The car manufacturers estimate the average electric car will be charged twice a week, so about 1000 charge/discharge cycles in 10 years.

Given the real world numbers posted and given the actual commute distances in the USA, I find the estimate to be well off the mark. Even assuming perfect conditions, daylight, no stops, car only used between home and work, parked on the weekends, I'd expect three times a week. Once you factor in weather, traffic jams, hills, the daily lunch run, the grocery runs, weekend shopping, the Sunday church run ... I'd expect it gets plugged in every day. 1000 charges comes before three years or 36 months.

OBW the 1000 number is the same number quoted when I got my very first iPod, a couple decades ago. I don't think battery tech is evolving in that direction.

My very quick search for U.S. commute distance or time indicates 16 miles each way, first item on list, and about 30 minutes each way form the census bureau .
Which would indicate to me that commuting would on average, account for one charge/week. Assuming about 2/3's the average manufacturers claimed distance for a medium sized sedan. The other third lost in using lights, wipers and heater or AC, etc

How Many Times do GAS Powered Cars get Fueled per week?

I Don't Believe Every One is Same. Some Fill Up when at 3/4 Full. Some at 1/4 Full. Others a Scooch Over Empty. Many At Empty.

Generator is OUT of GAS and Besides I Don't have a Generator to Car Charging Appliance/Cord. OOOOPs.

Many Gas Stations are Open when Power Goes Out.

When it is Time to Replace Batteries in Electric Car, I'm Bettin' da COST of REPLACEMENT would EQUAL or MUCH MORE in $$$$$$$ than Payin' for GAS Years and Years and Years.

Have you seen the way that the price of lead/acid batteries has gone up over the last 6-8yrs?

And then there's clutches/torque converters, exhaust systems, cooling systems and many other bits and pieces that need replacing over that time as well, if not needing the engine/gearbox reconditioned a couple of times if use regularly over all that time (and that can be costly in itself).

In this month's Car and Driver there is a good article about start up Electric car company "Lucid". They are making their first cars available for sale right now.

You can get one with decent range and blistering performance for a scant $175,000. Perfect for me if I could just overcome any range anxiety that may crop up each time that I took the wheel or went on a longer trip.

By the by....... what does it cost per KWH to recharge these days?--should be a lot cheaper than the now average $60-$80 fill up.

New electric car has world’s best driving range.

A little known electric car maker, Lucid, has smashed Tesla in one very important area.

The American electric car brand’s Air Dream is able to drive up to 836km on a single charge, which is the longest claimed driving range of any electric car.

This is about 160km better than the longest range Tesla Model S.

Its impressive range is due to a giant 113kW battery, which is bigger than most on the market.

This is backed up with some serious performance. Two motors combine for 695kW, which is more than most high-powered supercars from Lamborghini and Ferrari.

It can make the sprint to 100km/h from a standstill in less than 2.5 seconds.....
