NY man discovers 30 year old Apple computer still in working order

John Pfaff dusted off the old computer that has been sitting in his parent’s attic for decades, and to his surprised it still turned on.

... Pfaff showed off the vintage system to his own children and their reaction is what you’d expect from a generation that has moved on to an iPhone X.

“My oldest, who is 9, exclaimed “that’s a computer?!” in genuine surprise, and then pointed at the floppy drives and asked “what are those?” My younger twins just kept laughing at how silly it seemed to them.”

I have an AT&T Olivetti UNIX PC still working with UNIX Version 5, a 40 MB hard disk and a 2.5 MB RAM, dated 1986. That is 33 year old. It has also a primitive GUI with a three buttons mouse and can run the LOGO turtle.

I have a Whirlpool clothes washer that I bought in 1980 and after 39 years, it still works.

I'm still waiting for Wednesday, it's the day I run out of bread, I have 1.5 loaves left, I need 4 loaves of Natures One 100% whole Wheat(60Calories on back), I'm also low on Chunky Peanut Butter and Strawberry Jam, I need a ride to Food4Less in Barstow CA from Yermo CA and back, while My car is awaiting an engine and the person who could give Me a ride is sick. Sorry there is no public transportation here as I live on the wrong side of a fwy.

I don't think anyone here could help, but what if I was wrong? That would be bad, very bad.

I'm still using Notepad on Windows instead of VI on Unix.

Dumped VI for VIM (but I still love TECO)

TECO is the basis for Emacs that many prefer instead of VI.
But VI and it's successor VIM is very "powerful" when editing.
A feature is for instance when pressing <ESC> S that stop your editing and you have to start all over again:)

As a simple and better update try 'Notepad2mod' (and associate txt etc to it.)

I remember old Amstrad Word-processing.

I am not a fan of keyboard shortcuts beyond copy, paste and switch windows \ apps ;\

Unless you are hell bent on being a complete programming \ text aficionado VI / VIM / or variations for Linux \ Windows or GNU are difficult to master.

Metapad is also a great alternative to Notepad.

Are those editors also localized to other languages?
Like handling letters like ÅÖÄ?
Maybe they are.
Then you also have to learn all these keyboard shortcuts like in VI.
Instead of ESC commands you use CTRL commands like this.
Ctrl+Alt+F2 Expand selection to next match.
Ctrl+Alt+Shift+F2 Expand selection to previous match.
Ctrl+Shift+Enter New line with toggled auto indent option.
Sigh....

Western Unicode..

Try handeling:

단어는 항상 회사를 사랑합니다.

I guess all we need is an application that serves our needs.

Not all simple notepads will do that though there are quite a few revisions on github. Open to all.

단어는 항상 회사를 사랑합니다.
It works with Notepad as well.
However you get a warning when trying to save it if you are not in the right mode.
But frankly I don't understand why there are perhaps hundreds of editors available doing the same thing.

I don't think GitHub is supporting Notepad that is a Windows product though.
Whatever. I like KISS products more:)

I guess a notepad application is the same as "Hello World".. Thousands of people want to share their first main creations even if they are premature.

Bless them all. :)

I did not mean MS Notepad..

www.portablefreeware.com has a good collection of notepads from small to large... KISS included.

Programmer's Notepad might suit some.

I'm now a retired system developer but still keeping support to our costumers.
After more than 30 years in the Biz i find it a PITA to adopt to new tools like a new editor!
The new editors require a LOT of times to learn and doesn't improve my performance at all.
I will stay with my KISS editor as for now:)

So you should.

Was just discussing some editors that were not too far away but might have useful extras.

If we are being basic I still use "Edit" some times.

Nano is nice.

Any other editor would have to better than Edlin was.

Oh happy days:)
If I remember right nano and pico is almost like VI. I think they still come bundled in the Linux package.
Together with line editors like ed and edit.
And MS DOS had Edlin...
Well if you're programming in Cobol you should be aware off that a line can only consist of 79 characters plus an underscore if you want a continuation...
