As for the people, natives of Italy will tell you in the utmost detail why their region is FAR superior to any other. Unless one is talking, or rather being talked to, by a Roman Rome is always at the bottom of the pile.... Safe topics - their olive oil ad wine are undoubtedly the very best in Europe, if not the world, but just don't mention a specific region as getting that wrong and WWIII will breakout in your face.
