Very sadly, I have not 'read deep', but I do have in my possession a copy of Hugh Thomas's 1997 book "The Slave Trade: the History of the Atlantic Slave Trade 1440-1870" (Simon & Schuster Inc., New York: I have the UK Picador edition, published the same year).

It opens with Zurara's description of a slave market in Lagos in 1444, following the arrival of 235 slaves from West Africa. They are described as being from a variety of [I presume} tribal backgrounds, from 'white enough', through mulattos, to 'as black as Ethiops' [sic - perhaps Nubians]. Thomas goes on to say that the slaves captured by the Portuguese raiders included men and women who had already been enslaved by the Azanaghi - shown on the map as occupying the area in West Africa between the Atlantic and Timbuktu.

And so on.

I'm sure that if I read the remaining 800 pages, I'll find descriptions of the events that Eye (sorry, should that be Dull? I find it hard to tell them apart) refers to: they are a documented part of the well-studied historical record. I'm only surprised it's taken him so long to discover them.

But the fact that sins were committed by both buyers and sellers all those centuries ago doesn't make them right - even by the standards of the time. Zurara's eye-witness report of that first slave market is quoted:

"What heart could be so hard as not to be pierced with piteous feeling to see that company?" ...

P.S. We do all know that the Roman empire was built on slavery too, don't we? Thomas's estimate is that half a million captives were required every year between 50 BC and 150 AD.
