3/14/2020 1:41:57 PM | | Processor: 32 AuthenticAMD AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX 24-Core Processor [Family 23 Model 8 Stepping 2]Okay I looked into causes that make a CPU show fewer cores than it actually has. 1. Go to Windows Search, type msconfig and hit Enter. In the window that opens, click the Boot tab, then click Advanced options. If there is a checkmark at "Number of processors", remove it. Click OK and reboot the system. 2. Navigate to your BOINC data directory C:\Programdata\BOINC\ (hidden directory so fill in the path in Windows Explorer and hit Enter). Open cc_config.xml with Notepad (no need to copy it elsewhere first). Scroll through it for a line with <ncpus> and if it exists, make sure it says <ncpus>-1</ncpus>. If it already did, you can close the file. If it asks to save changes, click cancel. Only if you made a change to the line as I said, save changes. 3. Check that things are as they seem. Download and install CPU-Z and run it. In the CPU tab, does it show the correct CPU and all the cores and threads? In the Mainboard tab, does it show the correct motherboard, and what BIOS update does it state? 4. The last thing you can do is check in place if there actually is a 2970WX (24 core, 48 threads) in the socket and not a 2950X (16 cores, 32 threads) for instance. There are ways in Windows to show a whole different CPU than there actually is in the system. This does mean you have to open the system, remove the cooler, remove the thermal paste and redo all that afterwards, so if you didn't build this system yourself, you may want to let someone experienced do this. Now for my bug. You bought a Threadripper CPU, which at a 2970WX is still a high end solution (and at $900-$1,300 certainly not cheap) , on an Asus ROG Strix X399-E Gaming motherboard ($400), with 32GB DDR4 and then you added just a Radeon RX 570 to it (which is essentially a rebranded RX 470). Why not at least an RX 5700 XT or some Nvidia RTX 2xxx Super? |

Yes i built it myself. I have also been in touch with AMD and they too said that i should go to support page and download the latest drivers. I did that and still got 32 cpu's. Oh, and here's another one,. I bought a 2 TB seagate internal HDD and installed it, only to have bios say that there is nothing there. I'm about 30 seconds away from blowing up this friken M/b. I'm very frustrated. I would like to say thank you to all the guy's who helped me. |

I bought a 2 TB seagate internal HDD and installed it, only to have bios say that there is nothing there.I take it that in the BIOS you set the SATA to enabled and to AHCI? Because if you did that, then yes that does sound like a broken motherboard to me. Out of curiosity, when you look at the Q-code LED, does it show a number? You can check it in your motherboard manual, page 1-11 and further. I built a system with a 2700X on a Gigabyte motherboard that I could not possibly get stable. Lots of crashes per day. That got fixed when I went to an Asrock motherboard. Gigabyte did check their motherboard and found it wasn't faulty. But just my trouble with Gigabyte, them and MSI that I cannot work with. My main system with a 3900X also has a problem where once every so many boots, it loses the information from the BIOS and just sits there. So tomorrow I'll first exchange the CMOS battery for a fresh one. As for running out of money, been there. ;-) |

One last option- check the motherboard manufacturer's web site for BIOS updates. See what version you have, then see if any of the more recent releases address the issues you are having. If they do, i would suggest setting No New Tasks and finish off your existing work. If the motherboard supports USB BIOS updating, set up a USB thumb drive to do that. Update the BIOS, make sure the system still boots OK etc. Then i would wipe the drive, make sure the BIOS is set correctly to AHCI etc, and then re-install the OS from scratch. Update it once installed. Get the current motherboard drivers & install them. Update the OS again. Get the current video card drivers from AMD and install them & reboot. Update the OS again (and reboot if there are more updates). Then re-download BOINC & install it. Restart the system (just for luck), and check in the Event Viewer that it shows the right number of Cores & Threads. If it does, re-attach to your projects and you're good to go. If not, as Jord suggested, it looks like you've got a dud motherboard. Grant Darwin NT |

I didn't offer that because it was one of the first things I looked at. The Asus ROG STRIX X399-E Gaming is the first PCB and comes default with BIOS 1203, there are no updates, not even betas. |

Ok very dumb question and late to the party...the 3 gig ram limit is a very telling issue with windows are you sure you installed windows 10 64-bit. Also a couple of other issues might be at play here run memtest86+ and see how much ram it shows you have and let the tests finish, should show it all if not does your motherboard show it all and support it all. Then if your sure you have windows 10 64bit and memtest86 showed no issues download a linux live cd and burn it and run it I suggest debian and open terminal (bottom left next to desktop) copy whats inside of quotes "fdisk -l && dmidecode -t 0 -t 3 -t 4 -t 32 -t MEMORY && lspci" and paste into terminal (edit->paste) and hit enter and post results here (edit->select all->edit->copy). Myself or others can then help you debug down to the board or down to the OS with this information. |

Commendable that you try to help and all, but the 3 gig RAM limit you bite yourself into is of his AMD videocard, not his main RAM. That is neatly recognized as 16GB, and his Windows as 10 x64: https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=8881812 |

