So today Joe has signed a 34 page Executive order on cybersecurity and released the 2017 Climate Report delayed by Trump, probably because it wasn't in comic book style and he had trouble reading more than half a page in one session.

Bit more in one day than Trump did in 4 years.

Pumps and Valves. C'mon Man!!!!!

OPEN da Frickin' Valves and START da Frickin' Pumps. Don't tell me a Valve and Pump CANNOT DO THEIR JOB absent Friggin' Computers.

As one who was involved in the early days of the use of computers to control large chemical plant to an great extent I share your sentiments - we spent a lot of time in making sure that there were adequate manual controls available so that essential valves and pumps could be run to keep the plant running and safe (but probably nowhere near as efficiently as the computer was capable of).
Also something that really concerns me is the fact that the hackers were able to (remotely) access the control network. Why the <insert adjective of choice> are these systems using "public" communications networks? Why not have their own PRIVATE network completely isolated from the public networks? <screams in despair> This one shut-down has probably cost far more in terms of lost production than each company concerned having their own fully isolated control & monitoring network.

I suspect they didn't have the expertise or capital to pull fibers from Houston TX to Linden NJ around 1600 miles, never mind the additional 1000 miles of branches off to other cities. They were ahead of a lot of places, at least they had a right of way to do it.

At least one thing, when it was shutdown they didn't blow a pipe open and have a larger incident. And thinking of that how far away from your main product pipeline do you need to site your command and control network fibers so they don't melt in a worst case from the more likely idiot in a backhoe opening your pipeline? Can you armor your fiber so a idiot backhoe can't take it out? All important factors.

Ignorance and perceived cost and the managers are long gone by the time their catastrophic consequences are suffered...

To keep critical IT control and infrastructure 'air gapped' isolated doesn't necessarily need physically isolated specially (expensively) installed lines. A cheap but still effective version is to use point-to-point VPNs. Physical isolation is to be preferred but I've seen unimaginable resistance to that from lazy operators!

The killer problem and the route for total abuse is that 'everyone' now expects to have total unrestricted unmanaged connectivity to view and control everything from their own personal mobile phone. Add into the mix the (heavily Marketed) 'expectation' of continual 'whizz-bang-features updates', and even to use a very public 'Cloud', and so there is now the Marketed perception followed to deliberately not have anything safely air-gapped or isolated...

What could possibly go wrong?...

All very silly but how do you fight against Marketing for the sake of 'good secure sense' and also fight against management ignorance and the old pathetic excuse that "Everyone else does that on their phones!"...

Expect to see lots more 'silliness' until we get some security regulations enforced for keeping infrastructure secured and protected.

That means that the greedy dumb execs must lose all control from their mobile phone or any other external device...

IT very much is what we make it...

If the head office computer isn't air gapped from the internet, it will be taken over and then the bad guys have all the control that office computer is authorized for as that office computer has trusted access to the VPN.
The VPN isn't the weak point, the computers that connect to the VPN are the weak points.

Well, clearly, "invisible hand" here in da US be sayin' manual override cuts into profits, so we yapped about it and then snapped our fingers and send no to the manual over-ride chaps.

The US needs to make correcting this cowardly act top priority. No holds barred.
This was an act of war committed remotely upon US soil.

Demand that Russia find the perps and turn them over to the US immediately, because they know for certain who they are. They should also demand immediate repayment by Russia of the extorted 5 million dollars, they can get it back from the criminals themselves.
If Russia refuses to take immediate action, the US should take action on their own to take care of the criminals..........

Identify them, find them, infiltrate Russia, and take them out. And if that doesn't work, next on the list is Putin.
Identify him, find him, infiltrate Russia, and take him out.

Of course, none of this will likely happen, as Hidin' Biden lacks the balls to take on Russia.

Alas, poor Joe.
He's just irritated because his Depends keep filling up.
And can't understand why the American public won't just leave him alone so he can sleep all day.
He's spending most of today trying to decide whether to wear a mask or not, while telling Americans.........

"If you have been fully vaccinated, you no longer need to wear a mask. Let me repeat, if you are fully vaccinated, you no longer need to wear a mask," Biden said. "I think it’s a great milestone, a great day. It’s been made possible by the extraordinary success we have had in vaccinating so many Americans, so quickly."

Which is a bullsh*t statement, because even if you are fully vaccinated, if you are in close proximity to infected people, you are still able to acquire the covid virus and subsequently spread it to other individuals who are not vaccinated or protecting themselves. So, just because you are vaccinated and may not become ill, that does not preclude you from being a carrier and giving covid to other people.
And yet, Joe is saying hey, hey, throw your masks away. That is a reckless statement coming from our clueless president. This country's recovery from the covid epidemic would be much better served if everybody including those who are vaccinated, continued to wear protective face coverings when in public.
And not only that, but his ridiculous move also now allows those who refuse to be vaccinated to roam around totally at risk to themselves and others and just brush it off by lying and saying 'Oh yeah, I'm vaccinated.' No proof required. Bonehead move by our bonehead president.

And all the while he has been quite silent on anything at all about the hacking attack on this nation's soil, and any proper response or action to apprehend and punish those responsible for it. He is totally ignoring what is by far the most critical issue at hand right now.

Joe probably has the covid virus leaking out of his dirty Depends too.
