This was a post today from 1usmus, the wizard Ryzen RAM Calculator developer regarding the Windows May 2019 1903 release in his Overclock.net forum thread. Ouch! That is oh so... 'old'!! So Windows uses a Multilevel feedback queue from ideas c 1962. I read that as essentially a tweaked dumb brute-force trivially simple round-robin list of tasks that has the penalty of blindly imposing (costly) context switches upon each 'scheduler' interrupt. How crude, but then again if it works 'well enough' then why bother with anything else? In comparison, Linux currently uses the Completely Fair Scheduler that "implements a 'timeline' of future task execution". That particular scheduler is enabled by default: You have a choice of other schedulers should you wish to select them. The Linux schedulers are all under constant review and have seen some impressive advances for new ideas and developments. IT is what we make it... I notice that with the BOINC cpu percentage fixed at 50% and the 1060 GPU being scheduled optimally that the crunching numbers are increasing. Indeed I have jut acquired position 1 for Isle of Man which is not bad for three years work. Team Isle of Man is still in the 700s but is improving and perhaps when Threadripper 3 arrives with its 64/128 configuration and th memory access fixed I can improve more! With the gpu in place I am going to change the BOINC percentage to 100% for a week from next Saturday on the 2990 just to confirm that this will significantly drop the throughput. jsm |

I notice that with the BOINC cpu percentage fixed at 50% and the 1060 GPU being scheduled optimally that the crunching numbers are increasing. Everyone's RAC has been increasing even if they did nothing to their system due to the amount of Arecibo work that has been around for the last couple of weeks. It looks like we're now out of Arecibo work, so people's RAC will start falling again unless we get some more in the next week or so. Grant Darwin NT |

Please let us know what the results are. I would love to see if there is "something" (besides throwing more gpus onto the system) that will improve the production of a 2990x. Who knows, maybe something has changed (besides the Ryzen 3000 announcement(s)). :) Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

14 days ~ to 7/7Although I have no intentions of making a purchase on the new platform anytime soon, I am really excited to see how the new architecture performs! By the way, I thought you would be able to preorder CPUs and motherboards by now, but I don't see anything on Newegg. Not that I'm advocating one should preorder, I'm just surprised it isn't available yet. Seti@home classic: 1,456 results, 1.613 years CPU time |

If I remember from previous Ryzen launches, it was a 1 week interval for pre-order till launch. May be different this time. I don't think review embargoes lift till 7/7. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

If my finances have recovered from the latest unplanned expenses (aka: Son's Sewer backup, Cat Illness) I will be ordering an APU upgrade (3400G) because I really want to be running my APU with Zen+ even if it is under WinDOZE (sp :) Otherwise I really have no excuse. The cpu upgrade money could be used to upgrade gpus... Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

Wish me luck for tomorrow... I'm firing up a new 1950x Threadripper machine that's going to replace my Dell T7400... All of this has happened before and will happen again -Battlestar Galactica |

Good luck. What mobo and RAM did you go with? Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Good luck. What mobo and RAM did you go with? I actually came across a brand new Alienware Area 51 R3 Threadripper babrebones machine. It was sold by a Dell warranty service center and it was never used. So it’s Dells X399 motherboard made by MSI. I got 32GB of Corsair Vengeance LPX X399 compatible @2666Mhz as that’s what the motherboard supports. It’ll be air cooled with a BeQuiet! Dark Rock Pro Tr4 edition, 3 120mm Delta intake fans and one 120mm delta exhaust fan. The stock psu is also 850w gold so I’ll be able to throw in another gpu to go with my GTX 1060 I’m bringing over from my Dell T7400. That should work for just a stock barebones machine. Not expecting to do much with the cpu with the stock memory clock speed. Again, no drama settling for stock but of course faster memory would have let the 1950X stretch its legs. If the cpu is just to drive the gpus, then again not to worry. You can fit two more 1060 gpus to the motherboard I assume if the MSI board was as HEDT platform board and not some gaming version. At least you can just select XMP for the memory in the BIOS and call it quits and not have to attempt tuning for better memory clocks and timings. If you want any suggestions for the setup of the BIOS, then refer to this thread or ask. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Just pulled up the web page for that machine. You said barebones but I didn't see any version of that in the configurator. The lowest featured version shows an 120mm AIO for the CPU and a AMD graphics card. The AIO is ehhh . . . at only 120mm. The AMD gpu is going to cause problems with the Nvidia gpus with their opposing OpenCL stacks. I didn’t get this machine through Alienware... it was a warranty replacement machine at a Dell warranty service center and they never used it. It’s a brand new barebones with just the case, psu, motherboard and all of the wiring. I had to buy the cpu and memory and a couple more fans. I wont be using Alienwares crappy 120mm aio since that didn’t come with the case. I listed the air cooler above I’ll be using and there’s no amd gpu with this machine. I’m bringing my 1060 over from my current machine. All of this has happened before and will happen again -Battlestar Galactica |

Here's the computer... Initial fitting of the cooler to make sure it fit in the case... A very fitting logo for the job it'll be performing lol All of this has happened before and will happen again -Battlestar Galactica |

Gotcha. OK, actually barebones. That case sure if funky though. At least the mobo allows for four gpus. The BeQuiet cooler should be fine for just stock clocks with natural boosts. I see what you mean about being a custom mobo with only 4 memory slots. Did you get a good price on the cpu? I have been seeing some decent deals as vendors are trying to clear old stock in anticipation of the TR2 cpus later this year. There have been lots of great memory deals also for the slower RAM speeds like 2666. I think you said you got some Corsair LPX sticks which will clear the air cooler easily. Hope you purchased 4 sticks so you have 4 channel memory access. TR really gets bent out of shape with only 2 sticks. Yeah I have so much more room in this machine to expand for the future and I have been wanting a Threadripper 1950x for such a long time that when this computer was presented to me for less than I can buy all the parts contained in the barebones setup I couldn't say no! Right now the 1950x is $499 and I doubt that price will drop until AMD launches the 16 core desktop Ryzen 3000 7nm varient and Threadripper 3 is slated for Q3/Q4 this year so I am betting around Christmas we will see the first 7nm Threadripper chips come to market. Yeah the only downside to this board is the memory speed support for 2666 and 2933... I looked at some benchmarks and it wasn't worth the extra money to go 2933Mhz when the 2666 was right up there with the same'ish performance. I did indeed get a 4x8GB quad channel memory setup and this Corsair LPX is on their list for 100% X399 compatibility. The good thing is that Dell used a regular ATX setup in these cases so any time in the future I can just throw in an aftermarket motherboard and go! This is going to be a really good upgrade... now the question is. Do I get a few more GTX 1060's or just wait until prices fall and pick up 2 Radeon VII's LOL! I like your new threadripper setup! I'm curious to see how the TR1950x, TR2950x, and upcoming R9 3950x 16 core CPUs all compare to each other for BOINC tasks. I plant to build a new PC, and would like to know which would be the best for the money. (total cost of building, power efficiency, etc). |
