Can not download tasks. Been playing with BOINC, Project Preferences, SETI@HOME, ANY entity involved on THIS site or MY computer.

Looking at the complete lack of any recorded applications for your current (Vista) computer I have to ask - are you letting BOINC have access to the outside world via your firewall?
Depending on BOINC being able to access to internet or not there are a whole host of other questions and options.

Check:
- that your computer's location and that of the preferences match: default, home, work or school.
- that you have the correct hardware options checked: Use CPU, use GPU and which one(s).
- that you didn't set the project to No New Tasks in BOINC Manager: the buttons show the option you have, not the state they're in.

Hi Bob,

TNX for ur reply.

Im a mite confused, at the VISTA reference. I have a Dell Inspiron 5459, WIN 10.

I also have McAfee LiveSafe [if only...] I have NEVER had a firewall problem and have never modified any 'wall settings. No other access problems have ever manifested with any sftwr.

BOINC has zero problem getting to any BOINC URL or website, from my computer {FireFox}.

I've even tried - in desperation - toggling between "No New Tasks" and "Allow Tasks". The msg in the STATUS field, in PROJECTS, obviates it being the problem - FLW.

Ive never emailed Neill de Grasse Tyson but I strongly support my amateur astronomy leanings that PIAP: Pluto Is A Planet : O)

Take it easy,

Phil

G' day Ageless,

Im very gratified to have u answer. Just to b sure, I AM posting to the public forum, not as a personal msg. Rite?

This is getting to b like a bad horror flick: my settings...WHO/WHAT changed all my settings???????? From MS I xpect this but from SCIENCE???? I deleted SCHOOL & WORK entirely. Do DEFAULT & HOME have to have the same settings? I THINK they do now, but...

In local preferences, I have nothing suspended and I can see options, only, to choose percentage of time the CPU is used and the max number of cores allowed. I have 1 i7 processor with 8 cores and 1 GPU. But how wd these prevent downloading [DL] tasks?

Unless I am, completely, bonkers I have NO NEW TASKS displayed on the button; STATUS field is blank, NOT "wont get new tasks".

Take care,

Phil

The Vista reference is because that computer shows to us when we look at your list of computers. Only by clicking 'show all computers' does your present system show up.

Who/what changed all your settings, is usually you. Unless you started a location anew, then it's us developers. 😀

Can you post the first 30/40 lines of your BOINC start up messages from the event log (CTRL+shift+E)? It may give us some clues.

And yes, you're typing in the public fora. 👍

Was there a Windows OS called VISTA - cant remember. The only connection to VISTA was my 1st floppy disk-drive system for a SOL-20!

LOL - I do take FULL responsibility for anything, as the PIC - pilot in command - but I reserve the right to think M-Soft first. The only thing "new" is missing ability to process SETI!

Well, it would appear there is some confussion about what operating system you are using - The servers are reporting you as having one current computer, this one:
https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=8670016
Which is reporting as running Windows Vista, 64-bit, Home Premium. The last time this computer contacted the servers was 04:10 UTC on 28 March 2019.
Looking at the hardware this may have been running Windows 10 until early February this year.

I would guess that you've managed to boot it with Vista, and it is trying to use a combination of both Windows 10 and Vista, probably the Windows 10 drivers, and they will not work correctly under Vista. It may be that the Vista boot you tried has done a partial installation, corrupting the Windows 10 installation. The only thing I can think might work is to try a Windows 10 repair installation, then get the nVidia drivers from nVidia and replace those that Windows will have installed.

Purely for a getting work stand point:

Go to https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/prefs.php?subset=project
Scroll down to Separate preferences for home
Look at what is checked:
- Use CPU
- Use ATI GPU
- Use Nvidia GPU
- Use Intel GPU

If none of those have a checkmark, or if one of the GPUs is checked, then that's the problem.

So click Edit preferences on the Home location and check Use CPU. Then click the green Update preferences button.

Next open BOINC Manager -> Projects -> Select Seti -> Update
If a time out is busy because your BOINC just contacted Seti, wait that one out. Is usually about five minutes. Then try again.

