Those 4 in 1 adapters you were using have a PLX chip in them. That’s how they got 4 GPUs on one PCIe lane.

Ah. So the 1 to 8 adapter I have ordered should have one of those in there too. Intel motherboards have an "Above 4G" setting. And one Am4 socket MB from Biostar has an "Above 4G" setting.

On two different Asus Am4 socket motherboards, I have not been able to run more than 6 GPUs to run even using my 1 to 4 card. And I have not been able to find anything like an Above 4G setting.

I wonder if there are any other Amd Am4 motherboards that have an "Above 4G" setting or perhaps have it named differently so I don't recognize it.

Am4 Motherboards that possibly have "Above 4G" available.

1) Biostar B350-BTC. I have owned/own this MB and it has "Above 4G" available in the Bios. I have run upto 9 gpus with an 1 to 4 expander card but I am not confident of its stablity.
2) Fatal1ty X370 Gaming K4, came up in Google search can't confirm.
3) MSI B350M MORTAR, came up in a Google search can't confirm.

Motherboards that almost certainly don't have "Above 4G" available in the bios unless it is hidden under other terminology. Both have demonstrated very high levels of stability.

4) I have a hit from MSI about updated Bios with "Above 4G" support added with a Bios update. Its a MSI B350 Gaming Plus
https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/B350-GAMING-PLUS Searched this page with a string search and got the hit. Found via Google search.
5) MSI X470 Gaming Plus https://files.bbystatic.com/UYu3Wk7r%2F9w5wqnZ2opwYw%3D%3D/441A6CFB-2FE3-46B1-9765-DCBAF3067092.pdf Referenced in this PDF file. Found via Google Search.
6) MSI® MPG X570-A PRO
7) Gigabyte B450M DS3H
8) Gigabyte b450 aorus pro

Ok, now to take a look at reviews.

You didn't look at that link I provided in an earlier post. There is a pageful of boards specifically listed for Above 4G decoding at MSI. Over 60 boards. Looks like the entire product stack.

Pardon the intrusion, but I just wanted to add a data point. I looked at that list and the motherboard I have is not on there, but it has the "Above 4G" option. The motherboard is the MSI Performance Gaming X470 and I can't say I recommend it, just wanted to share the info. It seems to validate that just about all MSI boards have that option.

Edit: Just looked it up the my board is actually the "MSI X470 Gaming Plus".

Thank you for the above URL. Now all I have to do is figure out which ones are Am4 and possibly have 6 pcie slots :)

Sorry. My brain is apparently fuzzy. I can't find that previous link. Could you find that post and either PM me or post the link here?

Thank you.

Not real happy with the the above list. The reviews said the Power setup was possibly inferior or they have 5 slots etc....

Huh ? ? The link is in your quote. The boards are rather easy to figure out just by the names with the chipset name. H and Z's are obviously Intel. And since no board has B350 or B450 in their name, the B boards must belong to Intel also.

Duh, I told you my brain was fuzzy! I see a possible candidate on that list but I have committed to another solution that Ian has very good technical questions about. So I will be tagging that replacement if I decide to try to run more than 6 gpus on my Amd 3950x.

Here are some notes on the question.

MSI AM4 X570 MB with 6 slots - confirm before you order
MSI MPG X570 GAMING EDGE WIFI with AMD X570 ATX Motherboard - Socket AM4
MSI MPG X570 GAMING PLUS with AMD X570 ATX Motherboard - Socket AM4 - cheaper than above.
MSI X570-A Pro with AMD X570 ATX Motherboard - Socket AM4 - 5 slots
X470 w/6 slots
MSI X470 GAMING PLUS MAX with AMD X470 ATX Motherboard - Socket AM4 - cheapest 6 slot solution from MSI, I suspect.

The reason I am even wondering around on this is that if the great MSI B360-F Pro gpu experiment proves unsatisfactory (whatever that means) I would still like to see how many GPUs I can run stably on a 6 Pcie slot AM4 socket MB with the 1 to 8 expansion card (13?) and the "Above 4G" toggle in the bios.
And eventually, consolidate into a 3950x plus more than 6 GPUs system.

Since, in theory, the B360-F Pro with its 18 Pcie slots should run 18 GPUs I will go there first. I have already demonstrated to my satisfaction that an array of less then RTX 2080Ti's can compete by having more GPUs than a box with a smaller number of higher-end GPUs. So let us try the extremes here.
