I switched to Milkyway from SETI just after the WOWevent. I have a pair of fully loaded mining rigs and only one 220v outlet in the garage. Even if I had another 220 outlet I would not run both at same time. I also run WCG on them.

All my other non-mining systems run WCG as they are multicore and multiprocessor xeons. Far less wattage than the Amd and NVidia boards of the miners.

I will switch back to SETI for the WOWevent. Fair warning: I have completed a script that can install "X" number of boinc clients and a "mod" to the linux client to not report results until after the WOWevent starts. Good luck finding work units in the month or two before the contest.

We need to send back the anti-missile system to the drawing board to handle that quantity of nukes!

At least we have 10 months to be ready. LOL

I have made it back into the top 40 https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/top_hosts.php?sort_by=expavg_credit&offset=20 and have hopes to crack the 300,000 RAC again that MIGHT put me back into the top 20.

The latest top-end cruncher I am running continues to appear to be quite reliable and to be drawing a lot less power (fewer/lower powered gpus, newer cpu design w/fewer threads).

I am examining gpu/cpu upgrades that might reduce or nearly breakeven my power draw while giving me more gpu/cpu crunching performance.

Have implemented a decoy handler for any missiles. If a work unit arrives and it expires before the contest starts, it gets processed and returned immediately. This keeps more of the good stuff coming and project control has no clue as to what is about to happen.

You know you make my "teeth chatter" with this kind of visual humor ;)

And I have stumbled back into 28th place.... now if the amount of electricity I am using to get there continues its lower end path maybe I can afford to stay there.

But there is one reason you have already named, sometimes the power bill becomes too much to persevere with.

If you can afford the power for the computers themselves, a passive cooling area would be much cheaper, ie a dedicated room with two windows, one with a small fan blowing cool air in (optional) and one with a small fan blowing hot air out . Or just put them outdoors in a shed or enclosure.

The merciless laws of thermodynamics dictate that every joule of heat you put into the house will require roughly two joules of AC to get rid of it. So it will end up costing 3x in power what it would just running the computers alone.

Darn, the room my fastest processing box lives in has 1 window. And the house thermostat is in the hallway right outside that door. I don't have a basement..... Maybe a fan in the window and keep the door closed will help next summer?

Which will do nothing since there is no air transfer in a closed box. You have to have air movement to transfer heat. You would have to keep the door open to the room to get air to move from the air inside the house to the outside with the fan assisting.

That is what I do in reverse. I open the windows in the rooms with computers and have fans pulling in outside air from the window and exhausting the heat into the rest of the house. Only benefit is heating the house in the winter. In the summer, the windows are closed and the fans still running at the room entries to exhaust heat into the hallway for the thermostat to sense. Only way to keep the rooms livable. Could do things much differently with a ductless mini-split system for each room with its own thermostat.

You need to be able to get "cool" air into the room as well as get hot air out. One way that might work is to put a large fan in the upper part of the window while having a fairly simple duct to draw "cooler" air from outside the building, and arranged within the room to prevent the "cooler" air from cutting the corner and leaving the room before it's done its job of cooling the computers. If possible have the exhaust air blowing upwards, while drawing cold air up from below the window.

Or keep the door closed & put a large (and therefore slower & quieter) exhaust fan in the ceiling to blow in to the roof cavity if you have one, mounted as far from the window as possible as it will be the source of the cooler replacement air. Or if the air in the house is cooler than outside- keep the window closed with the exhaust fan as far from the door as possible.
A small pedestal fan may help by mixing the warmer & cooler air, if there is a large difference in temperatures in different parts of the room- usually only an issue in very large rooms (or very long rooms when the heat source is located at one end of the room and the exhaust fan isn't above the heat source, or the heat source isn't between the exhaust fan and the fresh air source).
