Victor....
You don't NEED a motherboard.
You need to keep the lights on and keep kitty safe and warm.
I can spare you a little bit, but you have to promise it will go to kitty care and not your computer juju.

My bank account is a bit played out right now as well, because I gave in to an urge and bought a Marshall Kilburn and an iPod.

But, I can give you just a little bit. For kitty, Victor.
For Grace.

Meow.

If Vic feels that his thread has been hi-jacked, he can hit the magic red button. My guess is that Vic will be willing to share this thread with others in need.

Yes. But then again, it is up to Vic to set the rules and the tone of his thread.

Actually these "Go Fund Me" jobs are making us look like a bunch of bludgers to a hell of a lot of newbies (I'm sorry, but facts are facts).

Cheers.

Most forums online have a section where members are free to post whatever they want. That is allowed here, too, within the usual standards of etiquette. I really don't think the Help requests are hurting anyone or the SETI forums in general.

I don't find it offensive for somebody to ask for a helping hand if needed.
Certainly, anybody who finds it objectionable does not have to help out.
I am not rolling in dough here, but I have been known to help others out once in a while.

<<<"No commercial advertisements."

That seems to be the sticking point. I know Vic isn't commercial, or the other recent requests. I know they are legitimate and from people without other resources. But as others point out, someone driving by the posts will not know that and may make assumptions about the place. Also the more there are, it will attract more and the more likely abuse of this generous standard will happen.

Something for Fred to chew upon.

How could anybody seeing Vic's request perceive it as coming from a commercial entity?
And what of my past requests for folks to consider donation to my local animal shelter? They are non-profit. And certainly a worthy cause.
And Blurf's fundraising for the American Cancer Society?

Is Vic's request for help any less worthy of consideration?

I understand your point.

In the grander scheme of things, I don't think thread topics really matter to most people who connect to the SETI project for number crunching.

I think it takes a lot of courage to swallow one's pride and ask for help publicly, and to allow oneself to be judged by others in doing so. A sign of strength of a group of people is their willingness to come together and help each other out. It is up to each person reading to decide if they can, and are able and willing to help. If not, no one is making anyone do anything, including reading these types of threads.

BladeD: I appreciate your concern for Vic's thread. I have had threads of
my own go off topic and it's a wee bit upsetting. It is perfectly fine if
Vic wants to delete my post. If he had, I'd only want him to send me a PM
about it. I've done the same in threads I created. I've seen his response
that he's okay with my post. As far as having my own GoFundMe thread,
people see it and decide to donate or not. At that point they start to
ignore the thread, as one would expect. What's the point of revisiting if
you've already decided you could or could not help out? None, imho. I
jumped into Vic's thread to let people know that my GFM goal is still far
from being reached. Just a little reminder, that's all.

Wiggo: I disagree, but then the only way we'd know for sure would be to
ask, or to wait for someone new to say something.

I've only seen three people (myself included) post a fundraising request
for themselves (vs. for a non-profit organization), that I recall. Have
there been more?

Asking for help if you actually need it is ok to me . Like a medical problem and buy that I mean a serious problem not covered by anything else or organisation .

But asking for money to upgrade a computer or buy something you could buy if you just watched your penny's and gave up a few comforts for a while is wrong and offensive to those of us that actually go without for a bit to get said items

I do have a personal dislike at begging but that comes from having to live on the streets and seeing first hand how people can missus it and become dependant on it .

Only ask for help if there is no other way and I have found there is nearly always a way but then I do live in a country that does not try to run people into the ground so you will die earlier than you should .

Zoom I lost a HD a few weeks ago but I am not asking for help . I'm also disabled .

I also have just got the N.B.N broadband on with optus Fetch box but seeing as they did not tell me I have to pay a extra $15 for the subcryption guess what I have decided to do not pay and go without pay T.V.

I proberly could kick up a stink and get the subscription for free seeing as they where not totally honest in there advertising but no I won't . Even thou I have kicked up a stick about it and got then to change there offer to everyone else .

That computer is running on a old HD that has win Xp until I can buy a new HD exactly like the one that stopped and then I can change the pc board on the drive and access the info at least and copy the contents to another drive.

There is all ways a way and that means going without for a while , I have a friend here at seti that is very disabled and in a lot worse a situation than both of us but you know what he does he works for himself and the guy is in a wheelchair has only one good leg and it is also stuffed but you don't see him coming here and asking to be funded when his equipment stops he does what I do figure something out to pay for it and if that means working and putting up with some pain for a while he does .

When you ask to often you fall into the habbit of always asking and not thinking and figuring out another way or going without and why I find it offensive

well if you could afford a few buck's for postage then I would be asking someone if they had a MoBo spear they would kindly give you to replace the MoBo that's gone caput and offer to reimburse them for the postage at least then your meeting them 1/2 way you may find that said person will say no worry's about the postage .

It may mean you will end up with a slower system as they may only have a older MoBo for a core 2 with the chip that would at least help you out of the tight spot your in .

Something to think about next time . Asking for cash is not a good look .
