As with the truly unknown number infected with the Swine Flu back in 2009:

That's not true, analysis went on long after the epidemic and they have a pretty good idea of the numbers. In two or three years from now they will have a better estimate of those infected and those who died because of it. There is even talk in Italy of exhuming bodies of those that died earlier because there was an unexplained increase in deaths from flu and pneumonia, in a few towns.
And instead of going to the Wiki, sometimes it is better to google and choose the link from the source, in this case the CDC, https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/2009-h1n1-pandemic.html there you will see they are still studying Swine Flu.

The Imperial College Study That’s Formed the Basis of So Much Panic Just Got Revised Down Significantly

Posted at 1:15 pm on March 26, 2020 by Bonchie

This is big news, as the Imperial College Study has formed the basis for nearly all the panic in the Western world over the Wuhan virus.

Today, the leading researcher on that study has revised his numbers to show dramatic drops in his estimates of deaths and the number of ICU beds needed to tackle the crisis. This comes after he had previously shown up to 2 million dead in the United States and 500,000 dead in the United Kingdom.

All I see from that report is many "experts" agreeing that 2+2=5.
When they all agree that the answer is 4, then I'll listen.

I just wonder how many of these experts are influenced by those who pay their wages.

And then their answers are interpreted by politicians.

Eeeee by 'eck and ecky thump!!!

Those comments read like the knee jerk reactions of the Sunday trash 'newspapers'.

Note the main paragraph from that article:

He said that expected increases in National Health Service capacity and ongoing restrictions to people’s movements make him “reasonably confident” the health service can cope when the predicted peak of the epidemic arrives in two or three weeks. UK deaths from the disease are now unlikely to exceed 20,000, he said, and could be much lower.

Hence, very good that we had the original worse case predictions of what could happen, very good the politicians and the populace have heeded the advice to take positive action, and very good too that we are already seeeing an improved outcome.

That arithmetic may well have saved your lives.

What a load of old tosh.
It was precisely because of the warning in Professor Ferguson's numbers that Trump and Boris started taking some action and encourage people to work from home and not go to any large meeting places.
My suggestion for Fox News host Laura Ingraham is to keep her big mouth shut until she can prove she understands the subject she wants to spout off about.

I try to watch her show most every evening and I can usually stomach about 1/2 hr before I change the channel. I fell it is good to hear what alternate realities generate. Her viewpoint is quite often weird.

Glad we don't get Fox News on our TV screens, although you can watch on-line if you are so inclined. They were effectively shut down over here. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-41887613

A reasonable short explanation of Ferguson's projections
But in fact, Ferguson had not revised his projections in his testimony, which he made clear in interviews and Twitter. His earlier study had made clear the estimate of 500,000 deaths in Britain and 2.2 million in the United States projected what could happen if both took absolutely no action against the coronavirus. The new estimate of 20,000 deaths in Britain was a projected result now that Britain had implemented strict restrictions, which this week came to include a full lockdown.

I don't - can't - won't - watch Fox news, so I can't comment of what sort of American spin has been put on it - but www.newscientist.com is a reputable science news outlet. I have a subscription, so I've had a peek through the paywall. But my paper copy has been delayed (should have arrived in the mail this morning, but didn't). I'll have a proper read when it arrives, and perhaps grab a summary from behind the paywall so you can judge for yourselves.

Well, I disagree on some of the terminology being used in this crisis.
The major one being "Full lockdown".
Really?
With the Underground still running?
So much for the "safe distancing" of 2 metres.
So much for the banning of more than 2 people gathering.
I could go on, but as not only seen on these boards, but in actuality, it would be a waste of time.

I see Trump is flip-flopping again.

On the ventilator problem he told Sean Hannity, the Fox News host, last night, that states were inflating their needs.

This morning He is blasting off shouting tweets to GM "START MAKING VENTILATORS, NOW!!!!!!” and Ford “FORD, GET GOING ON ventilators, FAST!!!!!!”

"Full lockdown" ...as in having the doors to your apartment building being welded shut by the Army...

See Wuhan Hubei China...

Very informative. But I doubt that so many will understand it anyway. You do need some basic understanding in math and handling statistics.

The US is a bit late, don't you think,
BBC 11:49
Demand for German ventilators outstrips supplies

Damien McGuinness

BBC News, Berlin

A manufacturing firm in northern Germany is now having to make life and death decisions. Governments from all over the globe are ordering ventilators, says Stefan Dräger, the head of the world’s biggest producer of respirators that can keep intensive care patients alive.

His company has doubled production and hopes to double again this year. But demand is 10 times what his firm can produce. And he has to decide who gets the life-saving machines.

The US alone has ordered 100,000 ventilators - which is the total number manufactured every year globally. And the German government has placed an order for 10,000 additional machines for German hospitals.

But components come from all over the world and Mr Dräger warns that export bans could limit supplies and hamper production.

Which blows the "Globalism is GOOD, we are all 'brothers and sisters'" 'cume by ya' BS out of the water.

How long will it be before that 'Great Speckled Bird' (the UN, which as usual sit on their overstuffed apathy) starts condemning the United States for taking care of it's own with ventilators produced, IN DETROIT, by GM (under order of The President, who understood 3 1/2 years ago, the NEED to be self-sufficient and home made during a world crisis)?

Yes, we were late to the party, due to foot dragging and reallocation of funds by 'those in power' to Social programs instead of restocking the National and Local reserve supply of medical equipment and supplies depleted after the H1N1 outbreak in 2009.

Even if the motor manufacturers take the quick option and assemble under license, GM with Ventec, the time to set up the assembly line, testing that they meet the specs and approval time, it will probably be three months before the hospital see the motor manufacturers ventilators.
And unfortunately they will probably be required in the next two weeks.

There is also as question out there, about battery supplies for the ventilators as well. Each ventilator needs a least two hot swapable batteries that can each power the ventilator for 20 minutes minimum.
