1) Message boards : Number crunching : Problems under new OS X 10b (Message 1549299)

Post:
OS X 10.10b went up recently. Now have the following problem...

Previously (under 10.9.4) was running 3 ap and 2 cuda WUs. Now it runs only the 3 ap WUs. Front end of the log shows...

Starting BOINC client version 7.2.42 for x86_64-apple-darwin
log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task
Libraries: libcurl/7.26.0 OpenSSL/1.0.1e zlib/1.2.5 c-ares/1.9.1
Data directory: /Library/Application Support/BOINC Data
OpenCL: NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTX 780M (driver version 10.0.31 310.41.05b15, device version OpenCL 1.2, 4096MB, 4096MB available, 100 GFLOPS peak)
OpenCL CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4771 CPU @ 3.50GHz (OpenCL driver vendor: Apple, driver version 1.1, device version OpenCL 1.2)
SETI@home | Found app_info.xml; using anonymous platform
App version needs CUDA but GPU doesn't support it
SETI@home | [error] State file error: missing application file setiathome_7.00_i686-apple-darwin
App version needs CUDA but GPU doesn't support it
Missing coprocessor for task 04dc08ae.31005.890.438086664201.12.152_0
etc.

Task window shows the following for all cuda WUs...

Missing coprocessor for task 04dc08ae.31005.890.438086664201.12.152_0

Log also throws this error on a regular basis

Message from server: Your app_info.xml file doesn't have a usable version of SETI@home v7.

NO changes have been made to the BOINC setup. Prior to the OS upgrade it was running fine. After the upgrade (and the reinstall of BOINC as it requested on the restart) - the above mess.

Obviously I understand it's beta software. However - any thoughts appreciated.
2) Message boards : Number crunching : cuda on a new iMac help (Message 1454101)

Post:
Just got a new 8 core iMac with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4GB and BOINC 7.2.33. Also installed the NVIDIA cudadriver 5.5.28 as linked in the BOINC ReadMe.rtf. Have tried many searches with no results on setup. Would appreciate some help in putting the GPU to work. The system is currently running 7 v7 7.00 WUs (have the usage set to 90%), but no cudas.

Thank you.

basically it is showing that you've pretty much maxxed out your GPU. You might get a bit of a boost running 2 at a time but I doubt its worth the heat being put out

Tried and failed last week. See Message 1266727.

It generally takes 4-6 weeks for the RAC to (sort of) level out after makiing major changes, such as adding a new card or upgrading to a optimised client. Or even starting up a new system (although that tends to be more like 6-8 weeks).

Yep - very used to that. Now if they can just keep the servers up for a while...

another very simple test is running GPUz while processing a WU. If the GPU is maxxed out on 1 then it certainly won't run 2 efficiently

As suggested...

John, you did everything correct but I see now that you have a 9500 with only 512K memory, that is not enough. My 9500 has 1024K memory. Sorry to have raised your hopes on this but what happened should be considered normal considering you did not have enough GPU memory. At least now you know how to do it when you perhaps get a different video card.

Bill, not a problem at all. It was a good exercise, and, as you say, at least now I know for when I win the sweepstakes and can get a better card... ;-)

Thanks.

Well - it failed.

The restart of BOINC was good, and everything looked OK. There were 2 cudas running. However, after about 10 seconds I started getting these...

8/2/2012 08:31:09 | SETI@home | Task 07ap10ab.30197.16452.11.10.128_0 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file
8/2/2012 08:31:09 | SETI@home | If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project.
8/2/2012 08:31:09 | SETI@home | Starting task 07ap10ab.30197.16452.11.10.164_0 using setiathome_enhanced version 610 (cuda_fermi) in slot 7
8/2/2012 08:31:29 | SETI@home | Task 07ap10ab.30197.16452.11.10.164_0 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file
8/2/2012 08:31:29 | SETI@home | If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project.
8/2/2012 08:31:29 | SETI@home | Starting task 07ap10ab.30197.16452.11.10.94_0 using setiathome_enhanced version 610 (cuda_fermi) in slot 8
8/2/2012 08:31:46 | SETI@home | Task 07ap10ab.30197.16452.11.10.94_0 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file
8/2/2012 08:31:46 | SETI@home | If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project.

etc., etc.

So - as suggested - it appears that card doesn't have the brain space to handle two. Reset the counts (6 was correct - good memory) to 1 and all is well again.

My thanks to all for your help and suggestions!

Exactly how do I set that up (keep in mind the title of this topic!)? Would like to give it a try.

Fred,

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, my problem is pretty simple- out of work for over 3 years! Finances? Non-existent.

I got this 9500 used for 40 bucks. So far, a pretty good deal. It's really punching out data. I can put my hand on the card, heat sink, etc., and it feels 'normal' to the touch.

Current numbers are going up rapidly, and, even though I've been running Seti since '99, my user average is already way above what it has ever been, even running multiple computers. {Thanks, Joe - your suggestion seems to be working!}

Down the road - who knows? Maybe by then I'll have some $$ to be able to upgrade.

Thanks again.

Running Win7 Pro x64, quad-core processor, 8GB, BOINC 7.0.28, Lunatics 0.40 Wizard accepting all install defaults. app_info.xml has not been edited in any way.

Recently acquired a GeForce 9500 GT (I know - old) with the following specs...

Operating System: Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit (Service Pack 1)
DirectX version: 11.0
GPU processor: GeForce 9500 GT
Driver version: 301.42
DirectX support: 10
CUDA Cores: 32
Core clock: 550 MHz
Shader clock: 1375 MHz
Memory clock: 800 MHz (1600 MHz data rate)
Memory interface: 128-bit
Total available graphics memory: 4095 MB
Dedicated video memory: 512 MB GDDR3
System video memory: 0 MB
Shared system memory: 3583 MB
Video BIOS version: 62.94.1E.00.06
IRQ: 16
Bus: PCI Express x8

Currently the card is happy running only one work unit of cuda, cuda23, or cuda_fermi at a time. Can it handle more than just one work unit, and, if so, exactly what do I need to edit?

Been in computers as a profession for over 47 years, and running Seti since 26 May 1999. However, cuda is new stuff to me.

Thanks.
15) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : 0% task progress (Message 1143074)

Post:
Got up to a failure this morning - one task running fine, the other as described earlier. Activity showed only one setiathome process running. Quit BOINC, but the one process kept running. Quit that, then restarted BOINC. Now have two processes running. The 'failing' task was reset to zero and is now behaving properly.

So - is this a known problem, or do I have something else going on?

Thanks for the restart tip.

A few months ago my PPC G5 Mac started occasionally showing tasks with 0% progress. Right now the following...

Progress Status Elapsed Remaining
0.000% Running 4:56:53 ---

Elapsed is increasing, but both Progress and Remaining stay as shown. I have seen tasks that go above 20 hours with no change in Progress and Remaining. Waste of time, so I abort the task, which then pops up with a Computation Error. It's getting more frequent. Been doing Seti for over 12 years and this is the first time I've seen this problem.

Running 6.12.33, and 10.5.8 on the Mac. My PC does not have this problem.

Thoughts appreciated.

I am very sorry for the troubles !

No problem. As mentioned, my fault for not being more complete in my description.

John, you can also download AP 5.03 from my homepage and copy the AP 5.03 binary to the project folder and "sudo chown boinc_master:boinc_project the binaries in the project folders.

Is 5.03 necessary, now that 5.06 is happily in place where it belongs?

Thanks.

Sorry 'bout not giving better/more info on exactly what the situation was here. Some age-related problem, no doubt!

Thanks very much, folks!
