1) Questions and Answers : Getting started : Unable to merge IDs on same computer (Message 240459)

It compares certain things such as OS version and CPU type. If you upgraded to a newer OS version, it'll make it a new machine. You won't be able to merge them.

But I had the case several times that Seti thought I had a new machine even if virtually nothing had changed, and wouldn't let me merge them.

No big loss - Upon some time the 'old' machine will be shown without results (as they get cleared from the DB) and then you will be able to delete it from the list.

I must say...

No problem, you're perfectly right (as usual :-)= ).

What I meant, however, was not the 'learning' function of BOINC, but the fact that at a certain point BOINC calculates swiftly dwindling 'time to completion' (older versions even more than 5.2.x), such as did SetiQue in Classic. And when this value drops below the 'critical time', BOINC returns to normal.

23/01/2006 23:03:49||Suspending computation and network activity - user is active

This line tells us that you have set BOINC to only work when user is inactive. Of course, when you open BOINC manager, then you're active, and then it will show you only suspended resp. preempted work.

You can handle this in two ways:

If you really want BOINC only to work when the computer is inactive, then take note of the CPU time of the WU. Then let the computer be for a while, so that BOINC can get to work again. When look at the work tab next time, compare the CPU time to the one you noted - it should be somewhat higher now.

If you don't mind BOINC working in the background, then go to 'your account' -> 'general preferences' and change the value of 'Do work while computer is in use?' to 'yes'. (Unless you are running CPU- or memory-intensive applications such as image rendering you should not even notice that BOINC is working in the background).

Must I understand that I have too many jobs in my old computer?? :-((

In a way, yes. But nothing to worry. It's a feature, not a fault. With EDF BOINC tries to finish any WU within deadline.

Read about the EDF function in the BOINC-Wiki.

BTW: BOINC often only thinks it has to panic, as the remaining crunching time still is not very preciely measured. So, after some time, it may easily decide that the risk of missing a deadline is over, and goes back to normal.

no more "as of" in your stats from your accounts

I gather from the home page and your message that the classic totals are now migrated over. However, mine aren't showing under the "your account". Does it make a problem the fact that I joined May 16th 2005 after the inital March 05 snapshot? I've tried the migrate form and but to no avail - my email address and password are the same for both and have been for the life of my participation. After reading this forum, Ive looked in the user_info.sah file to glean my info - 1055wu's completed, and every field is as it should be, except my email field is blank. Could this be some kind of bug? Though I can still read my stats on the classic pages. Any help appreciated - like others here, I dont want to lose recognition of work that Ive done! I know it doesnt have a bearing on BOINC stats but even so :)

Ritchie, seems that you never activated your Classic account.
Do do that, use this form.

Yes, I think the whole conversion from seti@home classic to the boinc version might have messed things up. I tried to consolidate my old account with my new account, and when I did that on the website, it looked like it worked. But now the account I'm using to type this says I haven't communicated with the server since I installed it.

Seems as if you messed up two accounts. Look here. There are two accounts with your nick.
I think you should leave the one you are writing with in here and use the other one, as it contains all your credits and the Classic stats.

Can you remember the mail addy you used to create this account? (It MUST be an other than that you are using with this account, as the acocunts are defined by the mail addy and not the username). If yes, you can have resent your account key here.

wow, there sure are a lot of arrogant people out there

You felt Pooh's answer was arrogant? Well, I think it was absolutely correct. Pooh is one of the most patient people in here.

It is one thing we have always to tell newbies that BOINC needs no micromanagement. That is not meant deprecative but is a fact. BOINC normally knows better than you (or Pooh or me) what it has to do. We set the frame (in the 'preferences') and BOINC will duly fulfill these requirements.

Or did you resent the term 'debt'? It's a technical term used in BOINC. You may want to read more about these things in the BOINC-Wiki (Link in my sig.).

The problem is: If you have set BOINC to run only when idle, then you can't see it processing actively. As you move around the mouse and open things, your computer is active and then BOINC of course stops processing.

