Got a dozen errors and I wonder why on only this computer. Finish file present too long errors. Computer too busy or didn't wait long enough for BOINC processes to stop before turning computer off. Fix is to wait a couple of minutes after stopping BOINC or update to client version 7.16.3 or greater. Finish file present too long errors. Computer too busy or didn't wait long enough for BOINC processes to stop before turning computer off. Would another fix be to lower the total available cpu threads slightly to free up the "overcommitted" issue? Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

Yes, the issue is the cpu not having enough time to clear out the files because the cpu is too busy with work or has not enough speed or resources to handle the I/O because of multiple gpus for example spitting out results and checkpoints and having slow storage. Could help by changing over to SSD or PCIe M.2 storage over spinning rust storage as a possible fix. Sonnet Unveils Solo5G: A USB-C to 5 GbE Network Adapter Adoption of NBASE-T networks is proceeding slowly due to two reasons: expensive Multi-Gig Ethernet switches and sporadic support of NBASE-T by PCs. Fortunately, higher-end desktops as well as gaming laptops are finally getting native NBASE-T support, but when it comes to mainstream and ultra-thin machines, such support is a rare occurrence; so to gain Multi-Gig support they need external USB adapters. AMD's chiplet design affords massive cost-cutting opportunities According to AMD’s slides, a third generation Ryzen processor with 16 cores built on a hypothetical monolithic 7nm process would cost more than twice as much as the chiplet version that puts the I/O on a cheaper process. The device supports 5GBASE-T, 2.5GBASE-T, 1000BASE-T, 100BASE-TX networks over Cat5e cables at up to 100 meters. Still need a router or switch capable of 5GBASE-T, 2.5GBASE-T, 1000BASE-T speeds to hook up all the devices in the network. Those are still very expensive. I not sure whether I am helping contributing to the database issues. I am trying to decide whether or not when I run out of work in approximately 4 hours the majority of my work has not been _2 or higher. I processed these tasks as soon as I saw them. TIA for any assistance |

TIA for any assistance This might come under the heading of micro-managing which is usually a very bad idea. On the other hand, if you were running hundreds of boxes or the data center equivalent then it probably could make a difference. Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

TIA for any assistanceGiven that your average turn-around time is >1/2 day, it would seem to me that trying to optimize that further is probably not worth the effort. |

Tom and Jim from what you have said I understand it as you are saying the following.. I would be better to move my GPU to another science? Just to clarify my question was about _2 tasks it was about processing in general |

Anything to reduce the number of tasks sitting around waiting for their siblings to return to base is a good thing, so getting through that small number of "_2" will have helped a teeny-weeny bit. You running out of work in a few hours also have an impact, provided those tasks get validated very quickly. But the impact will be tiny, now if one of the heavy weight spoofers were to do the same, and then live within the 150-per limit the impact would be far greater. Tom and Jim from what you have said I understand it as you are saying the following.. I would be better to move my GPU to another science? Just to clarify my question was about _2 tasks it was about processing in general No, not at all, you're doing fine! I would never suggest that anyone "go away"! If anything, I'm always looking out for opportunities to get more folks involved or involved at a higher level, and share the little bit I've learned when I can be helpful. I was suggesting that there's no reason to spend your time trying to prioritize certain tasks within the S@H project over others, in hopes that it will make the servers run better, assuming I understood your question correctly. On average, you return a task within 1/2 a day. This is great. If you were taking 2-3 weeks to return tasks then perhaps it would make sense to try and push the resends (_2 and higher) towards the top of the stack to ease database load if there were a lot of them. In general, though, BOINC does a pretty good job of handling things on a first in, first out basis, and there needs to be a good reason to try to override that logic. Jim ... |

New Nvidia GPU spotted in benchmark database. Contained within the Geekbench entries are the GPUs' OpenCL benchmark scores. The big one reaches 184,096 points and the little one (isn’t that an oxymoron) gets 141,654. For comparison, the RTX 2080 Ti gets roughly 130,000. Grant Darwin NT |
