I can name you another politician who was elected with a strong majority, who was charismatic and much beloved by his followers at the time, but today isn't thought of so highly... popularity and charisma does not necessarily mean that the person is either correct nor doing the right thing, just that they believe themselves to be doing the correct thing, and/or have convinced others of this. In retrospect, evidence may be discovered that neither was true.

No, it's not the obvious example. :^p Much more recent. People who disagreed with George W. Bush's 2003 Iraq invasion were routinely pilloried as traitors or libby loos or wimps or whatever insults were fashionable at the time, and the media was almost completely onboard with it (as Michael Moore demonstrated in Fahrenheit 9/11, for the making of which he was constantly slandered and received death threats... the usual.) As time went by, it became evident what most of the rest of the world was already aware of and found obvious: that no or exceedingly minimal WMDs were present in Iraq, that the regime was secular and antagonistic to, never mind not merely affiliated with, Al Quaeda or other Islamist groups, and as predicted this would energize Islamist terrorism in the region when their opponent was removed... ISIS/ISIL and others ended up being fertilized in the ashes of the war. The opposite premises presented to the American people were that Iraq had thousands of WMDs including nuclear (remember Bush's ridiculous "We don't want the smoking gun to be in the form of a mushroom cloud" ?) that Saddam was allied with Al Quaeda and that his removal would reduce Islamist terrorism and help the Iraqi people. The once so-called fringe left-wing position that these were all incorrect and the invasion was a terrible mistake went so mainstream that Donald Trump, a fellow Republican, even indicated such during his campaign.

Yet at the time, GWB was so charismatic and popular that he was re-elected with a majority even after the war had been running long enough that the fact it was a failure with no factual basis was already known.
