FDA warns about hydroxychloroquine dangers, cites serious effects, including death

The Food and Drug Administration warned Friday that people should not take chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine to treat covid-19 outside of a hospital or formal clinical trial, citing reports of “serious heart rhythm problems.”

Many of those adverse effects occurred in patients with the virus who were treated with the anti-malaria drugs, often in combination with azithromycin, also known as Z-Pak. President Trump has described such drugs as a potential “game-changer,” although results from clinical trials are not yet in to show whether they are effective.

“We will continue to investigate risks associated with the use of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine for COVID-19 and communicate publicly when we have more information,” the FDA wrote.

The adverse events reported include abnormal heart rhythms such as QT interval prolongation, dangerously rapid heart rate called ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation, and in some cases, death, the agency said. The FDA did not say how many deaths have been reported.

Patients who also have other health issues such as heart and kidney disease are likely to be at increased risk of these heart problems when receiving these medicines.

The malaria drugs are not approved for use in covid-19 patients, but the FDA is allowing hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine products donated to the Strategic National Stockpile to be distributed and used in limited circumstances, such as for certain hospitalized patients with covid-19, the agency noted.

FDA covering their donkeys as all good physicians do. Notably the line regarding number of deaths, out of how large a group, and whether these were due to the disease or the drug.

These same effects occur in the patients taking the drugs for Lupus and Malaria. And this is why it should only be obtained and used under the care and advice of a physician. It is not a prophylactic and should only be used for the severely ill Covid-19 victims.

Additionally the intravenous application of chunky style peanut butter is also not recommended by the FDA as a Covid-19 therapy.....

Well I thought that Ecuador's +11,536 new cases (now into 18th spot) would put a spike in the U.S. recording better than a third of the world's new cases (+104,812) today, but the U.S. didn't fail to disappoint us recording +37,960 and is now currently within 9000 cases of having a third of the world's total reported cases. :-O

Further down the list the U.K. looks like it'll take Germany's 5th spot from them sometime next week and Russia will take China's 9th spot from them in 3-4 days.

Belgium and Canada look to be about to tussle over 12th spot.

Another mover is Saudi Arabia which jumped both Israel and Austria (not Australia) into 22nd spot while Mexico is closing in on both Pakistan (28th) and Singapore (27th), but Pakistan is a potential sleeper still with extremely low testing numbers.

Meanwhile South Korea is now down to 31st spot with Romania closing in and Australia (not Austria) is down to 43rd.

Coronavirus news from the US Military.
Navy Leaders Recommend Reinstating Roosevelt Captain Fired Over Virus Warning
WASHINGTON — Capt. Brett E. Crozier should be restored to command of the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt, the Navy’s top officials recommended on Friday.

But Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper, who was briefed on the recommendations, has asked for more time to consider whether to sign off on reinstating the captain of the nuclear-powered carrier.

I assume that means that Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper isn't allowed to make decisions without consulting higher authority.
And on Friday, Pentagon officials said a crew member aboard the Kidd, a destroyer deployed to the Caribbean, had tested positive for the virus, marking the second time a deployed Navy ship had been stricken with the illness. In a subsequent statement, the Navy said that at least 17 other sailors had also tested positive.

Trump Speech to Bring 1,000 West Point Cadets Back to Campus
WASHINGTON — For President Trump, who adores the pomp and precision of military ceremonies, this was the year he would finally get one of the special perks of being president — delivering the commencement address at West Point, the only service academy where he has not spoken.

But the graduation was postponed because of the coronavirus, the cadets were sent home and officials at the school were not sure when it would be held or even whether it was a good idea to hold it.

That was news to everyone, including officials at West Point, according to three people involved with or briefed on the event. The academy had been looking at the option of a delayed presidential commencement in June, but had yet to complete any plans. With Mr. Trump’s pre-emptive statement, they are now summoning 1,000 cadets scattered across the country to return to campus in New York, the state that is the center of the outbreak.

And San Marino still leading in the CPM (Cases per million) jersey for this year of Tour de World by 15,119 points. Followed by the Vatican City 11,236 and Andorra 9,461 points. The black sheep Sweden is way behind with only 1,739 points and even behind the US with Trump as a team manager with 2,797 points.

Is there a link to any figures on that as well as drinking or injecting Dettol or bleach Betreger?

Those sort of figures could possibly pad those numbers all the way out to half. :-O

Hey! We can laugh with deadly morbid humour (or be dismayed in disbelief) but there are some people so blind and desperate and hyped and scared silly that they might try anything suggested.

Best and safest is not to make or suggest any Trump medical silliness. It really could kill people.

Note the hurried announcements published about not using cleaning fluid or disinfectant for anything other than cleaning your home. Such things are very much not to be used on people. They kill people. Don't try anything'medical'. People have already died.

Stay safe!

Has Sweden got it right?
Who knows? Especially with the ongoing disinformation from foreign media portraying Sweden as behaving wreck less and everything is Business As Usually. That's simply not true! What we do know is that a lockdown is not the way to go. Facts are already proving that it doesn't work. Sweden is about in the same mess as other countries.
But that doesn't say that Sweden got it right. It works here because social distancing is a Swedish way per default. Everyone knows this but for some reason many countries are now suddenly blaming us for not keeping social distancing.
Some even goes so far that Sweden is doing an experiment!
F**ing ridiculous.

Yeah, we Swedes are anti-social by default. Nobody need to tell us to keep the distance, we have done that for thousands of years already.
If anyone I don't know personally comes closer to me than 2 metres, I'll tell her/him to go to a place of fire and brimstone :-)
Actually Finns and Estonians are the same:)
Oh btw. To foreigners. Don't try the Swedish model at home.

One thing I've particularly noticed in the media is that the present pandemic seems to have greatly increased some of the political rhetoric and stirred passions... Especially so for the style of language used...

There is also increased military confrontation from Russia and Iran. Those two countries are very dependant on oil revenues for their corruptocracies to survive. And with the world slowdown, oil prices have collapsed...

There's also increased (opportunistic?) bullying from China...

Is the pandemic also making some of the world politics even more ill?

Of course it will. Many politicians are are already using it in their rhetoric. Like "Every corona virus comes from China, so every Chinese is a vector".
There are of course many more of the like...

Tell me about the bad effects of a human consuming cleaning fluids......

Several of us were involved in cleaning up the mess after someone comitted suicide by drinking a fairly small quantity of bleach dilute with black current juice in lemonade. I'll spare folks the details, but suffice to say there are some really nasty memories triggered by certain combinations of smells :-(

I guess everybody have read about the couple that tried the corona virus antidote used for cleaning fish tanks that the Genius Trump promoted in his rallies. Well he died and his wife almost as well. Certainly a game changer.
And now the Genius Trump is promoting other and even lethal "antidotes" ...
Are there people that will follow the now self appointed Surgeon General's advice?

I wouldn't say that are so many "schadenfreude" posters in this forum.
However some post of ignorance maybe. And I admit some of mine:)
Now for nicotine. There are some studies that it could help stopping the COVID-19.
Well It mean that if you doesn't smoke it of course :)

I did say some schadenfreude.
The Nicotine studies, if they hold up,
are no reason to start smoking, but may
indicate that now is not the best time to quit,
though a Nicotine replacement aid may help.

Is it the nicotine or years of lungs having to speed up self regeneration from pollution?

Maybe it's the coating of tobacco tar in the lungs that's killing the virus...

Bit of a Hobson's non-choice for how the victim might wish to die...

Very good point though that we don't know which of whatever mechanisms might be involved.

Still very interesting (in ways that Trump will not comprehend...)
