Regarding the public relations damage that has been done due to the controversy that has arisen among SETI@Home participants, this is the text of an e-mail that I distributed, which I also posted on my blog, "OUR ETERNAL STRUGGLE". ************************************************* ************************************************* Greetings and Salutations to All my Kith and Kin and All the Ships in Outer Space: It should be unnecessary to write this e-mail message. But - - - , I just received a notice from one of the project managers at the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (i.e., "S.E.T.I.") scientific research project, one of many computerized scientific research projects distributed by the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (i.e., "B.O.I.N.C."), based on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley. The events at the University of California at Berkeley currently transpiring in the news are very embarrassing for those of us private individuals who volunteer our personal computers to assist in analyzing the raw data being collected and distributed. As many of you already know, I am one of the multitude of volunteers around the globe (many of whom are utterly confused by what's happening at Berkeley), and my own computer is used to analyze raw data for the following scientific research projects: Citizen Science Grid (various projects), Climate Prediction, Einstein (studying gravitational waves and pulsars), Large Hadron Collider (accelerator physics), Lattice Project (molecular evolution), Milky Way (imaging our galaxy), PS1 Optical Galaxy Survey (astronomy), Rosetta (three dimensional shapes of proteins), Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (i.e., "S.E.T.I."), SZTAKI Desktop Grid (binary number systems), and the World Community Grid (Cancer, Zika, AIDS, Ebola, Genomes, Tuberculosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Clean Water, Clean Energy, Nutricious Rice for the World). You didn't know an ordinary personal laptop computer could do all that, did you? In addition to those projects being run on my computer, there are many more scientific projects a participant may choose to take part in. Can you see the potential for how much good you can do by using your personal computer's spare time and unused disk space to help solve these mysteries of science? And, oh, how much damage is now being done to our image and efforts by the rioters and the administration at the University of California at Berkeley! Indeed, the project managers have been receiving many outraged comments and messages, with some supporters refusing to donate any additional funding to these projects. But, these scientific research projects are not associated with the rioters, nor (or so I've been advised) do the administrators of the University of California at Berkeley exercise any control over any of the various scientific research projects, other than providing them with physical facilities. I hope you'll ignore the rioters and the equally onerous decisions of the University of California at Berkeley administration, and join with me in participation and support of the scientific research programs that are so vitally essential for enhancing the health and welfare of the entire world. After all, there are so many scientific discoveries being made so rapidly, that there are not enough research facilities or personnel to adequately follow up on each new discovery, and that is why it's so important for private individuals to volunteer the use of their personal computers. If you wish, you may share this message with others. Thank you. . Is there an undercurrent regarding the possibility that some Seti@Home Volunteers contacted the Berkeley Administrators. Possibly threatening to withdraw from this important effort for political reasons? Clyde, that's what I understood. Eric was stating S@H does not = UCB |

...the UC administration neither knows nor cares that SETI@home exists. Threats of So, if In The Middle of The Night on A Holiday Weekend, Everything Concerning SETI@HOME is REMOVED and Brought to A Privately Owned Building, away from Campus, UCB would not CARE or NOTICE? Please work to disassociate seti@home project from UC Berkley or risk losing valuable supporters. The worldwide perception is Berkley encourages hate and violence at those who do not share their ideas. For good or bad the politics of UC Berkley are alienating supporters like me eager to search for ET yet don’t wish to be in association with hate. Thank you for taking the time to listen. |

Please work to disassociate seti@home project from UC Berkley or risk losing valuable supporters. The worldwide perception is Berkley encourages hate and violence at those who do not share their ideas. I assure you it is most certainly not a worldwide perception. That perception is only shared by the validated Alt-Right community that has taken center stage and is trying to convince the world their views are the One True Reality. The project isn't going to leave Berkekely. If people choose to leave SETI because they want to hold SETI responsible for what Berkeley does, then that choice is on them. SETI's goal hasn't changed, nor should anyone's interest in supporting that goal. |

Please work to disassociate seti@home project from UC Berkley or risk losing valuable supporters. The worldwide perception is Berkley encourages hate and violence at those who do not share their ideas. The problem is, the alt-right story isn't true about UCB. It looks like the entire invite was a publicity stunt front to end. The club that did the inviting never bothered to book the venue for the event with UCB! They just issued the invite to stir up trouble. Besides, where were they going to come up with her $50,000.00 speakers fee? Ticket sales? The entire thing was a stunt to make the university look bad, and to the alt-right it worked. |

The whole world doesn't think UBC is bad or anything in fact it doesn't even get a mention unless there has been some breakthrough or something . It seems like FaceBook has done it again and sterred up trouble because a small number of people in closed community's have closed minds . When are people going climb out of the trees and stop being animals with there tribal B/S . "your not part of our group so your wrong and where right as we got more likes and friends on facebook than you lot do " Give me a break and grow up people. Your all at fault for voting in the far right and engaging in wedge politics . So suck it up deal with the next 3 1/2 years of fascist B/S and then vote a more normal gov to power Seti@Home can all ways join the seti institute it's supposed to be a private org. :) |

Seti@Home can all ways join the seti institute it's supposed to be a private org That was my impression about it run by private donations and not part of a Uni but I wouldn't really know, only what I believed it was ?? Not that I think Seti@home will join them but it is a option even if it's like 1million to 1 chances |

Not that I think Seti@home will join them but it is a option even if it's like 1million to 1 chances If it is highly unlikely, then why bother suggesting it? Further, why should SETI disassociate themselves with Berkeley over this singular incident? Just because of the Alt-Right backlash? It's not worth the cost to the project to move on principle, especially when so many crunchers have been very outspoken about not wanting to help pay for the project financially (because they donate with CPU cycles and electricity, so, their argument goes, why should they contribute in monetary donations as well), so where's the money going to come from? Truly, the heat will blow over and it's not worth the effort. Sure, a few people will leave, but once again that choice is on them. They have a right to leave if they feel they can no longer support the project. And again, everyone should have known when they signed up that most scientists are A) liberal B) atheist, and C) also entitled to their own opinions (which are usually backed by data). Knowing that, why did those people support SETI in the first place? The goal hasn't changed. It's that they don't like to hear what doesn't suit their own agenda or worldview. They don't want liberal anarchists preventing someone from speaking, but they all want to leave when Eric speaks up. Hipocrites. |

Glenn, that's trolling, do you want to live under the same bridge as Clyde? hehehehehehehe that depends how big the bridge is and how wide the river is and weather I'm on the other side to where he is :) |

Glenn, that's trolling, do you want to live under the same bridge as Clyde? The width and length of the bridge constantly adjust as does the height of the river. |
