I'm a little bit gutted about this - but fully understanding of your reasons.

I hope i can chew up forther data for you in the future and have been very happy to have been a part of this pretty much since you started up.

There's plenty of spare computer power now, so it will be here as and when you return.

Please keep us posted with your literature publications and the plans for the future.

Cheers

Dave, Australia.

Message 2038951 - Posted: 19 Mar 2020, 16:49:31 UTC - in response to Message 2036371.

In this World of Billionaires, Millionaires, and others extremely Well Off(Ones Professing How Science Science Science is dA BE ALL and END ALL and Will Enthusiascally CONtribute) - and they CANNOT be convinced to Pony Up a Bunch of Dough for a Project, Hailed Ad Nauseam as a World History Changer, then there MUST NOT BE a CONvincing Argument to do so.

20+ Years to CONvince. And What? It has NEVER ADDED UP.

I Believe it ALL was a way to Create Part-Time Work for a few UCB Profs. It is always nice to have a very Well Paying Part-time Job.

World is FLUSH with CASH to Donate and Is Donated. But Here is a Project Constantly Portrayed as Humanities Greatest Discovery - once Discovered - and NOTHING.

Time to Sleep says S&H. 'cept Unlike a Bear. NOT WELL FED and HAPPY. Or are they?

Yep

Wow!

erm, well, if you'd like to take a look back at the history of scientific investigation, experiment and evidence, you will find that there were far, FAR more studies which didn't necessarily meet their "ideal outcome". But that doesn't mean they were a waste of time. Negative results can be a positive for science: perhaps we're looking in the wrong places - as in maybe looking for radio signals is not a fruitful process. There will doubless be other ways to identify intelligent signals from outer space - perhaps we just collectively showed that this method is no ideal?

Just because you set up SETI on your PC, left it running for decades like the rest of us, and YOU didn't prove Alien life exists, does not make SETI a failure in any way shape or form. Sadly, you're just part of the modern day scourge of wanting everything on your plate - RIGHT. ****ING. NOW. OR. ELSE.

Well science doesn't work like that. It's an iterative process.

The fact you allude to this being a "CON" is really quite pathetic.

History is literered with experimental data that doesn't necessarily make a proof, but moreover, it points us in a different direction. That's how we live and learn. You should try that sometime.
In the meantime, if you want FAST results, maybe try computing some of the projects that have expected end points on BOINC or on the community grid and stop bitching at SETI - which IMO was an excellent initiative and worthy of my computer time. Unless of course it cost you more, then I suggest reflecting on the above, calm down, and understand that science doesn't just hand out answers simply because we ask a question.

Ok. Something here isn't making a lot of sense from my understanding how this project works. If only a small percentage of the sky has been analyzed, how is it possible at this point to get diminishing returns? What does that even mean? And why does "analyzing the back end" of the results require the shutting down of incoming data? I didn't know one was dependent on the other. Can't analyzing the back end and incoming data occur simultaneously? I have my own speculation of what is happening but it's just my own theory which I will keep to myself.

Is it the kind of theory that would involve using a large trout?

Well, maybe something could be set up to handle analysing the data? I mean - you have all of these Spocks out here wanting to do something.....

Also - you should set up so the SETI@Home program plays the ET music. Just once, all over the globe, we can all hope we meet some
other race.... :-)

Dear Seti@Home
You are aware if we uninstall Seti, that is it! all of our PetaFlops will fly away and you may never get them back again.
IF you find a pattern (or error) while writing your papers, we wont be back this way for a long time.
Your greatest assets outside of your skillset, is not your data, it is your enviable hoard of Fans who bought high powered PUs to improve there SETI throughput rather than bitcoin mining, who stuck with you guys while everyone jumped on the distributed computing bandwidth, who freed your funding to get time on the best radio telescopes.
You should be lending us to an associated project, adding project chunks to your engine and using our clout to get some funding kick back, some projects may be desperate for the boost our Seti Army can provide.
Without us, the broom cupboard you have been shoved in, all these years, would have been so so much smaller. University be like 'Searching for Aliens? - get outta here'
Without us, your next generation of researchers may never get this computing grunt ever again, just when the Very Large Array projects all over the world are getting off the ground.
Dont set us adrift now.

Regards

It's hard to believe it's been going so many years.

I joined SETI@home April 3 1999.
I believe it officially started May.

I may have not processed much data, living in rural area, but pleased to offer the time.

I will be looking forward to helping out again.

SETI@home it's out there.

I'm a relative newcomer. Came here after seeing Dave Jones talk about it on his EEVBlog youtube channel. Sad to see it go, but it was fun and interesting while it lasted. Good luck to everyone going forward.

If anybody wants to pick up my 1060 and 980 GPUs that I no longer have any use for, let me know! Otherwise they will make their way onto the trash heap that is Ebay. Much rather see them put to good use.

Someone was looking for a 980. Try the orphan thread or don't know where to post it thread.

This is really sad news. This project has been with me for nearly 20 years. But it's still a good memory.Which project will my friends go to?

Interesting point, private_citizen. I suggest we monitor (or at least Google) SETI@home once in a while to see if we are needed again, someday.

In the meantime, I appreciate their honesty: if we’re not adding value anymore, let’s save some electricity. It might only cost £0.13 per kilowatt hour, but it’s also causing the emission of a little over 250g of CO2 per kilowatt hour (DEFRA figure for UK grid electricity) and that’s bad news.

If evidence of ET isn’t going to be found by additional crunching in this way, at this time, let’s stand down.

I joined back in 1999 and have enjoyed being a very small part in a potentially life changing project.

Wishing you all well. M5 signing off

Been almost 18 years since I joined this project, at least if the date on my profile is right... I remember a time before BOINC. I guess you could say it's grown up :)

Thanks for all the effort you put into this project!

I have seen it written in several places that new work units will no longer be available after 31 March 2020, but what about the unfinished work units that are still on our computers after that date? Will they still be collected?

Thanks

Message 2039209 - Posted: 20 Mar 2020, 18:04:31 UTC - in response to Message 2035163.

The impression given back in 1999 was we were going to scan the heavens for radio signals that potentially could be from intelligent life.
It was presented as something that would be ongoing and continue until something was found.
This is mainly why I donated my computer time to this project

Never was any time limit stated, nor were their diminishing returns.
Many times funding was needed and many times a lack of it putting the project in Jeopardy.
You just ran a fund raiser for the fall/winter.

So what were we raising money for?

It seems to me this is more like we have been doing this for 20 years, no closer to finding ET than when we started.
Lets shut down, write a paper, and move on.