Hi Bob,

TNX for over-seeing my threads.

I am running WIN 10, Home, 64-bit, ver 1809, Build 17763.379, on a Dell Inspiron 5459.

Dell "premium" tech support" had me reinstall WIN 10 and made sure all drivers were current & appropriate; even updated the BIOS.

If this can help, I am at ur complete disposal! Heck, this is MS... I LIVE in an unknown universe!

Take care,

Phil

Say Jord,
Hope ur getting ready for summer.

1st I must reiterate my plaintiff, "who the hell changed all these settings"? By the ETIs close to us, I have zero xperience fooling with these.

2nd, did u actually get sum clues from the EVENT LOG? May I plead for a brief xplanation? Knowledge, & all that jazz, as my favorite Chemistry prof wd delineate before apprising us what was cuming : O)

I UNchecked all GPU boxes; only CPU is now checked. As soon as BOINC opened, I got a NOTICE my settings do not allow tasks.

As always, UPDATE is making me wait-out the 5 min. At the end of the FIRST 5 minute interval, communication is now deferred another 5 min... Now in the 3rd 5-min penalty, saying the Scheduler was deferred and now communication is, yet agn, deferred.

Status line went blank and now is still blank. WHOA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ive got FOUR tasks running!!

U r a genius, as always. May I ask how I can tell if my system is employing the GPU? Is it "better" to have the GPU participate in processing?????

What is the max tasks I can have running at 1 time?

Oh, I lied: I have SIX tasks running!!!!

I dont suppose a bottle of Chateaux Rothschild is warranted?

THANK U, Jord! When ETI visit, U may have MY place at the head of the line!

Take care,
Phil

Are You Really sure it's on your Philsard Account or another one newer ?

open Boinc manager, Advanced view , Project Tab , clic on Setiathome project and then clic on property button ..

then :

you will see the:
User name ?

Which says:

I space them out specifically. See how your OS is identified as OS: Microsoft Windows Vista: Home Premium x64 Edition, Service Pack 2 ? It's not something we make up.

Now, you say that "Dell "premium" tech support" had me reinstall WIN 10", how did you do that? Was that with a reinstall CD, or from a hidden partition on your machine? Because then the original OS that was installed on the machine when you bought it will have been put back. Searching the internet, that makes it possible that was Windows Vista. You will have to separately reinstall Windows 10 on it. You can't even upgrade install it as the minimum Windows version required for the upgrade is Windows 7, you will need to download the Windows 10 ISO and burn it to a CD/DVD to boot up with that.

That this is definitely the computer making contact with Seti shows itself as you now have a full cache of CPU only tasks. showing in https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=8670016
To be able to use the GPU again, you require the GPU's drivers, gotten from the manufacturer's website. Although that seems to be your Intel GPU, which is built into the CPU and costs a lot in electricity to crunch a task, perhaps wiser to not use it.

Hi guys {gals?},

Im addressing this missive to: Jord & KISSAGOGO27 & Bernie Vine. I cant find a way to email all at once, but have posted identical copies to Bernie & The Kiss,

R any of u alluding to any foul plays, here? Until 5 seconds ago, I had NO cognizance of what a Computer ID WAS, let alone how to decode the number in the PROPERTIES pane to text!

WHOA!!!!!!!! R any of u harboring a, fasle, illusion I arrogate to any of u "making-up" stuff, here? I am MOST CERTAINLY not! Jord has been nothing less than incredibly giving of time, effort & patience and has solved every 1 of my dilemmas, which have manifested ONLY within the interim between M-S*it's destruction of the BOINC screen saver to the present instant.

The WIN10 reinstall was VERY illuminating — and a major reason I decry & derogate tech supp with XCEPTION of BOINC/SETI/et al; THIS time, the guy went to a MS website, which appears to b an "alternate" venue for [RE-]installing WIN, as opposed to the usual, destructive automatic download and install. To wit: I was able to [RE-]install Windows WITHOUT - WITHOUT - sh**-canning ANY programs, data files or dust on the monitor. A secret SO secret, it mite rehabilitate even MicroSoft's tarnished, dirty reputation.

