What really happened is when the pandemic hit world wide demand dropped so the major producers cut production and many small ones went out of buiness. Now that demand is up the big producers are ramping up but it is not like a light switch the wells and fracking take time to get going and the ones that went out of business can't come back, that alone created a smaller supply than we had before. Also even though I am old I remember gas last year at $1.89 at the Costco --now it is $3.19. Trump made sure that we produced enough oil and gas to snuff-out imported petroleum (oil) since as an MBA he realized that cheap and abundant energy drove a thriving economy. My chart shows average US gas prices and this: US Retail Gas Price is at a current level of 3.416, up from 3.36 last week and up from 2.257 one year ago.
