Some lessons in Old English needed by the author methinks, but I agree this NOT the place to bellyache!

If people are sending threatening messages to Eric over Facebook or other social media, or even via Private Message here on the site threatening to pull their support because Berkeley cancelled a speech (which was cancelled, by the way, because they didn't file it correctly, not because they didn't like the speaker), then this is EXACTLY the right place to bellyache.

i do not know why people want to riot. if certain groups are ignored then they will stop having their little tantrums. i would like to be able to donate funds to seti but my 500 dollar social security check does not go very far. all i can do is to process data. burkley is not one of my favorite memories. all the people protesting us coming back from vietnam alive. many things about this country can be made better but the want of one can rule the lives of many. what would be done back in the days of "the little house on the prairie".

My one and only comment on this , being a fellow vet (welcome home by the way....anyone else told you that yet?) will be that Berekley is and always will be it's own worst enemy..........

The white supremacist comment was out of line. . . But I'm not here to argue with people who throw insults because that is all they can do to express their disagreement with people of other points of view . I am a white independent who voted for Trump, my wife, who is from the Philippines also voted for Trump. My x-wife, (though I don't know how she votes) , is from Panama . So anyone accusing me of being a white supremacist is a complete fool. I believe in rule of law and free speech for all . However I won't leave the SETI project over a comment made by a pin head . . . and you sir are a pin head .

Agreed with the exception of the last comment
"Don't worry about it, nuthin' is gonna be O.K anyway...."

Those kids on UC Berkeley, including the staff and Regents, need to kick their fancy hats off their heads and get their butts kicked. Freedom of Speech never, EVER, meant creating a disturbance. They think this is the French Revelation? Just a bunch of no-nothings who need to be shut down. I served my country, the US of A, for 20 years in the Navy and I find this a disgraceful behavior.
Worse, I was born in California and will NEVER return to my Birth.

I see that this discussion has turned from knocking Eric to knocking UCB. Certain Uni's do have reputations as does London's LSE. Anyone attending there usually has fairly radical views. But isn't the important question whether the project itself is worth supporting. If it is then it shouldn't matter who runs it or where it is hosted.

No. It does not 'obviously' alienate 'every' white person. I am, and I am not, cause those whack jobs don't represent anything about me, so I have no problem with them being called out for being the waste of oxygen that they are. Nor do I have a problem with the anarchistic types being called out for equally being wastes of oxygen, if for different reasons. Hell. They should be, regularly, and loudly.

The best ever answer to "free speech". Until we can get past it...

I'm sorry the nonsense is bleeding over and affecting SETI. I just put in my little contribution $ to hopefully counteract the negative.

Try reading the very first post in this thread.

that why I stop SETI !

Even though Seti has nothing to do with anything that is going on, and less than no input?
Your choice.

Well, all I can say is I've been a part of this project crunching WUs since Bill Clinton was in the WH. I've been crunching them day and night on several different PC builds over the years, and I have no intention of stopping now, no matter what silliness transpires over at UC Berkeley.

Thank you SETI@Home Team for helping make sure my PC has something to do when I'm not sitting in front of it. And my power company would like to thank you as well. :D Be well, and stay safe over there!

That may already be the case.
Ppl always ask why we didn't find anything yet if "they" are really out there. There are many possible explanations, for example the famous Fermi Paradox. But I have my own thesis.
What if there are lifeforms out there which are thousands, ten thousands or even hundred thousands of years ahead of us in terms of civilization, technology, science and knowledge? What if there are lifeforms out there that are much more "intelligent" than we are?
They may be aware of us but have no intentions to contact us because for them we are just a bunch of greedy barbars? It could be easy for those beeings to trick us into believing that we're alone.

This is known as the Zoo hypothesis.

Being from north of the border I just don't get why people associate Berkeley politics to an organization that is run out of, but independent of the university. Yes universities, Berkeley in particular, are hotbeds of political extremism. I remember the riots of the 60's as well as the shootings at Kent but how does any of that affect SETI science? Maybe the university is no longer following the wishes of the founders of the Free Speech Movement or maybe it is just some peoples misunderstanding of events but that shouldn't have any effect on SETI@home or peoples desire to help explorer the universe. I've ben crunching data for SETI since mid 1999 and a little bit of 'weirdness' at Berkeley won't deter me from continuing nor should it deter anyone else.

Because a lot of people aren't really very bright. Facts have no effect on their beliefs, if they don't support those beliefs.

I think that we have to remember that not everyone is here for the science. There are some that are here just for the opportunity to state their particular mantra on an internationally read bulletin board, and in anonymity. It has been suggested in the past that there should be a much higher minimum level of RAC to post, to weed those types out.

If this thread is closed it will please some, but of course others will complain that free speech was being stifled. At present all views on all sides are being heard, in a democratic way, subject of course to standard forum rules. All the while it is encouraging people to make their first post in many years of crunching, I think it continues to be a useful gauge of the thoughts of the genuine long term crunchers and supporters of this project.
