Message 1997536 - Posted: 9 Jun 2019, 9:35:27 UTC - in response to Message 1997525.

Despite my problems with BT and the fact that I really do not like Linux, I have to say the results with the "special app" are nothing short of amazing

One of my GTX750ti's which managed around 20 minutes a task in Windows is now averaging 3.6 minutes (averaged using the first 80 tasks to validate).

That sort of increase is just plain silly ;-) 400 tasks a day as opposed to 72 !!

I have 3 spare 750ti's so I will let this one run for 24 hours, see what the RAC is then hopefully add another. (May need a better PSU)

Now I have finally "taken the plunge" with the special app, I will probably convert the machine with the 1060 as well.

As these machine are simply crunchers and I don't have to "use" Linux much I think I can live with it ;-)

Interesting times.
I have to admit that after years of being a Windows user (up until Win7) I find Mint very easy to navigate when compared to the later Window's versions (Linux has come a long way in the last few years and for most the knowledge of knowing Terminal commands isn't necessary at all) and most of my old customers agree (though they arn't harder core type gamers, but there are ways for those with some simple googling to get those games working).

And then you can compare my Mint powered 2500K@3.4GHz w/ two 2yr old 3GB 1060's that's now been running for 15 days compared to my what was my slightly faster (yet younger) Win7 powered 3570K@3.4GHz w/ two slightly faster 1060's (the later rig runs its memory at a much faster pace which makes a big difference to CPU tasks).

By next weekend I hope to have cleaned out, replace the CPU fan and add another SSD to my 3570K rig for Mint to go onto while reconnecting the 2500K's Win7 drives (it does have some workunits left onboard to complete), then I'll see how far 2 mid range rigs can get me. ;-)

For those things that I havn't found something close to in Linux I just have restart and BIOS select back into Win7 to do what's needed.

Cheers.

Of course, the down side is that my UPS test failed and now after the box lost power, boingmgr will now not load. Period.
The client starts and does its thing, run mgr and nothing happens.
Troubleshooting for another day, I guess.

When it starts, BOINC Manager writes a file containing the PID; when it exits it removes said file.
When you lost power, that lock file would still exist, and you can't start another copy!
By default, the repository version of boincmgr creates a file called "BOINC Manager-<your username>" (without the quotes!) in your home directory. So, for instance, I have a file with path /home/alanb/BOINC Manager-alanb at present... I presume the non-repository version does the same. Worth a look, anyway...

Shut down machine. Install video card. Boot.

Well I did and it did:

[2] NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti (2002MB) driver: 418.56 OpenCL: 1.2

Returning tasks every couple of minutes!!

Now what to to with the other two 750ti's ;-)

Thanks, Alan! That was indeed the issue. Appreciate the heads-up.

Two good, four better!
And given how the 750tis sip power, shouldn't be a problem if you can find the pcie slots. After all, 4 750s typically take about the same power as 1 980.

Doesn't take much CPU, and those X1 extender card/cable kits are sure cheap enough on either eBay or Amazon.

Get the highest quality USB 3.0 cables you can with the riser kits. And order some backup cables.

OK, feeling confident with my last linux machine I endeavoured to convert one of my old Dells to linux, with the pair of 750ti's

I thought I followed the same procerdure, but seems not all tasks are failing with

. . Hi Bernie,

. . I am not a Linux guru but that suggests to me either you did not set the execute permissions on one or more files or you have BOINC installed under the wrong user ... for what my opinion is worth.

I remembered discussions here about "permissions" so I compared the two installs and on the new one all the files had permissions set wrong and not set as "executable". Changed that and it worked;

https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=8731624

The CPU's are old so I am not crunching on them, but it doesn't seem to be holding back the 750's same sort of times as the first machine!!

The 24 errors were from the "permissions" problems, they errored so fast it took me by surprise!!

. . Yes, the speed can catch you off guard. I'm glad it was just that simple problem. GTX750/750ti cards are amazing little producers, quite low power yet they can crunch very very well. Those two rigs should catapult you well up the leaderboard :)

Message 1997876 - Posted: 12 Jun 2019, 1:08:34 UTC

I am currently running ubuntu with "enhanced x41p_V0.97, Cuda 9.00 special" and 2 nvidia 1070's with BOINC 7.4.14.

and am considering getting a "EVGA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti " for my computer (ID=8664531).

Is there anything I need to do to make it work beyond adding the card? (like software upgrades etc).

Is there anything I should consider doing before adding the card?

Thanks!

You forgot to set the gpu executable with the execute flag.
Never mind.

You will need to update the drivers to a compatible version if you haven’t already. You didn’t state what driver version you are running and I cannot see them because you have your systems hidden. You will need to have at least driver version 418.43 to support the 1660ti

You know this gets a bit addictive ;-)

My latest; https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=8732075

Which is actually the first one I put linux on with the GTX 1060 but did not use the "special app" so the results were less than spectacular so today I decided to redo the whole install and this time go with the special app.

As I merged them it still has a few tasks left from the previous incarnation

I must be learning, because apart from my monitor deciding to stop working midway through, this was a good install with everything working first time, even Boinc Tasks !!

It will be interesting to see how the 1060 does!!

Now I just need another 1060 ;-)

Even one 1060 crunching through the tasks in about 3 minutes will be fascinating.

. . To be pedantic 2.6 mins for Blc25 tasks :) But yes very productive.

I am saddened. ;) Here I am with 21 gpus spread over 6 machines (and 10 are gtx 1060 3GB's) and you don't even mention me.......

ROFLing.

Anyway. Yes, it is addictive. And just buy 1 more gpu :)
That is how I ended up with that many gtx 1060 3GB's.

oops ... I thought giving the computer ID would cover any info I didn't give ... sorry!

so I'lI upgr from driver: "390.11 OpenCL: 1.2" to current driver 430.26 and I should be O.K.??

Do I need to do anything to go from CUDA9.00 to 10.1 or is it "in the upgr driver??" (This is a neophyte talking here!!)
