Vic, Bitter experience with laptops of all manufacturers is that upgrading them by adding memory or swapping the hard disk only ever ends in tears, very expensive tears. Leave the hardware alone, all the internal power supplies (and there are lots) are designed to run with the configuration as supplied. Looking around me (in the stack of dead stuff) I see two dead HP laptops, one Acer, and a Toshiba Satelite- all but one of them died soon after adding more memory "because I needed it". Only the Acer died of old age and overheating when the fans failed and dragged the rest of the system to a smokey death. It certainly needs a PSU - have you checked with your sister-in-law to make sure she hasn't put it away somewhere silly - that would certainly save you a few bucks. Also, if it's been either run permanently on its battery, or not put into storage correctly it is possible that the battery is shot - once you got the external power supply, charge the battery fully, boot the machine, and see how long it runs on battery only - with a reasonable battery you should be able to do a couple of hours at least, anything less than an hour and the battery is toast :-( Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

I have a HP 635 laptop running 24/7 since 2012. I brought its RAM to 8 GB and its disk is now a 1 TB hybrid disk after the failure of 2 SSD. The OS is SuSE Leap 42.2, the CPU is a AMD E-450. Tullio |

Vic, Yeah I asked Her, the last time the psu brick was seen, was by a friend who was going to delete a bunch of personal junk, so all I have is the ac power cord, still a replacement is about $19.90, but that means I need to buy a cable for $13.31 to get free shipping, yes I can afford it. The psu I'm getting is a 90w, stock is 75w, stock can't be found, and this PWR+ psu brick has a 14' cord. I could find a 150w psu brick, if needed, I did look. My sister in law used a 90w psu brick. This laptop has 2 hatch's on the bottom, one for the hdd, and one for memory, I know enough not to go beyond two 4GB so-dimms, and Amazon offers professional installation, for the hdd and for the memory, the hdd/ssd swap would be a Crucial MX300 525GB SATA 2.5 Inch Internal Solid State Drive - CT525MX300SSD1 with copying of the data from the hdd to the ssd, the ram 8GB (2X4GB) Memory RAM for Toshiba Satellite C675-S7104 Laptop Memory Upgrade. I could do the ram swap, once I got the hatch open, since it only has 1 tiny screw, but I think I'd let a pro do this, as I'm not feeling up to this right now. The ram is $55.08, and the installation is $20.00. The Computer Hard Drive Installation - Laptop - Data Transfer - Up to 500 GB $39.55 The ssd is $159.99 for the 525GB ssd. If they won't do it, cause of where I live at, it's a bit remote here, I could, since I did buy an adapter and software to do the hdd/ssd swap with a while back, once I find it that is. Right now, it's mere speculation, since I just want to get the laptop running, but then I'm not feeling great at the moment. Savoir-Faire is everywhere! Vic. Not harping on you, but..................... Given the list of things you say you need to replace or repair, I should think that thinking about upgrading a 5yo gifted lappy would be about at the bottom of the list. Get the PSU, get it running, use it as is, and be happy with the gift. You are not going to increase the performance of that lappy much at all by sticking upgrades into it. No need to turn it into another money pit. Just my 2 cents, Vic. And I hope you are feeling better soon. Hopefully just some additional healing from your surgery. Meow. Some exceptions. I am on a MacBook Pro right now that came with a 500 GB hard drive. Replaced it with a 480 GB SSD. Massively increased performance and works fine. |
