That time again. SILENCE AND STRENGTH His medals lay in the sideboard drawer, When I was but a lad, I never knew what they were for, I just knew they belonged to my dad. He took them out in November, To wear just once a year, When a nation did remember, How a country lived in fear. He never spoke a word to me, Of where he went, or fought, Or even of the victory, That his sacrifice had bought. He bore his silence in respect, Of those who fought and died, His pride was in his comrades, But quietly he cried. I wish he could have told me, So that I could have shared his pain, But the sights he hid from me so boldly, Must never be repeated again. Reminds me of my Dad. He served in the Navy in WWII, but wouldn't talk about it to any of us, until after I joined the Navy myself. And with me he shared only a few stories, mostly the good times, and a couple of scares at sea. Now I have found the pictures, of him and Shipmates I cannot name, on South Sea Islands and Anti-Aircraft guns, swabbing decks and loading cargo. Battleships and Cruisers, Destroyers and Transports. He and his Mates fed them all, fuel and ammo, food and mail, spare parts and movies. Someday I will hear the stories, but not this day.