Sum history, if u will permit: my 1st Dell Inspiron was "defective"; by the time Dell's XPERT PREMIUM tech supporters got thru, the FAN was replaced and Dell finally relented to a sojourn to the repair depot. Diagnosis? Failed CPU [I contacted Intel and they, well, laffed and forwarded a MTBF equation]. The present system is the replacement computer, which xhibited ALL previous system faults, in the same order but so rare, I can live with it [VERY unlike the sftwr in a 737 MAX]. I was forced to reinstall WIN ONCE, by a "Dell | Advanced Resolution Group" guru, which changed nothing. Why THAT reinstall did NOT divorce ANY previous system identity from anything on the hard drives BEFORE the reinstall, I am at a loss to fathom. I consign any & all system ID issues to all ur, particular, xpertise and xperience.

I will fore-go GPU use on ur recommendation. I thank u all for taking an interest in this thread/issue and my gratitude for successful resolution.

Hi Jord,

System still humming... TNX!

I looked at my preferences and CPU is UNchecked and Intel GPU IS checked. Referring to ur instructions that fixed everything, this seems rather incongruous. The Intel 530 graphics card, GPU driver is installed & up-to-date.

R any of u alluding to any foul plays, here?

No not at all and I am sorry if my post suggested that.

What I and I am sure others are puzzled about is you saying you "re-installed" Windows 10 when your computer reports it is running Windows Vista which stopped being available in 2010, and which stopped getting updates two years ago.

When computers connect to SETI@Home they send basic information to the servers, this info is not personally identifiable in any way but is a valuable tool in situations like this when people ask for help.

This is what we see when we look at your computer

If you look at the "Operating system" it says Microsoft Windows Vista.

Here is the same entry for one of my computers.

As you can see it says Microsoft Windows 10

So we are at a loss to suggest why you believe you are running Windows 10.

Again no suggestion of foul play of any sort.

Hey Bernie,

I fear ur questions r going WAY beyond my competence. I apologize for filtering ur help thru ignorance, which triggered a purely a defense mind-set. I have followed ONLY directives, guidelines & instructions, posited by vendors, in setting-up or configuring sftwr. I have no info, knowledge or belief that BOINC cd, even, communicate with ANY entity other than the Berkeley website, firewall or no [McAfee]. I contacted Dell Tech Supp to resolve these issues; I have no other recourse, unless u r willing to accept private emails, back & forth [altho I have NO qualms doing this openly, but I assume these msg boards r NOT for protracted, on-going assistance]. U have illumined facets of computers which I didnt know exist. I trust we r dealing with, only, confusion, without doing any harm to the project.

Take it easy,

Phil

The second picture Berne posted is one of HIS computers.
The first picture is YOUR computer, take a look at this link:
https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/hosts_user.php?userid=1122002

Now, how this has come about when you think you re-installed Windows 10 is very strange.
All I can think is that you did the re-installation from the restore partition on your Dell - as far as I'm aware that partition can only be created, and written to, by Dell, or by do a complete "flatten and restart" installation from a full-install Windows disk (which totally reformats and re-partitions the hard disk), not from the more normal "just install this OS" installation that most of us do.
In fact I think that some of the OEM install disks will look to see if there is some form of recovery partition around, and will use that, despite the fact you've started by using the DVD.

Yo Bob,

A little Twilite-Zone, here? I just composed an email to Bernie [pse tell me I did not substitute "Bernie" for "Berne"] and caught my, stupid, misteak of saying HIS computer details were MINE. How did u know????

I xplained, to him, my being left at sea vis-a-vis isssues u r now hilighting. Perusing the "Disk Management" utility, I can find no errors in partitions or other HDD entities, suggested by ur generous help.

I contacted Dell Tech Supp - such as it is - for help. At this juncture, having reinstalled WIN10 twice in the last 3 months, however unclean, I will consider 3-times-is-the-charm, only after xhausting every other avenue.

Of course, I welcum any & all insites u provide!

Success in SETI,

Phil
