Looks like there is an issue with the voltage regulation module (VRM). Here's a link to the article http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/evga-gtx-1080-1070-overheating-issue/?utm_m_medium=t&utm_content=bufferf37fc&utm_medium=socialm&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=DT-FB |

Hard to believe that EVGA would release high performance 1070/1080's with no thermal pads on the VRM's. The video of the 1080 going up in flames was illuminating ..... (har:har) ;-} Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Yeah I got 4-1070s that I'm going to have to get replaced. |

Looks like there is a VBIOs update and you can request thermal pads to self install onto your cards. Here is the link to the forums at EVGA http://forums.evga.com/EVGA-GeForce-GTX-10801070-PWM-Operating-Temperature-Update-m2573491.aspx |

Since I got impatient waiting around for EVGA to ship reference 1070 designs, I ended up just getting Nvidia reference cards. Avoided the RAM problem and avoided the VRM problem too it seems. Looks like the 1060s are also affected. VBios released for those as well |

It looks like thermals may not be the issue, rather some bad components might be responsible according to this set of measurements. But it does sound like the thermal pads and VBIOS upgrades are worth doing. I've got mine so maybe I'll have a go later this evening |

I ended updating the VBIOs on all 4 of my cards and got the thermal pads for the vrams and vrms in the mail earlier this week. So on tuesday I decided to go a different route. I got my hands on 4 of the FTW conversion kits to upgrade the cards to hybrids. I converted 2 cards so far and going to do the other 2 this weekend. Since I was going to be taking the cards apart anyway, I thought I would apply the thermal pads to the cards while I was converting them. Interesting finding....The hybrid kit comes with thermal pads on the copper adaptor for the VRAM already...hmmm...now how about that??? Seems someone knew the VRAMs needed to be cooled...... I applied the thermal pads to the VRMs after some figuring out how to config it with the new fan set up.... After all was done, got the 1070 to 2.06GHz at 30C... I'm going to post a video of the conversion of the card but probably won't be until late Saturday. Once I get it done, I'll link it here.... Zalster |

That's got to be some pretty efficient heat removal to stay that low. I'll look out for the vid at the weekend. |

As you can see I tend to be a little Frankenstein with my machine. The follow up video when I install all 4 cards will show a much cleaner set up, lol... https://youtu.be/uVaKa84du_8 |

Just curious, as I haven't had time to watch your vid yet, (though plan on it when I have a little downtime) is there a 10x series hybrid kit, or are you using a 9 series kit to do the conversions? I have a couple more of those lying around that were going to be going on 980Ti's, but not sure which would benefit more from them, the 1070 ACX or the 980Ti, if they would fit the 10x series, of course. Thoughts? |

Hey Al, The hybrid kits for the 900 series won't fit the 10x0s ACX series. While it would fit the 1080 reference, I wouldn't do it as that card is underpowered and you will eventually see throttling due to lack of power. First for the ACX series, there is a separate radiator and fan near the VRMs that gets attached to the PCB that comes with the 10x0s hybrid kit. You don't use any of the ACX design on the conversion. The second is there is a copper adapter that fits over the VRAMs and raises up over the chip itself. It does this as the copperplate of the pump is also has a raised surface that to it that sits on the raised copper adaptor and then extends down onto the chip. Does that make sense? You will need to see the video to see what I mean. Zalster |

Zalster, yeah, it does, thanks for the info. I got a great deal on the 900 series hybrid kits, and had a couple left so I thought hmmm.. Haven't priced out the 10x series ones, but I'll have to watch your vid and see the whole production on the swap over, and keep my eyes open for deals on the newer style hybrid kit. |
