Charlie Alliston: Cyclist detained over pedestrian death. 50 states, 50 laws http://www.ncsl.org/research/transportation/pedestrian-crossing-50-state-summary.aspx California has one thing correct, a bicycle is a vehicle. So your ticket on a bike is points on your license. And that is a big thing for those on provisional licenses. |

Charlie Alliston: Cyclist detained over pedestrian death. Yeah, and I see so many who ride bicycles against traffic, kids and adults, adults ought to know better, Me when I rode a bicycle, I always rode with traffic, I never had a problem with moving vehicles. Which is why kids and some adults say they are riding against traffic, wait until they get a traffic ticket, or have to go to traffic school. Pedestrians in California have the right of way, this I think is same across the US, some idiots cause they have a drivers license, think the road is only for motor vehicles with 4 or more wheels, it's not. The incident reported appeared to be on a footpath, so naturally the pedestrian has right of way. However here in Australia on the road, vehicles have the right of way. On a pedestrian crossing they are supposed to give way to pedestrians- but that doesn't mean you just walk out on to the road without checking to see if the traffic is slowing down to stop for you. And even though vehicles have the right of way on the road, you are expected to take every reasonable measure to avoid some idiot if they decide to take a walk in traffic. Grant Darwin NT |

Think mapbooks should start including pipelines, just for construction workers. http://call811.com/ wrote: 811 "Call Before You Dig" was created to provide you with a nationwide, easily accessible resource when you are digging. Every dig requires a call. |

You live in a little world of your own. It's probably because they use Sat Nav's for cars, at under £100, rather than the HGV Sat Navs which start above £200. |

WRONG I do not even own a satnav, I carry and use an earlier edition of the above mentioned map and so far this year I have clocked over 45,000 miles with 16' high multi-decker trailers. The only times that I have had to reverse and turn around have been due to serious RTA's that have caused total road closure. Got caught out by this one Monday evening http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-berkshire-41322559 Had to reverse over 1/2 mile before being able to turn around. Kevin |

Unfortunately a lot less money is being spent on the road infrastructure, things like white line painting, signs obstructed by vegetation or are so faded they are unreadable, this is on top of the potholes and badly worn out road surfaces. Some of these may not seem too much of a problem if you know the area, but for those that don't they can be an annoyance or worse. Kevin |

We can only hope that this is reported widely in Holland.Indeed It would seem wise for all European nations to review whether British cyclists can be trusted on their roads, Mr S. Given your oft-mentioned grievances of past weeks, I am heartened to note there has been a shift in focus, of sorts, sir. :-) @Kevin Olley You are not alone in your map reading and navigational skills, Sir. Satnav remains an unnecessary gadget to many, and will continue to remain so for myself. :-) |

I used to buy Thomas Bros map books, then the internet came, and slowly that became a thing of the past. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

I used to buy Thomas Bros map books, then the internet came, and slowly that became a thing of the past.Which is why more & more "incidents" are being recorded because too many fail to use the Mk 1 Optical drive, the Mk 1 cpu & the Mk 1 database :-) |

Most important of those is the Mk 1 Optical Drive. It never fails to amaze me the number of drivers attempting to turn into obviously closed roads (bollards and signs all over the place), or try to get to the other side of a substantial "water feature" (river) because "Brook Street" exists on both sides of it.... ...& the GPS says they can drive straight across :-) I know. I asked my GPS for directions to Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor and it directed me to drive into the Pacific Ocean from Santa Monica Beach California. |
