Delta is the UK's dominant variant, but latest official data suggests 6% of Covid cases that have been genetically sequenced are of a new type.

AY.4.2, which some are calling "Delta Plus", contains mutations that might give the virus survival advantages.

A few cases have also been identified in US. There had been some in Denmark but new infections with AY.4.2 have since gone down.

EnGeneIC: Potential new Covid-19 vax for mutant strains to be developed in Australia.

An Australian biotech tech company is the first in the world to develop a potential nanocellular Covid-19 vaccine that’s expected to be more efficient against mutant strains and better suited for patients with compromised immune systems.

The unique drug developed by Sydney-based company EnGeneIC has shown a better immune response and 95 per cent efficacy in its preclinical animal studies.

The technology used for the drug was initially developed as a breakthrough cancer treatment but has been adjusted to work as a vaccine.

Phase 1 clinical trials in healthy humans have begun at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital to test the safety and appropriate dosage. Another trial is due to established in Sydney.

According to the company, the vaccine can be kept at room temperature, has a shelf life of more than three years and doesn’t have any added stabilisers or chemicals.

There is a focus on making the drugs suitable for patients with compromised immune systems — such as people with cancer, auto-immune diseases and other chronic diseases — who may not respond effectively to existing vaccines.

EnGeneIC co-chief Jennifer MacDiarmid said there was no vaccine to date that was directed towards immune-compromised people and they were excluded from other vaccine trials that wanted emergency approval.

Onions tied to salmonella outbreak in 37 U.S. states.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions (CDC) are investigating a salmonella outbreak in 37 states tied to whole, fresh onions.

The FDA said in a statement that it traced the outbreak to ProSource Inc. of Hailey, Idaho as a source of "potentially contaminated whole, fresh onions" that were imported from the state of Chihuahua, Mexico.

The outbreak has been associated with 652 illnesses, 129 hospitalizations and no deaths, the FDA said.

The company is voluntarily recalling its red, yellow and white onions that were imported from July 1- Aug. 27, 2021, the agency said. The onions are jumbo, colossal, medium and sweet onions.

The FDA is advising restaurants, retailers and consumers to not eat, sell or serve onions from ProSource that are affected by the recall or products containing the onions.

Well after seeing the vision of Melbourne's midnight reopening and what is still going on down there this morning with daily cases still running at over 2K I can see that going really bad. :-(

Sydney's reopening a week ago didn't produce anywhere near the same scenes (except for the beach scenes there though I'm sure that Melbourne's beach scenes will be in soon enough), but daily cases have gone from the 200's up into the 300's now.

Meanwhile the U.S. is celebrating the grand opening of their 46M+ case clubhouse as Florida's death numbers take a jump from 58,143 to 58,608 mostly due to those so called "historic" numbers. :-(

And the UK is likewise celebrating a jump in numbers to 40k, or is it 50k, or tomorrow?

Deadly bacteria found in aromatherapy product sold at Walmart.

An aromatherapy room spray sold at Walmart may be linked to four cases of a highly uncommon bacterial infection that's rarely seen in the United States.

The cases, diagnosed this year, were identified in Georgia, Kansas, Minnesota and Texas. Two of the people, including a child, have died.

On Friday, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that Walmart, which sold the product, “Better Homes & Gardens Lavender & Chamomile Essential Oil Infused Aromatherapy Room Spray with Gemstone,” is recalling nearly 4,000 bottles.

That product, discovered in the home in one of the four patients, was found to be contaminated with potentially deadly bacteria called Burkholderia pseudomallei....

....Burkholderia pseudomallei bacteria are usually never found in household products, at least in the U.S.

Such bacteria are most commonly found in contaminated water or soil in southeast Asia or northern Australia. On average, about a dozen cases tend to be diagnosed in the U.S. each year, usually among people who had traveled overseas.

We've know for a while that Russia's Sputnik V is a poor performer (as well as China's efforts), but now there's another twist to it that has lead to it being banned. :-O
