Yes, it’s great that we can participate in something grandiose. But I want to know what improvements the project will have next? Will everything be limited to screensavers or will there be more advanced versions for FFT calculations and signal analysis? Will the project participants be able to view the results of their work?

I'm curious as to why my team has a start day of March 1, 1999 if SETI started up in August 1999

Well if you look at the date of the first post in this thread it was in fact "released" to the general public on the 17th of May.

However there was a "testing" phase that people could sign up for that started earlier.

Message 2006921 - Posted: 12 Aug 2019, 6:48:12 UTC - in response to Message 1994634.

Like Raistmer, and a fair number of others, I started way back in 1999 (September or October), then moved around a bit before settling down with the account that got caught-up in the move to "BOINC-based" SETI.
+1. Somehow I created a Boinc account back when it started but didn't start crunching again until a few years ago. Regardless of those lost years, the crunching that I had completed back then will never be lost. Here's to many more years for all of us!
The same here, but in my case my first account had 7 completed w/u's that took 9.5 days each to complete so it was no great loss losing that account. This current account started with a rig that could do those w/u's in well less than half the time of the original rig.

Cheers.

Glad to be a part of this most optimistic endeavor.

I don't recall the exact date that I joined S@H, but it was shortly after it began. I had a hopeless Packard-Bell computer that took 10 days to complete one W.U. Next I got a slightly faster HP that took a week per W.U. Then I changed providers and email addresses and lost that account. Can't recover the credit because I don't remember the usernames and passwords.

I am now on my fifth computer, having crunched BOINC projects 24/7/365 for 20 years. And happy to do it.

Congratulations to SETI@Home and to all faithful crunchers out there.

Aren't these previous accounts yours, Steven ? If so, all is not lost ^^

Yes, they were my accounts, but I can't seem to access them because I don't remember the user names and passwords. I think there were three accounts, over 18 through 5 years ago.

But it was only a couple hundred thousand credits all together. And the research was done anyway, so no great loss.

Anyway, thanks for the reply.

No great loss? What if down the pipeline we find --or an AI finds-- a technosignal in classic data and you were the one that crunched it :o ? Silly me, I forgot to indicate the link to all your "enhanced" accounts (provided you kept the same name for them all), but none of them indicates more than 30k classic work units.

I understand that you already tried without success to merge your classic accounts to your enhanced account... but to finish this message with a note of hope, perhaps a manual search using your specific or approximate registration date is possible ? http://seticlassic.ssl.berkeley.edu/classpages/index.html (I hope you have a good memory or you used and kept your old agendas, otherwise good luck :/ :)

Wow, has it been that long. I was just looking at my team page and saw the create date of March 1, 1999. I had a long respite from SETI computing due to lack of CPU power, but happily I'm back to it.

*sigh* Wish I had taken the time to merge my other, older accounts to my newer ones along the years while I still controlled 'em... Congrats, np2ij ^^

Me too.

I lost several accounts on previous computers, emails and service providers as far back as 1999. Couldn't remember the addresses, passwords, etc and
never recovered them. I did manage to save one previous account and some credits, but lost a lot more.

So Happy Birthday, SETI.

Cheers SETI@Home! I've been here since 1999 and can't believe it's 20 years!

I remember the excitement when I replaced the flying toasters on my computer with the SETI screensaver and first saw it crunch data.

A thing of beauty. Here's to many more years of looking skywards.

Almost two years ago I wrote a post honoring SETI@Home on my blog:
https://carlkruse.org/seti-are-we-alone/

Cheers SETI@Home!
