No real significant difference between any of the first three tried.
sse4.1 was a tad faster, but was throwing errors periodically so I moved swiftly on to sse4.2 - which is in the early stages of testing - I need at least a week's worth of observation to make a call.

I've not looked at the FX results, nor have I done the comparison....

Quick look - FX clocked at 4G vs Ryzen 1700 at 3G - Ryzen is about 5% faster, but is doing 14 concurrent CPU tasks vs.4 on the FX. Thus Ryzen throughput is over treble that of the FX, with a substantially lower power consumption (although that is hard to quantify as the FX rigs have more power hungry GPUs which probably account for a large portion of the extra power)

Yes, the Ryzen is doing basically twice as many CPU tasks as my FX processors because of core count. But I just compare the completion times on similar types and AR's and can see that the Ryzen is much faster also. It is nice to knock off about 50W of energy consumption to boot.

I have a question. Running on Win.10 x64:
Please, can this be updated to more-precisely reflect the reality of today's GPUs which cost significantly more CPU time to FEED : NVIDIA 1070, 1080... and the likes ?

On my Ryzen 1800X (8 C. , 16 Th.) system with MB:ASUS PRIME X370-PRO, it takes up about 0.7 CPUs to feed the Asus Strix R.O.G. 1070 GPU with one WU of SETI@home v8 v8.00 (cuda42) windows_intelx86.

And it looks like this:
Running (0.393 CPUs + 1 NVIDIA GPU) ............ SETI@home v8 v8.00 (cuda42) windows_intelx86

host: https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=8254309

Thanx a lot for considering this.

P.S. Anyone with an Intel i7/i5 Skylake or Kaby Lake with HyperThreading Enabled running this SETI app on Asus Strix NV. 1070 GPU? How much CPU time of one logical core does it take there, please? Thanx.

One more question: Is there a way to "disable" AVX-tasks in a project - for example in Asteroids@home ?

I am convinced that the Win-x64 SSE2 or SSE3 WU will be faster on Ryzen than its AVX2 version. :-)

- but the server did NOT learn it, yet. So it is still flooding my Ryzen 1800X CPU with those slower AVX2 tasks... :-)

The CUDA apps always take MUCH less CPU support to feed the task compared to the OpenCL tasks. By nature any OpenCL task takes a full CPU core to support the task. This is evident across multiple projects. I do MW and Einstein along with SETI and they all use OpenCL written apps. I have found that since the release of the OpenCL SoG app here at SETI that it performs MUCH faster than the old CUDA50 app I was using. You just have to budget a full CPU core to support it. Even with using the default stock apps, you are able to use a app_config.xml file to fine tune the CPU+GPU resource allocation and override what the stock system wants to implement.

Looking at your recent Valid tasks, I see that you are running the CUDA50 app on your 1070. I think that you would do much better with the SoG app. So you just have to let the scheduler figure out your optimum app over time or go the anonymous route and select your own preferences.

Not familiar at all with the Asteroids project, so don't know if it has a Compute Preferences setting that allows you to select a non-AVX app. In my experience with FX and now Ryzen processors, the AVX apps are MUCH faster than the old SSE2 or SSE3 apps. Ryzen especially does REALLY WELL with AVX math.

Looking at your recent Valid tasks, I see that you are running the CUDA50 app on your 1070. I think that you would do much better with the SoG app.

With the right configuration values, at least 3 times the output they're getting with CUDA 50.

They're running stock, so it will take a while for the Manager to figure out which application is fastest (and hopefully get it right. It doesn't always work out that way...).

EDIT-
Although it is looking promising

. . Hi and welcome,

. . I was going to ask why, with a Ryzen 7-1800X and GTX1070, are you running CUDA42? But then I saw you are a newbie and the schedulers are feeling out your machines capability with stock apps. I would suggest you skip the slow and painful process of having inappropriate apps crunching tasks at a snails pace and go straight to downloading and installing Lunatics Beta6 (look in the following thread).

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=79704&postid=1839484#1839484

. . It should default to AVX for processing tasks on your CPU and I would suggest you use the SoG r3557 option for processing on your GTX1070 GPU (it is the best).

. . As to the seeming discrepancy in the display and your actual CPU use. The display is purely nominal, just a guideline. The actual reliance on the CPU will vary from App to App and from task to task and will be controlled dynamically as the task is crunched.

. . I hope that helps.

Stephen

. . Usually AVX/AVX2 is much faster than SSE versions. But on the Ryzen AMD are using I think 128bit AVX and not 256 bit AVX. I think it is Chris S who is running comparisons to see which performs the fastest in the real world. In the meantime if you do install Lunatics Beta6, when it comes to CPU processing you can choose whichever of the options are available so I feel sure you can nominate SSE3. I don't believe there are any SSSE3 or SSE4.x drivers available since Joe Segur left the project so choosing them will result only in running SSE3.

. . Hi Keith, it was a CUDA42 task that is concerning him. But I agree he would be well served jumping into Lunatics.

. . The fine tuning will come if/when he starts asking more question :)

AHA! AVX2 is the same as on INTEL? COOL!

Memory bound, you say? Hmm, I am glad I resolved the memory issue (was running the DDR-3200 at just 2133) by flashing the BIOS!
Now, the G.Skill TridentZ 3600 runs finally as DDR4-3200, as it should with Ryzen in this ASUS PRIME X370-PRO.

And... just a small issue emerged. I installed the Lunatics Beta 6 SoG app, it is running blazingly fast on the 1070! (Still just one SoG-app per GPU). Just sometimes (one in about 50 WUs), it ends up with a "computation error". It looks like this, on the website.... posting the WHOLE ERROR, so that it can be used by Raistmer (from Lunatics) to track down the issue even *after* the WU is assimilated and disappears from the web... :

Could simply be you are running an overclocked 1070 that is on the edge. Try backing the clocks down a bit or turning up the fan profiles. The BLC SoG tasks work the GPU harder so you have to allow for that. I looked at one of your valid tasks and it had an error that the app self corrected by a 30 second backoff.

ERROR: OpenCL kernel/call 'clEnqueueMapBuffer(gpu_result_flag)' call failed (-36) in file ..\analyzePoT.cpp near line 2548.
Waiting 30 sec before restart...

This was a math error. So the card is running too fast to produce valid math calculations at all times.

I had that problem over at Einstein with my factory overclocked GTX 1060. I was getting a bit over 1% invalids. I bumped up the fan speed and dropped the temp down to 66 C from 72. Then I slowed down the GPU clock a bit and the memory a bit and the invalids went away. The run times went up by 1.5 minutes to about 33 running 2 tasks at a time with 100% GPU utilization.
