On 1999/05/17, SETI@home was publicly/officially lauched. But of course, it was already up and running
on March 1st, 1999 - if not before -, hence this new thread.

See ya - soon, too soon - here :)

Welcome to the 19 Year Club!

I still have a couple of months to go before I hit the big 20.

I also started a thread in the Cafe last year about a new t-shirt for this year, but it got locked due to inactivity.

Seems your nefarious but cunning plan worked, betreger, as Uli again is graciously accepting orders for the 20th anniversary tee here on this thread !

Congrats to all those of you who've reached or who'll soon reach this momentous anniversary ^^

Has anyone worked out yet how to make 1?

Cheers.

I've got 20 years in today (crunching since 12 Apr 1999). I tip my hat to all of the scientists, volunteers and others who have kept this project moving forward. IIRC my first CPU was a Cyrix 6x86MX that ran at 133 MHz.

Edited to add: I also want to thank the helpful people on this forum who have added so much to helping others like myself.

I turned 20 (Seti years) today.
In those days it was an Intel 486 CPU. The first Seti application downloaded was setiathome-3.08.i686-pc-linux-gnu that reported an integer benchmark of 268 MIPS. And running Linux kernel 2.0.30, which took me two months to get running in a DOS 5.0 environment. I didn't run 24/7 in those days and for internet connection it was a dial-up modem capable of a "blazing" 14,400 bps. It was in that month (April '99) that local dial-up internet access became available - i.e. no more long-distance toll charges - and that motivated me to participate in the Seti project. Work units were a week-long endeavor. I notice in my "Seti Classic" statistics having completed 141 work units, with 6924 CPU hours, over a 6 1/2 year interval. Golly... network speed is now a hundred times faster, CPU speeds are a hundred times faster, and GPU speed another ten times that (all "round" numbers, of course).
Now I have my sights set on the 25 year goal!
I expect to see a flurry of posts to this thread in the next few months. 1999 was the beginning of the very rapid rise in Seti activity.

A short reminder : some SETI@home 20th Anniversary tees (B or W, M L XL and/or 2XL) are still available ($13 USD+shipping tbd depending on destination country) - Uli still welcomes orders and/or inquieries at https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=84069 ^^

Was hoping to cross a million RAC for my 20th... SETIversary? AnniverSETI?... today, but doesn't look like that is going to happen. :^) It's been a good two decades anyway. When this project first started I predicted it would be at least twenty years before the hardware, algorithms and techniques were sophisticated enough to make a discovery (plus there's that much space to listen to.) With the recent developments of Breakthrough Listen, two more signal sources, the computing power of modern GPUs and the optimized clients to achieve their full potential, it seems we're just about there.

Edit: Thank you, Zalster. :^) And congrats to Gene, Dave Lewis, XArchAngel and of course Pierre Renaud on your 20ths!

It was 20 years ago today...

That's when I D/Loaded my first Seti@Home WU. I remember it took 5 days to work that first unit. When the screen started displaying 'seti@home needs your attention' (using dial-up to get WUs) I got very excited! I thought that I had found ET. Nope, just need another WU. Little did I know that I would still be doing this 2 decades later.

I don't remember what rig I was using at the time (I built it from scratch) but I do remember the MoBo used 2 separate AMD CPUs. This is before the days of dual core CPUs and I thought it was very advanced (which it was for it's day). Dial-up was my only access to the net.

Original seti WUs:

SETI@home classic workunits 1,554
SETI@home classic CPU time 34,635 hours

BOINC WUs:

Total credit 2,621,846
Recent average credit 2,954.21

What a long strange trip it's been,