So you will have to find out indirectly:
Open in BOINC manager the work window, see which WU is maked as 'running' and note the CPU time and/or the progress percentage.
Then, after a while (longer than the time it takes for BOINC to activate) look up the same again and compare the figures.

Now to the changing of the account:

Do exactly what Pooh and RRipley have told:

First (to detach from the other account):

Set SETI to NO NEW WORK on the Projects tab. Allow the work to finish (keeping in mind the science is important to do). Once all WU are finished and report (nothing left in the WORK tab), then DETATCH from the project.

Second (to attach to your present account):

  • move to your personal profile here and change your password if not yet done
  • alter the cache size in your general preferences under Network usage first setting.
  • Open BOINC Manager, select menuitem Attach to Project
  • then enter the URL http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/
  • then press Next
  • then select "login to existing account"
  • two input fields appear
  • enter the email address you used to login here in the forum (the one with the address behind "Cliff Yuill, Sr")
  • enter the password (you've set in first item above)
  • then press Next

BTW: I wouldn't hesitate to give you my mail address, but it may be helpful for other volunteers to read about the progress in here.

Glad to see that a solution is under way. I couldn't log on too often in the last days.

Yes, it really easies things if you abandon 'Cliff' and stick to 'Cliff Yuill, Sr'. I was under the false impression that you wanted to crunch on with the same account you once began to. But as Pooh says: No stats lost, just one part of it being in another account.

You don't seem to be attached to Seti. Which projects are you attached to then? (In fact you should ask your question in their board).

If CPDN is one of them, it will need more than a few megs.

You can do several settings (valid thoughout all projects) in 'your account' -> 'general preferences' under 'Disk and memory usage'.

[edit]
Just had another thought: Do you lack space already for installing BOINC or attaching to a project? Then your HD must be pretty stuffed...
Sooner or later you would have to free some space anyway.
If your system is installed on several logical disks, as it was modern in NT times, then you should install BOINC to D: or E: or whatever your data disk is.

After 6 years of operation, SETI@home Classic sent out its last workunit. We will clean up and synchronize the Classic stats with the current SETI@home project in the coming weeks. Thanks to all SETI@home Classic participants for their tremendous dedication to the project. You made SETI@home into something of lasting significance.

For heavens sake stop trying to micromanage BOINC! Let it do its job.
After initial contact (and later after certain actions) Seti will wait 10 minutes before it sends a further WU. This is not a bug, this is a feature, as the servers otherwise would constantly be hammered by requests at certain times.
Message from server: Not sending work - last RPC too recent: 466 sec is just telling you that your request was too early and still in these 600 odd seconds.

If afterwardss (and if possible without actions from your side) it will not download, then the respective lines could give us a clue.

I did find the page that has the "link to account" function on it and it tells me my BOINC stuff is already linked to Cliff Yuill, Sr. Now just gotta get the WU's linked to it I guess. ???

Well, Cliff, you DID register this other account. And we can't tell you the mail address of it. You'll have to remember yourself.

But I can help youin finding out its account key:
In your BOINC directory (normally it's C:\\program files\\BOINC) you'll find a file called 'account_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml'. Open this file by doubleclicking it. The second line of the file looks somewhat like this:
<authenticator>aa123456789a12a123a1234a12345aa1</authenticator>
The string between <authenticator> and </authenticator> is your account key for the 'Cliff' account.

Once you have retrieved this key and remembered the mail addres you could have used when attaching to Seti, do exactly what I wrote in my precedent posting.

The Seti Classic stats will then pass over to the 'Cliff' account and from then on only use that account, either for working with BOINC or logging on to this website.

Oh, BTW, you've got a margin of some years to me. So perhaps you were in fact the better 'greybeard'...

First time I ever read something of this kind.

The problem seems to be with connecting to loacalhost.

Make sure that boincmgr.exe and boinc.exe are not blocked by the firewall (which they probably aren't - but just to be sure).
And make sure that ports 1043 and 31416 are not blocked by the firewall or by other software.

Hope some real guru shows up to take over...

I observed some issues during the whole day now.

At times the scheduler just decided not to send any work, at other times there was the -500 error. But eventually I always could upoad and received new work.

Therefore I think this 'problem' is only transient.
