21) Message boards : SETI@home Science : What's our end point, realistically? (Message 1908313)

First Post disclaimer! Also, I am not a mathematician nor a physicist. But I'm interested enough to contribute modest CPU time to the effort, and curious enough to wonder, once we have some Southern Hemisphere data points of course, when can we say that we have 80% certainty (based on random assortment probabilities, granted), or 90% certainty, or 99% certainty, that there are no signals to find? (Umm, yeah, finding a signal moots this question.)

Thanks! Until then, crunching happily away,

Scott

I think once we are ready....they will beam a massive signal at where ever our radio scopes are aimed..so it does not matter where we are looking to be honest.
The main thing is that we are looking......its all about intentions...:-)

You forget the masses as you put it...never have to be ready...they will go along as they have done down through history...usually that meant going into war on behalf of a govenment who had a different agenda then the masses...
No. We under estimate the ability of people to change....many on here can probably remember when there was no such thing as a computer or the internet...or words like Google Yahoo and the like....
Religions will adapt...as they already are.......some things just can not be put off indefinitely...the digital age came when we were ready....
SETI is good...however I think the radio signal they will eventually pick will be shatteringly closer then we were expecting!!!
But it will be non human none the less...:-)

the whole world would go into panic. You'd have rioting in the streets, civil unrest, all major religions would collapse, governments would fall etc etc.

And what is this statement based on?
While I agree that there would be a period of adjustment...I really do not think it would be total collapse......and besides if they are close by....then when it is an acceptable time....they will make themselves known...and not through some shaky distant light in the sky shot with a 1960's type recorder...
There will be no mistake....There is no lid big enough...:-)

I think it is actually €20 million per year!!
It is a substantial amount....I see the Navy have just released some footage of an incident of San Diego....While it is clear that not all blurry pieces of light shot through the end of a milk bottle is an alien craft...it has to be considered properly when the level of eye witness accounts are experienced fliers....The French Government released a very good study back over 15 years a go...which due to its nature of only been published in French...did not get near as much publicity as it should have received....

Well our Earth based science is going to have to open up its views a bit more and not be so dismissive of all UFO sightings. Many have their reputations at stake and years of academic study, which does not allow them any wiggle room. However, as "Proof" is needed...we shall continue to await further developments on this front!

I have just read that the Pentagon has spent over €20 million dollars in secret looking into the UFO question again......
I think they know we are possibly been visited, simply because our Physics is beginning to show a lack of understanding to the Cosmos....so our kindergarten view that no life is visiting because of distances is becoming quite silly....

It took a bit longer than I thought it would, but we're back online. It'll probably be a few days before we have a full ready-to-send queue.

Now we can get back to finding ET.

Great news and great work!!!
Thank you....

Got over 25 errors recorded again....
Grrrr!!!!!!

. . Hi,

. . It seems you are only crunching on CPUs on all three rigs is that correct? If so then you should only have 100 tasks in each queue yet you have many more, so it is possible many of those have been ghosted. That is, sent to your machine but somehow lost in the shuffle. The result is your machine does not process them and they remain assigned to you until they time out. Those are the errors you are seeing, they are all tasks that have timed out while assigned to you. You have one GPU that should be able to process tasks if you wanted to use it, that is the Quadro card. It will crunch them much faster than your CPU can.

Stephen

?

Thanks for that information Stephen...

I was looking at Advent42's errors, which are time-outs, not connected to validator issues.

Thanks rob....I dont think I actually got them....as my wus usually all get done before deadline time.
They may be what you refer to as ghosts......I just use my cpu...no GPU stuff.
It's still crunching away regardless.....
