An off-duty Los Angeles police officer has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly shot a fellow officer while on a camping trip, the Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement.

The San Bernardino Sheriff's Department responded to reports of a shooting just after 1 a.m. Sunday and found a man who had been shot, along with two uninjured men. LAPD officials said all three are department employees, two off-duty officers and one off-duty supervisor.

Officer Ismael Tamayo, 44, was arrested after investigators with the sheriff's department determined he shot the victim, who is expected to survive, in the upper body, the department said in a statement. He is being held on $1 million bail.

The shooting took place in an unincorporated area of Apple Valley, about 90 miles northeast of Los Angeles in neighboring San Bernardino County. Tamayo was taken into custody without incident, officials said.

Investigators are still working to determine a motive behind the shooting, the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department said in a statement. The department said the three men had been camping in the area and shooting guns over the weekend.

Tamayo "has been relieved of his police powers pending the outcome of the criminal and administrative investigation," according to police.

"The events overnight culminating in the serious injury to our off-duty officer, apparently at the hands of another member of this department, give me great concern," LAPD Chief Michel Moore said in a statement. "I spoke earlier this morning with San Bernardino Sheriff John McMahon, pledging our full support of their criminal investigation."

He added, "I am thankful our injured officer is in stable condition and expected to survive. I am committed to determining what and how this occurred."

The usual suspects: Wee hours no-knock narcotics raid... at an incorrect address. Police don't bother announcing they are police, of course, as we don't want any evidence flushed down the toilet, right? Legal resident (an EMT) reasonably concludes they are being invaded and uses his second-amendment-legal firearm to defend himself and his girlfriend. Police shoot dead, not him, but his unarmed girlfriend, who is also an EMT. By this point do I even need to mention they are both black people? Of course not.

Still not overloaded by the incredible basic incompetence of the police involved? The man they were seeking was in custody at the time. They didn't bother checking.

For all those stories, the outcome is always the same and sad. Victims die. Regardless of any supposedly 'defensive' guns.


In contrast, are there any good old fashioned gun duels where both sides have an equal chance with their deadly toys and their deaths?

Fired Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin arrested in George Floyd's death

The Minneapolis police officer shown in bystander video kneeling on the neck of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who subsequently died, has been taken into custody, officials in Minnesota said on Friday.

Minnesota Department of Public Safety Commissioner John Harrington made the announcement, and said any charging decisions would be made by the Hennepin County Attorney's Office.

Harrington said he was not aware of any arrests of the three other officers who were on the scene on May 26. Those officers, like Chauvin, were fired by the Minneapolis Police Department the following day.

(The officer had 18 complaints against him prior to this...)
