Hi All,
A few years ago I started running SETI using BOINC on my Win 7 Pro PC. It is now failing and I've bought a new Win 10 with the "Anniversary Edition." I'm quite surprised as I have been able to set it up to look just like my old Win 7 screen. :)
One problem, I no longer remember HOW to make the nice looking SETI screen saver work?
Could someone give me a "step by step," starting from scratch, on HOW to get it going? I would appreciate !!

Oops! I forgot to mention I'm trying to activate the really nice looking SETI screensaver, the one that show lots of "noise" and rattles around, NOT the "plain jane" one that just shows BOINC. :)

Also, can each PC have its own "Preferences" settings, or is it a "one size fits all" thing? :)

Thank you!

Hi All,

I FIXED THE SETI SCREENSAVER PROBLEM!

Wanna know HOW? Read on, plz?

My old Win 7 Pro PC has an NVIDEA Graphics Card, while my new Win 10 Home PC has an AMD Graphics Card. It occured to me THIS was my screensaver problem?

My Win 7 PC displays the nice "noisy" screen screensaver that "rattles around", but my Win 10 PC did NOT, it only displayed the very BORING BOINC screensaver. BOTH PC's had the BOINC screensaver selected in Windows "Personalize."

I found that, if I viewed "Project Web Page / Account / Preferences" & then clicked on SETI@home preferences on my Win 7 PC, I saw all FOUR CPU/GPU boxes checked. One of the 4 boxes was marked for NVIDEA GPU. I unchecked the NVIDEA GPU box. I fully expected to see that the nice "noisy" screensaver on my Win 7 would STOP working, huh?

BUT, guess what? By unchecking THAT box, and then saving my changes, the Win 7 PC screensaver continued to work as if I had never unchecked the NVIDEA GPU box, AND, AND, more important, my Win 10 screensaver, which had only shown the BORING BOINC box on it CHANGED! Win 10 with my AMD Graphics Card all of a sudden started displaying the "Win 7 type" noisy screensaver I like.

Both Win 7 with an NVIDEA & Win 10 with an AMD are now identical on-screen. All I had to do was to UNCHECK the NVIDEA GPU box in SETI@home preferences.

YAY! Tra la lah, oh tra lah lah la lah.. Giggles!

Thank you,

No, that's not what the project preferences do. Via the project preferences you tell BOINC you want to download work for the CPU, the Nvidia GPU, the AMD GPU and the Intel GPU. You do not tell via here if it should use the project graphics, although you can set up the project graphics/screen saver here (tell it how many stars it shows, if it should oscillate and what background to show).

Here's the clincher: the only application that has the graphics application is the CPU application. So only when work runs on the CPU do you see the Seti graphics. If you run work solely on any of the GPUs, you have no graphics application, thus you see the BOINC screen saver.

Unchecking the Nvidia (it's Nvidia, not Nvidea) box will just stop BOINC asking for work for the Nvidia GPU, and if you have both systems on the same location, you now run out of work on the Nvidia GPU, until on that system only CPU work is asked for and yes, then you will see the Seti screen saver/graphics, but that's just because you only have CPU work on the system, not because of anything else.

mmmmm. I could not get the nice screen saver to work on the Win 10 AMD PC until i unchecked the NVIDIA gpu box on the Win 7 PC. :( then both PC's worked.

Maybe I should check the NVIDIA box again on Win 7 but uncheck the INTEL gpu box? but then that doesn't make sense either?

I wish I really understood what you're saying, but I really don't? :(

What do I do to PROPERLY "get work" done on BOTH Win 7 & Win 10 PC's, each with different graphics cards, BUT have the nice screen saver work on both?

Thank you for helping!

Hi Again,
I re-checked the NVIDIA gpu box again... I then let both PC's run for hours. The Win 7 PC with the NVIDIA card displays the really nice SETI screensaver just fine. But now the Win 10 PC with the AMD card is running the BOINC screensaver BUT instead of the nice "noise box" rattling around that I like, all I see is only the BOINC symbol and below it, in small text, it says: "BOINC screensaver loading," but it never does.

What to do? Any ideas? If I shut off running SETI on Win 7 will Win 10 start to work?

Thank you, Huggs

What to do? Any ideas?

This was already answered:
"the only application that has the graphics application is the CPU application. So only when work runs on the CPU do you see the Seti graphics"

So do you have CPU tasks Running?

How do I tell if I have CPU tasks running? One PC of mine has a working SETI screensaver and the other, Win 10 just 'flickers' every 5 minutes if I don't touch the keyboard. The BOINC screen pops up for an instant and quickly vanishes. :(
