Marvellous! The 2016 bill for foreign aid was £13.4 billion. Here at home, cut public services to the bone. Never mind, the "guys & gals in green" are there to solve problems.
Armed forces 'always' ready to help, says defence secretary

Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson has said the armed forces are "always" ready to help the police and will do everything they can to ensure Gatwick opens again as soon as possible.
"Sussex Police have requested assistance and support from the armed forces and we will be deploying the armed forces to give them the help that they need to be able to deal with the situation of the drones at Gatwick Airport," Mr Williamson said.
"It goes to demonstrate how our armed forces are always there ready to support the civilian authorities."
When asked how the armed forces would assist, Mr Williamson responded: "Sadly at this moment it's not something we can actually reveal but the armed forces have a range of unique capabilities and this isn't something we would usually deploy but we are there to assist and do everything we can so that they are in a position to open the airport at the earliest opportunity."
An army spokesman said specialist equipment is being deployed at Gatwick Airport.

Prime Minister Theresa May said the perpetrators will be caught, and face a prison sentence.
You couldn't organise a p*** up in a brewery or an orgy in a brothel May. Maybe you should have the Army resolve your Brexit problems. :-)
Pretty sure they would do a much better job. :-)

Oh dear.
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-46654797
A further drone sighting has again disrupted the UK's second biggest airport, with flights grounded and passengers unable to fly.
Aircraft were left circling above the area during the latest alert, which came at about 17:10 GMT. Flights resumed less than 90 minutes later.

Couple arrested in Drone Incidents released without any charges filed.

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/8050136/gatwick-drone-boss-arrested-soldier-reveals-agony/
An interesting example of how 'Premature and Incomplete News' can become 'Fake News'.

It seems to be true that this couple were taken in for police questioning, and later released. But between those two events, no fewer than four mass-circulation newspapers published their names and photographs on their front pages: BBC newspaper review. That round-up doesn't include the 'Sun on Sunday', so I don't know if they should be added to the list. The Telegraph, Mail, Mirror and Express used the couple's omage as the front-page picture story, in full studio HD: not a long range blurry pap job. No chance they can escape recognition tomorrow morning.

The Mail goes so far as to print "ARE THESE THE MORONS WHO RUINED CHRISTMAS?" alongside their pictures. Something tells me that "no, they weren't" will be in rather smaller type tomorrow, and probably buried on page 37.

The police say that a member of the public suggested they might be implicated, because of their known interest in flying drones as a hobby. Fair enough to ask the questions, but the police are adamant that they didn't release the names to the press (and sound rather cross that somebody else did). But 36 hours seems rather a long time to find out that "Paul ... was innocent as he was at work while the drones were bringing Gatwick to its knees.", according to his boss.

Meanwhile, the police have recovered a damaged and fallen drone from the airport perimeter, and are examining it forensically. That sounds more like proper police work.

Ah yes, Keystone coppers throw a dragnet out and catch what?

Shall we wait and see what fingerprints and DNA is on that fallen drone. Likely to find some neighborhood kid who lost that drone a year ago.

No, they are going to have to shoot down or net down one of the drones and trace its serial number and then maybe look through thousands of hours of video to see who might have bought it and dragnet hundreds of persons of interest. If they are lucky they might get a fingerprint or DNA match off the drone they catch in flight.

This is a kind of terrorist act that is far to easy to do and stay anonymous. It is only if you are poor and want the drone back after disrupting that they have a chance of catching you. Or if you don't pre-program the flight and are dumb enough to transmit radio up-link.

Of course a good terrorist who wants more than publicity, say blood, would use a swarm of drones all in contact with each other and intentionally ram landing aircraft. And once they stop operations and put a helicopter up to try and find a drone, give them a bait drone to chase and then come in from behind with a couple and take the helicopter down.

Speaking of this, a possible military tactic against a aircraft carrier would be to civilian overfly the carrier at a high altitude and airdrop a couple hundred AI drones. They can keep up with the ship easily and disrupt air operations until their batteries are dead. More than enough time for the enemy to fly in close and fire a barrage of air to ship missiles and sink the carrier. In the age of AI connected things warfare has changed forever.

Message 1971698 - Posted: 23 Dec 2018, 19:15:46 UTC - in response to Message 1971690.

A colleague asked me to explain and critique an article titled "5G: The Final Assault" today.

I don't think the author is thinking (yet) about the sort of assault that involves an aircraft carrier (though that may come later), but instead he starts by talking about the ground-level electromagetic millimetre-wave smog that will be emitted by Elon Musk's fleet of 7,518 satellites. I think inverse-square will take care of that (though we had some conversation about the effects on extreme sensitives): a more likely cause of health concerns would be the act of replying with a handheld transmitter, without benefit of ground-level repeater. He doesn't seem to mention whether the satellites will have phased-array receivers too.

I think the rest of the article is about the social uses to which the "internet of things" will be put, whether by 'us' or 'them'. I'll have to see what the rest of it says, though I'm not encouraged by the author's thumbnail bio: "philosopher, cultural historian, and gardener". Hmm.

PS what happens on an interconnected world of things, when the thing-net goes down? Just being announced that another airport has closed (Birmingham, UK): this time it's being called an air traffic control fault. Hmm, again.

It's been stated that the drones were "industrial specification". So simple, hardwire a transponder into them that cannot be disabled & activates as soon as it's airborne.

OMG! What are we employing in this country?
Police at Britain's biggest airports are set to be armed with drone-killing bazookas in the wake of the chaos.
Questions as to why MPs refused to sanction team of military electronic warfare specialists to halt the drone.

In that case, this question raises its ugly head:
Questions as to why MPs refused to sanction team of military electronic warfare specialists to halt the drone.
If this becomes a recurring theme, then airports have to be protected & any arguments over costs can be answered by: What are the costs to airport disruption?

Unknown. All that is known so far:
The Gatwick Airport drone drama which grounded hundreds of flights has been discussed by ministers in a Christmas Eve conference call.

The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.: ‘A great majority of the so-called educated people do not think logically and scientifically’

Too bad the orange supporters fall into this ...
Education must also train one for quick, resolute and effective thinking. To think incisively and to think for one’s self is very difficult. We are prone to let our mental life become invaded by legions of half truths, prejudices, and propaganda. At this point, I often wonder whether or not education is fulfilling its purpose. A great majority of the so-called educated people do not think logically and scientifically. Even the press, the classroom, the platform, and the pulpit in many instances do not give us objective and unbiased truths. To save man from the morass of propaganda, in my opinion, is one of the chief aims of education. Education must enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction.
