Landmark Ruling in New York: Elephant Denied Human Rights
"The writ of habeas corpus is intended to protect the liberty right of human beings to be free of unlawful confinement, it has no applicability to Happy, a nonhuman animal who is not a 'person' subjected to illegal detention," Chief Judge Janet DiFiore wrote in her ruling Tuesday.

"While no one disputes that elephants are intelligent beings deserving of proper care and compassion, the courts below properly granted the motion to dismiss the petition for a writ of habeas corpus, and we therefore affirm."

Happy Juneteenth.

Can the government decide if it is a holiday? EDD holiday list says open which means pay your taxes Monday. Try it and they say sorry, bank holiday, pay some other day. So are they going to have the people who process payments come in and sit at their desk twiddling all day?

There's nothing worse than trying to put a 6'+ frame into a vehicle that barely fits someone that just 5'10" and I'm convinced that some of them were designed by people who were only 5' tall. :-(

Former President Bill Clinton told "The Late, Late Show" host James Corden this week he had sent federal agents to Nevada's Area 51 to look for aliens when he was president in the 1990s.

"When I was president — and I had a chief of staff, John Podesta, who loves science-fiction — we made every attempt to find out everything about Roswell. And we also sent people to Area 51 to make sure there were no aliens in the deep of it, because Area 51's very important," Clinton told Corden as the crowd was laughing — although Clinton seemed to be serious.

How stupid can some people get?

2 men charged in fatal fireworks explosion that killed 4.

Two men were charged with murder in a house explosion near St. Louis that authorities say killed four people who were assembling fireworks in a garage.

St. Louis County prosecutors say 37-year-old Terrell Cooks and 43-year-old Seneca Mahan made fireworks and directed younger people on how to load the canisters and attach a fuse for lighting. They would then sell the fireworks to others. Neither Cooks nor Mahan had a license to make or sell fireworks.

Cooks and Mahan are each with three counts of second-degree murder and several other charges in Friday's explosion near the town of Black Jack. They were charged before a fourth victim died Saturday.

The victims in the powerful blast that shook other homes and blew out neighbors' windows were identified as Travell Eason, 16; Christopher Jones, 17; Damario Cooks, 18; and William Jones, 21.

Authorities have said a 12-year-old child was also injured in the explosion, but the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that police could not provide details Sunday about how many others were still hospitalized...
Pretty stupid it seems.

FFS!
Someone please tell me I've been transported to another dimension.
Meanwhile, under new legislation the government is expected to introduce this week, employers would be able to replace striking workers with agency staff.
Likely to come into force mid July.
Unbelievable
Haven't these numpties learnt anything from the P&O fiasco?

For approx. half of my working life, was a union man.
Saying that, I was always against un-necessary strikes & there were many of those back in the 70's & 80's.
That view was put on the back burner about a decade ago & all over a phone call which became quite heated.
Started off quite pleasant but changed rapidly.
The conversation topic changed to driving with myself mentioning that I missed driving nights for the Royal Mail.
He said that he loved working Xmas day & Boxing day at double time.
My immediate thought was:
No chance
No way Jose.
And said so.

The voice on the other end could be heard at the Channel Tunnel.
He hated being called a liar.
He was so adamant that I asked him was he employed by the Royal Mail.
Answer was NO, he was agency.
No wonder, had that being a Royal Mail driver it would be double time & a day in lieu (3x).

Let us hope that this is a win for the environment.

Feds issue draft assessment that could doom Minnesota mine.

The U.S. Forest Service issued a draft environmental assessment Thursday to lay the foundation for a proposed 20-year moratorium on copper-nickel mining upstream from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Formally, the proposal would “withdraw” from new mineral leasing for 20 years about 352 square miles within the Rainy River watershed in the Superior National Forest around the town of Ely. The plan threatens to doom the proposed Twin Metals mine near Birch Lake, which drains into a river that flows into the Boundary Waters. But it would not affect a separate project, the proposed PolyMet mine near Babbitt and Hoyt Lakes, which lies in a different watershed.

The Forest Service plans to start a 30-day comment period Tuesday when it publishes a notice in the Federal Register. The assessment was posted on the project website at go.usa.gov/xtaCw. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland will make the final decision on whether to approve the moratorium.

“The proposed mineral withdrawal aims to prevent further negative environmental impacts from future mining operations,” the Forest Service said in its announcement of the draft. “It also evaluates the impacts of future mining on important social, cultural, and economic values.”

Democratic U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum, who represents a St. Paul-area district and is sponsoring legislation to permanently ban copper-nickel mining in that area, welcomed the study, as did environmental groups that have been fighting the Twin Metals project for years. They say the risk of acid mine drainage poses an unacceptable threat to the country's most-visited federally designated wilderness area....

Further evidence that politicians talk out of the wrong end.
By-elections useless as indicator of future performance - Dorries
Earlier, we were telling you about the Twitter silence from Boris Johnson's Cabinet following the by-election losses.

Now Culture Secretary - and avid Johnson supporter - Nadine Dorries has tweeted to say the twin defeats are a reminder that the government must be "relentless in cracking on with the job of delivering".
But she also says by-elections are "useless" as an indicator of the future performance of parties at general elections.
Plus Johnson is dealing with challenges which "no PM or government has faced" since World War Two, Dorries says - such as the war in Ukraine, post-pandemic world and cost-of-living challenges.

Korean War
Rationing
Housing Crisis

I suppose in the eyes of numpties like Dorries, they were just hiccups.

You might not have heard of this battle, or know where it is, but it was fought by Americans.

100 years ago, a racist council made a move.
Little did they realise...
....100 years later, it would end up costing city taxpayers $413,000 a year.
Gotta love Karma. :-)
