Woman arrested in crash that killed 2 girls. DA issues warning about cell phone use\

A woman authorities accuse of causing a Dec. 3 accident that killed two young girls was arrested Friday morning, the Erath County District Attorney said in a statement.

Alyssa Litwin, 33, faces two charges of manslaughter, one charge of aggravated assault, four charges of endangering a child and one charge of tampering with evidence, the district attorney said.

... In the news release, Erath County district attorney Alan Nash said he usually doesn’t comment in detail on pending charges. But he stated, “It is important for the drivers of Erath County to be warned that local prosecutors and law enforcement view cell phone use that takes one’s eyes off the road, even for a few seconds, as reckless.”

Might be a good idea to make sure the load is safe ...

Los Angeles police said the explosion was possibly caused by a propane tank being transported inside the vehicle.

There are reasons for the statuary declarations on freight & postal items about not containing dangerous goods, and posters on the walls about what those items are. Unfortunately too many people think those requirements don't apply to them. Same for the storage of such products- eg Tianjin (Yeah, it was a hazardous chemical storage facility, unfortunately they were also storing all sorts of other chemicals in addition to the ones they were actually authorised to store there).

Twenty-eight injured in Lisbon tram crash
Reports said the tram came off the rails on a bend at the bottom of a steep hill, before hitting a building.

The tram operator, Carris, confirmed the derailment but said there were only "slight" injuries to 28 people.
And the photographs show that the traditional, probably wooden, tram body shell has completely disintegrated.

On the other hand, in the Croydon tram crash in the UK two years ago, with a rigid modern monocoque body, 7 people died from a similar cause.

Truckies often cop a lot of flack from other road users (and often it's not the truckies fault), but it's nice to see them getting praise every now & then.

Facebook post thanking truckie for guiding couple through north Queensland rain goes viral.
"The water was lapping both sides of the Bruce Highway and in some parts, it was over the road," Ms Clarke wrote.
"We noticed the truck moving over to the left and I asked Jay, do you think he is pushing the excess water off the road for us? "It was so bad that I could see only his brake lights at one point.
"It was unsafe to stop so I committed and tucked in behind the truck and he guided me, braking frequently and putting his indicator on the side that there was an upcoming hazard."
She said she had a sick feeling that if they stopped they would be in more danger, so they followed the truck until he turned off at a pub just before Mackay.

"Jay got out of the car and met him as he got out of his truck to thank him," she wrote. "His name is Footie and he is from Melbourne, and just so humble.
"He said I could see more than you, and if you were my family, I would only hope that another truck driver would do that for them."

The sooner they are available, the better IMHO.
The new high-definition cameras have already detected more than 11,000 drivers a day a using their mobile phones during a month-long test during October, Roads Minister Melinda Pavey said.
"Shockingly, one driver was pictured with two hands on his phone while his passenger steered the car travelling at 80kph, putting everyone on the road at risk," she said.

If you want to climb trees, get out of the car first.

I was going to commend their parking efficiency. Perhaps we should adopt that mode in cities too?

Talk about lucky.
Police video shows car spectacularly launched into tunnel roof in Slovakia.
Slovakian police have released video of a spectacular single-car crash which shows a BMW being launched into the air off a concrete barrier and hitting the top of a tunnel.

Despite images showing extensive damage to the vehicle, which crashed into the road after hitting the tunnel roof, police said the 44-year-old driver did not sustain serious injuries from the crash.

Not enough speed used to reach escape velocity. :-D

Cheers.

It's always dangerous to be stopped on the side of a busy road, and this illustrates that fact -

5 miles of 15-25mph twisty ancient possibly 1930's curves on SR138, too fast and it's either fly off the road or into oncoming traffic, yeah I traveled this road, now I have an idiot light on to investigate, which happened within 20 miles of home on Dec 25th 2018.

Caltrans needs to spend some money here, getting in or out quickly is impossible.

And Semi Trucks stay off of this route as the curves are way too tight.

Yeah tight hairpin curves, no shoulders, no turnouts, most don't drive or fly Miata's or Ford Escort zx2 Sport Hot Coupes(Mazda drivetrain in the zx2), Caltrans was last I looked was spending $23 million on upgrading a part of sr138 to 2 lane freeway standards complete with on/off ramps as funds allow that leads to this area and I have an automatic transmission in the zx2, so far plans for this section are not online and I've searched.