Three computers on that account: 1. https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=8881812 8x core 16x cpu 16 gig of ram 2. https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=8908881 24x core 48x cpu 16 gig of ram 3. https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=8924476 24x core 32x cpu 16 gig of ram same as #2 Computer 1 and 2 seem ok they do need a catalyst update and need to have virtualization enabled, check after you enable on both...now onto computer 3 which is the problem computer. Computer 3 needs a os update which might be the entire problem although not seeing the full 32gig of ram is troubling. First off try disabling virtualization in the bios and see if that fixes the issues, if so start the move over to linux. The reason I asked to see the dmidecode of the system is due to the possibility that the bios (even thought it might be up to date and report fixes in release notes they might not work correctly) might be part of the problem, every time you update your bios completely remove catalyst, not just a uninstall, and restart then reinstall catalyst and restart again. If you update your chipset driver completely uninstall catalyst and restart, update chipset driver, restart, then install catalyst. Microsoft uses a stripped down and highly customized version of busybox (linux) which windows runs on top of since windows vista. For example I have a system that randomly fails to boot (and randomly crashes or has drive issues or has other random issues including reading odd ram sizes) with more than 16 gigs I had 4 slots I packed them with 8g 8g 4g 4g sticks (24gig) and it goes nuts I pack it with 8g 8g or 8g 4g 4g and it runs flawlessly even with different speed ram modules with different timings. A dmidecode would indicate this situation would also indicate if the chipset was doing something wonky. Also if there are issues with the bios (frequent) the issues will arise with linux as windows ignores the issues and continues to boot the best way it can and some manu's will release drivers or software to help windows bypass known issues (ASUS is known for this). |

I have now only 2 computers doing Boinc work., Computer 1 - AMD Ryzen 7 2700, 8 core 16 threads cpu, 16GB of ram and 4 GB VRAM, this system is working fine. Computer 2 - is an AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970wx cpu, 24 core 48 threads with 32GB of ram and 8GB VRAM. It is now working fine with Boinc work. And yet I still have an issue with the Seagate Barracuda 2 TB HDD. All sata ports are enabled but Bios still can't see it. I would like to thank everyone who pitched in. THANK YOU. Jake. |

Also try another SATA data lead. EDIT- and what was the fix with the CPU cores not all being recognised? Grant Darwin NT |

Seeing how he got a new hostID and he's running Windows 10 x64 Pro, I suspect he's replaced his motherboard. |

Hello Grant: I did what you suggested a few posts ago. I deleted everything and re-installed win10. I then updated all the drivers and then installed Boinc again. And voila, i now have 48 threads. All is running fine. The only other outstanding issue is that bios still does not see any sata devices that are connected. I have several sata drives that i use as backup, and both of them were working fine until i installed them into the new m/b's. I have 3 HDD's and none of them work. Frustrating. Thanks again for your help. Jake. |

Computer 2 only shows 16gb of ram or is the 16gb of ram a boinc ram limit. The hard drives issue is next to tackle, if the ram is a boinc ram limit, are the drives in question hooked to a pci(e) card or straight to the mobo. If the mobo make sure ahci is enabled, if a separate controller card make sure it's supported by windows. Just my 2 cents, I've had a lot of good luck with the Lsi Logic SAS-9211 card and splitter cables however you have to flash the card bios for IT mode for ahci I'm getting 6 gb/s/disk cached reads at the same time. EDIT: One of the three works tells me something else is going on...possible bad controller card / port / cable maybe a bios bug. My Asus M55-E will only run one drive at sata 3 and ignores the rest of the ports (bios limitation) in windows and linux sees all of the drives and runs them all at sata2 hence the lsi card. |

No, they are not spinning or making any kind of noise. Tried different cables, different sata slots, and also on my other m/b, ASUS AM4 TUF GAMING X570-Plus ATX Motherboard , NOTHING. These 2 boards don't see anything Sata. I have 2 = Corsair Force MP600 M.2 2280 1TB PCI-Express Gen 4.0 x4 NVMe 3D TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) in each computer. The boards like the NVMe's ,but not sata. In Device manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI shows three lines "Standard SATA/ AHCI Controller." and under disk drives only the NVMe Force MP600. Thanks Grant. The boards like the NVMe's ,but not sata. In Device manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI shows three lines "Standard SATA/ AHCI Controller." and under disk drives only the NVMe Force MP600.And no yellow ! next to it? Right clicking on "Standard SATA AHCI controller" and then on Properties gives "The device is working properly" in the General tab? *scratches head* Weird. The OS recognises the controller, but it's not working. Have you tried a different SATA port on the motherboard? On my motherboard, when using an M.2 drive it means one of the SATA ports is no long usable. The only other thing that comes to mind would be to try a different power supply (or at least a different SATA power connector). If the controller on the motherboard is OK (which it appears to be) the only things left are the drive, the data lead, or the power to the drive- or the port on the motherboard being used has an issue. Maybe try them all? A dodgy port OK, but no way all of them would be dead if the controller itself is OK. Grant Darwin NT |

Ok clear your cmos and set the clock. After clearing the cmos you should see the sata drives connected (center of screen). If the drives are connected make sure they say ahci and not raid. Then make sure your ram modules are all listed if one is not listed I suspect half aren't listed save bios and power down and reseat them all and check the bios again. If the drives still aren't listed remove all of the drives including ssd's and boot to bios then shutdown plug in just your sata disks and see if they show up in bios if not you have a possible northbridge problem if they are listed shutdown and put the ssd's back in and boot to bios again and make sure the drives are still seen if not the bios may have a bug that disables sata drives when ssd's are connected. If thats the case you sol until fixed...try linux as the kernel has many bios and cpu workarounds for issues like these and you never have to restart for updates. My server/gateway is an old a4-4000 running 16gig of ram and debian buster for 120 days straight. ASUS A55M-E that i got cheap 8 years ago 26 TB worth of storage. I have an old asus board M5A78L-M that was doa turns out it was playing dead I had to strip everything off of the board even the cpu, pull the bios and flash it in my spi flasher and put it back, and post the bare board to get it to come back. ASUS boards can sometimes be finiky, it has since died. |
