Then find the download button.

The seti app will not run without boinc running. Boinc provides the communications and management required on each computer. You can have many computers on a single account.

There is at BOINC no option to just download the GUI BOINC Manager, you will have to download the complete installer and install that. Although nothing dictates that you have to run the client specifically, it will start up the first time you start BOINC Manager (until you uncheck "Run the client?" in Options.)

If you want to go that route, go to https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php and download the installer without VirtualBox.
You can tell in the installer you don't want BOINC to start with Windows start up.

But an easier option here is not to use BOINC Manager, but instead a third party app such as EFMer's BOINCTasks (which is an official BOINC add-on)

Best go shower with last night's coffee, Rob, as that's not what he was asking or saying. All he wants is a GUI from a Windows computer to control BOINC on his Linux computer. :-)

I have already joined seti@home otherwise I wouldn't be able to post here, and also I have installed, configured and it's running tasks, of boinc-client on my headless Ubuntu server, what I wanted was to install just the boinc manager on my windows workstation to control boinc-client on my Linux server, I do NOT want to install boinc on my workstation I only want to install only the manager for remote control of the boinc client on my linux server..
You have multiple options, but none of them are clean or simple: none of them have a clean, "Manager only", installation route.

Your choices include:

    * Download the Manager directly from the source repo: currently, I'd recommend https://ci.appveyor.com/project/BOINC/boinc/builds/26666104/artifacts
    * Download the combined BOINC installer from https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php, and run it with the /a admin installation switch to extract files only
    * Install the combined BOINC package, then disable the client part
    * Install an alternative third-party Manager like BoincTasks

The problem with the first two is that Windows programs aren't simple self-contained binaries: they rely on a complicated set of 'DLLs', or 'Dynamic Link Libraries'. It's normally the job of an installer to supply and deploy these DLLs to the right place. With the first option, you'd have to find and deploy the right DLLs yourself. With the second option, the DLLs will be included in the admin image, but you still need to deploy them manually. A tool like Dependency Walker will help you with either option.

The third option would put the right files in the right places, and even create launch icons. But you still have the clean-up to do.

It all depends on your knowledge of Windows installation and deployment issues. If you want a quick and easy life, go for option four.

BOINC Manager->Options->Other options->uncheck "Run the client?"->OK
BOINC Manager->File->Exit->check "Stop running tasks when exiting the manager?"->OK
Next time you start BOINC Manager it start just BOINC Manager.

When you installed BOINC, it may have asked you to add a project, but you did not have to do that. You could just've canceled that, then gone the tour above. Or as said by Richard and me, install the third party BOINCTasks, as this runs without the client.

You can delete the computer entry once all tasks in its queue have been deleted. Best course of action for now is to start BOINC Manager with the client, View, Advanced view, Projects tab, select Seti, click No new tasks. Next click the Tasks tab, select all tasks, Abort, acknowledge.
Wait for that to be reported back to the server. Then it will be quicker to get rid of the work as it shows in the details of your computer and when all task mentions there have been deleted on server (done by the server), you can delete that computer entry.

If you forego the abort method, you will have to wait for all this work to time out, be resent to other computers, for them to return that etc. This route can take several months.

Aborting and reporting the unwanted tasks will also be greatly appreciated by your 'wingmates' - your partners in crunching, who are also waiting for your report before their own tasks can be validated.

Testing BBCode 'list' format fix:

Your choices include:

  1. Download the Manager directly from the source repo: currently, I'd recommend https://ci.appveyor.com/project/BOINC/boinc/builds/26666104/artifacts
  2. Download the combined BOINC installer from https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php, and run it with the /a admin installation switch to extract files only
  3. Install the combined BOINC package, then disable the client part
  4. Install an alternative third-party Manager like BoincTasks

Yay!
