...Glad I asked first, my "prime choice" of an Nvidia GTX970 would have blown your budget by a factor of at least five :-( So, that narrows the field down to the "what is available": Nvidia GT720 or GT730 are just about in your price range You might be able to pick up a second hand Nvidia GTX750 (or maybe even a GTX750ti) on ebay for that sort of money which a very good cards in terms of performance and power consumption - that would be my choice in that price range. As to AMD there are a few that are in budget, but as far as I can tell their performance for calculations (that is running SETI@Home) is a fair bit behind the Nvidia cards costing the same. Out of production (like the GTX750) and not as effective for SETI as the GTX750. Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

Hi, The "Best" card in this instance is going to be the highest spec card you can get for your budget. Before you jump in and buy the quaddro, shop around and see what other cards you can get in the same price range. Ideally you want the highest clock speed, and most stream processors (CUDA cores). Memory isn't so important for SETI as long as you have at least 512MB. I'm going to assume you have chosen Nvidia over ATI in this instance. A few things to take into account: 1. You'll get a higher spec card for the price going for a GeForce rather than a quaddro, simply because the quaddros are aimed at the professional/autocad part of the market and are more specialised. This specialism isn't required for SETI. 2. Make sure the card supports CUDA..some of the older cards do not support it. 3. Before selecting your final card for purchase - compare the specs of it on here against other cards in the same price range. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nvidia_graphics_processing_units Hope that helps a bit at least! regards Andrew |
