Part of your request has been fulfilled just some days ago:
Look in the status page under 'state' the second line: 'Current result creation rate'.

Taking the easy way out, eh?

This is your first and only posting about problems with setting up BOINC (yes, it's B O I N C), not bonic.

Your only other posts referred to the classic stats and - to my knowledge - were ansered correctly.

Well, if you want to talk to the director general, this may be your way. Here are only other users who - normally - can provide help with that crap, that is working on more than half a million computers.

It's up to you.

44) Questions and Answers : Windows : merging credit from pre-boinc time (Message 220919)

Post:
You've done all you have to do. Go look in 'your account' - your Seti Classic stats is there.

It will be updated in the next weeks to the very last WU you have crunched - at the moment it shows stats as of last March.

Old WUs just show in your account. They do not convert into credit - the systems are not compatible.

The deferral of 10 minutes is normal. It's intended.

If you want a bigger WU cache, go to 'your account' -> 'general preferences' and set the value for 'Connect every...' to more than 0.1 days (default). You can set it to 10 days max, but it is recommended to stay below that. BOINC will then try to keep always enough work for the indiacated period on stock.

For my machines I have set it to 1 day.

Oh, and don't forget to press 'update' in BOINCmanager after the change.

George, if you are on dial up, it would be a good idea to have a bigger cache of WUs also.
Go to 'your account' -> 'general preferences' and set the value for 'Connect about every...' to a higher value. BOINC will then try to keep enough work for the indicated time. Don't alter this value in very big steps, although. I think, for the beginning 1 or 2 days should be OK.

Another idea: Just not use the screensaver!

I stopped displaying it right after the first days of seti-ing in 1999 because I want to have all free cycles for Seti and not have a screensaver eating up half of them.

MESSAGES TAB: some pc benchmark, last line is RED colored "No work from project"

That's the one we need. You can copy/paste the lines.

Do you mean the screensaver with 'cute graphics'? It depends on how you installed BOINC. If you instlled as a service the screensaver doesn't work.

Sure wish I could join the hundreds of thousands. I've been trying for three days to get my account on BOINC. It keeps telling me "account not found" even though I can see all my account info on the website. I've been through the Wiki and other resources and simply can't get connected. I've tried my account key and password and neither are working.

All I want to do is start crunching again with my old account.

I realize many are volunteers but I don't think there's a need to come down on the ".001%" that simply can't connect. I can get the other BOINC projects to work but not SETI.

I'd hate to abandon the project, especially since I've been a member since June, '99, but I may have to.

Regards,
Kory

Kory, please don't misinterprete me. There ARE problems sometimes, and sometimes they are so grave that we can't solve them in here but have to report to the devs.
My point was that BOINC is not ONLY problems but working for lots of volunteers just fine.

Your problem now:
I think it would be interesting to see what your 'messages' tab says. Can you copy/paste in here?

51) Questions and Answers : Wish list : is there a setiQ equivalent for BOINC? (Message 220375)
Posted 23 Dec 2005 by Profile barbarossa
Post:
Not sure its entirely true as I have a number of PC's which are not connected to the Internet but with SetiQ can receive work. Now they can't

Yup, but this is intended by the system. Seti expects the results to be sent by the same computer it delivered to.

doesnt help me at all coz boinc wont even download any work todo

As far as I can see it did download a WU.

Does BOINCmgr show something at the 'status' in 'projects' tab?
Is there anything in 'work' tab?

Can you copy/paste the lines of 'messages' tab in here?

David, don't confound things.

First confusion is: To read a lot of problems and thus think the thing doesn't work. Of course you read a lot about problems in here. It's a Q&A forum! People who are just happily crunching have no need to write in here, have they?
You can see the number (and the growth rate) of BOINC users in any stats website (e.g. this one.

Second confusion: This Q&A is not a complaint desk. It's a place where voluteers help other volunteers. Thus your 'you guys...' is needless.

54) Questions and Answers : Windows : The Team (Message 220359)
Posted 23 Dec 2005 by Profile barbarossa
Post:
The answer is simple: You can't. It's the founder alone who has 'administrator rights' for the team.
So my suggestion is: Either contact the founder or join another team or found a new one.

Ok, I left everything alone... but what is this that I am hearing of overheating/total meltdown? With the classic SETI, i left the program running all the time, and knew when it was doing work and when it wasn't. I'm not sure how to now observe work being done? Thank you!

I think you can forget about those horror stories, as I strongly guess that your machine is a desktop. I use a desktop computer with exactly the same processor and never have any overheating probs. Overheating virtually only occurs with (some) notebook computers and with overclocked computers.

As to observing BOINC: Open BOINC manager. In 'projects' tab you see the projects you are attached to and their status. In 'work' tab you see the WUs you have on stock and the status they are in. After some days you will also see some graphics in the 'statistics' tab. And if you REALLY want to know what's happening, you can dive into the 'message' tab...

BTW, there are some fine third party products which allow to observe your BOINC even better. See here.

56) Questions and Answers : Windows : Finished WUs (Message 219973)
Posted 22 Dec 2005 by Profile barbarossa
Post:
Hi, Yes I noticed the same thing, all machines have contacted the server on completion of individual WUs, but still appear in the work window as ready to report.

That's just one of the things that can happen when you set the 'connect to' value lower (I should have thought of that).
The results are immediately uploaded when they are finished, but they only report when you d/l new work. Your system, however, will not download new work for quite a while, because it has lots of cached WUs from the time when set to 10 days.

You can report those WUs manually by going to 'projects' tab, highlight Seti and then press 'update'.

57) Questions and Answers : Windows : Why isn't boinc uploading my results? (Message 219970)
Posted 22 Dec 2005 by Profile barbarossa
Post:
In 'transfers' tab you only see d/ls and u/ls at the very time they are happening - it mostly is empty.

But go to 'your account' -> 'view computers', then click the ID # of your machine and then the number of results (bottom of the page): You'll see that your system is working just fine.

Hi

This is not a complaint desk, but a help forum where users help other users.

Deferral of connection is built in to prevent all hosts hammering the servers. It doesn't actually hurt, when you build a bit of a WU cache. You can do that by going to 'your account' -> 'general preferences' and setting the value of 'Connect to network about every' to a higher number, e.g. 1 day.

Instructions are contained in the BOINC Wiki (follow the link in my sig - have a special look at the 'How to' guides).
In fact it seems that you did all you were supposed to - BOINC should handle the rest (unless you're on dial up - then you would have to make some additional settings).

I see that the Celeron machine has uploaded on the 18th the last time, although your computers all contacted Seti today and the others are seemingly uploading well. This seems a bit queer to me. Can you copy/paste the lines of the 'messages' tab in here?

Generally it's not a good idea to alter the 'connect to' in big steps - BOINC may react a bit nervously... although things will eventually straighten out.

Posted 22 Dec 2005 by Profile barbarossa
Post:
Yup. Leave most settings as they are.
Just alter things you know you want to set, such as 'Do work while computer is in use'.

Your computer has a HT processor, which means, it has two (virtual) processors. So don't forget to set 'On multiprocessors, use at most' to 2 processors. Your machine will then always be crunching 2 WUs at a time.

Later, when having some experience, you may want to set some other parameters.
