It is often said we should study history, so that we don't make the same mistakes again.
So, did anybody study the nearly 150 year period covering what we call the 'North West Frontier'.

I visited the Punjab (specifically, Amritsar) in 1984 - during the tension that led up to the assassination of Indira Gandhi. I was there purely as a tourist, but we were warned not to stay overnight, and not even to attempt to visit the Golden Temple. There were armed Indian Army guards on the day-train from Delhi.

That experience has given me a lasting interest in colonial events such as the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, and in general the events following the Partition of India in 1947. The British Empire doesn't come out of that period covered in glory.
