I've had enough of all Windows bashing

Well to be fair I have not seen any "user bashing" .

... But don't let me disturb the command line club, by all means. Just let it continue and let SETI output fall.

But, but, but,

Do you not still have the old DOS prompt and even the newer (ta-dah!) MS PowerShell?...

Best of all, you have a choice!

Meanwhile, the s@h output continues to rise, ever faster with the ever faster GPUs.

Congratulations Jimbocous, you just made the top 20!

Tom

Yes, congratz to Jimbocous.

Wow. No kidding? Hadn't noticed. All kudos to the toolmakers! I just use 'em.

And now you are ranked #15. You seem to have been feeding that system Wheaties lately.

KWW, Kilowatt Wheaties. I like it.
Fun to see how much I can squeeze out of this ancient hardware.

I was looking at the Top 20 Leader board and it looks like "everyone" is increasing their RAC's. Not much change in ranking but clearly the mix has gone to something that generates a higher RAC.

That's the effect of the Arecibo being available ATM Tom. ;-)

Tom,

Didn't you get the memo about adding Whiskey to the fuel tank to thin out the mix? Gives the engines a little extra kick!!

And, I suspect, the tendency of folks to keep adding to and tweaking the systems. In example, I've added 6xGTX980s to the stable this year, 4 in the last month, as I gradually retire 750TIs to better benefit from the performance gains of the Linux apps and get my arms around techniques that work for adding this many GPUs to single systems.

Yes, I continue to fall further behind on the leader board as my stable of gpus has been static for a year. I can't compete against the miner configurations with 6 or more gpus in a host or the four RTX 2080Ti hosts.

I have only been increasing the cpu horsepower lately which we know is not as effective as gpu upgrades. Was able to finally order a Ryzen 9 3950X for my daily driver at the proper MSRP today. That will help a bit. Will be able to move the 3900X to the last Seti 2700X host which should pull it up the ranks a bit.

For those looking to upgrade their storage, a review from Techspot.
This review isn't so much to show which drive in a particular category is best, but rather, to show how different types and tiers of drives stack up in common applications.

I've about hit the wall there, in that my boxes have a BIOS limit of 7 GPUs per, it would seem.

Still running relatively ancient CPUage here (X5675's) as I don't think there's much gain to be had there, as long as the GPUs can be fed.
Good news is, I get in cheap on the hardware, relatively speaking. Bad news, I pay a bit more on the back end in power costs, and heat (which is good right now).

Well the one thing I learned from the 3900X is that you gain a massive improvement in memory speed and get to use what you paid for finally and the cpu core clocks for less voltage and power. The IPC gain and 2X better math performance of Zen is impressive too. As Tom likes to say, I'm a cpu core whore. I don't know yet whether the 3900X is going to work for Seti or augment my dedicated Einstein machine which makes good use of cpus.

I still would like to replace some old Pascal cards with Turing though.

I still like the term "I have CORE ENVY". To describe my urge to run higher and higher core counts. And I think you have it too, Keith.
Although I am budgetarily constrained I suspect that an "all" gtx 1660 Super of gpus (6) will outperform my current mix of gtx 1070's, gtx 1060's and a gtx 1660 Super while drawing no more power.

And congratulations on actually getting a 3950x at MSRP. I was expecting that to take till the middle of the spring.

Hey JimB,
Since the server is not updating when I ask for details about your box.... did you actually manage to 9 video cards on there or not?

Near as I can tell, 7 physical is the max that 3.61 BIOS on the Z600/Z400 family will support ... too bad, given the CPU headroom and risers I have ... but they have 7x and 5x legit 980s ...

Good on you. I would hate to think what the power consumption is like with 12 in total 980 S

Ugly ... Each 4-slot external riser takes a 700w Thermaltake supply for 4x 980s and a 200mm case fan, plus the 600 has a second 500-w supply for 2 more 980s and the stock 650w for the 600 itself with 2x 95w Xeons and 1 980, and the z400 has its stock 450w with 1 95w Xeon and 1 980. Last month total house consumption was 2400kwh, this month will be worse as I added 2 more 980s. Having said that, I think the power consumption per cuda core on the 980s is pretty well in line with the newer stuff.

Interesting I think I have to agree with you in regards to the power consumption of the 980 which surprised me

Hopefully, I shrunk this down enough to not be annoying.
Note that this is a basement with an open stairwell.
Enough heat rises that I only used 21 therms of gas heating the place; the 980s did the rest :)

Considering I've paid ~$100 each for the most recent of these 980s used on eBay, it takes it into the realm of the doable while letting me get close to competing with the "big boys".
