set to only 5.95 days.

That was in BOINC 6.10.36. It suddenly gorged overnight. I dropped back to 6.10.29 just an hour before the latest SETI problems started so I have no idea if 6.10.29 will handle the work queue right.
