I am running seti on this computer. Is it possible to download another copy to a flash drive connected to this computer? Dave Nelson |

Do you mean the installer, the actual program to run or the data (ie work units)? |

The installer, the actual program. Dave Nelson |

You can always put the installer on a thumbdrive, I do that. Not sure about the actual program, but I would think you could. To have the program running on a thumb or external drive requires you to point the installer to that drive during the installation. I've never done the actual program, but I did have it where the data was on an external drive. But that was some time ago. Others might know more. |

That's my problem. I don't know how to point the installer to the thumb or flash drive. I don't expect to run the program from the flash drive. I'm just looking for a convenient way to help others get started by installing the program for them. Of course I can always to it the conventional way. Maybe its just not one of my best ideas. When you download the installer from the server save it to the thumbdrive instead of the default location. For the simplest configuration you just have to download the BOINC installer and run that, then connect to SETI@Home. This is because the required applications are downloaded automagically when required. For optimised applications then you have to download both the BOINC installer and the Seti@Home (Lunatics) installer - the latter does not come from SETI@Home but from one of the third party providers. it is pointless to install seti on a machine that does not have web access so go to the seti home page and install it. if on the other hand you want to be able to run seti from a memory stick when you plug it into a computer any computer there are ways to do that too. so what in a lot more detail do you want to do? |

If all you want to do is help people install the program, you only need to copy the installer to the flash drive. You copy it like you would copy any other file to it. Then you can run the installer on other machines right from the flash drive. There's no need to run the installer and have it unpack the program onto the flash drive. |

If you are just looking to put the installer on a thumbdrive it's pretty easy Just download the installer to your computer. Next put the thumbdrive into the USB port (if you have never done this before, windows will probably tell you it is installing the drivers to read the device. Wait till it is finished) You should then get a pop up window asking what you want to do with it something along the lines of Removable disk (F:) Click Open folder to view files It should then cause another window to open showing you the contents of the thumb drive (if you didn't get this pop up window then go to start button, click on it and then go to computer and click it and then look for devices with removable storage and click on it) Don't close this window Go to the start up button on the lower left hand of screen and click it From the pop up navigate to computer and click a second window should pop up, now under the upper right side you will see Favorite Desktop downloads recent places Click on downloads This will now show you all the items you have downloaded Look for the Boinc installer or zip file, which ever one you want. I just use the installer that I have previous used when installing on my computer. Click and how the right button down. Then drag it from the downloads window to the window showing the contents of the thumb drive Release once you are in that window. It should now be coping the installer Once you are done, you can close both windows On the bottom of the screen, on the right hand dise you will see a little up arrow. Click on that, it will expand and show you numerous items. What you are looking for is something that looks like a USB plug. Move the mouse over it and right click on it. It should give you 2 options, pick eject Udisk It should then say "safe to remove device" You can pull out the thumbdrive now and move it to another machine Once you get to other machine, just plug in. It should repeat the first part asking what you want to do. Open the files, then drag the installer from the thumbdrive onto the desktop and install onto the new computer. You might be able to just run the install from the thumbdrive, not sure thou. I always just move it Hope this helps Zalster |

You really spent too much of your time to explain the simple "How to Copy files" If he really don't know where the browser Downloads files - every browser have a Setting to "Ask where to save each file before downloading" Â - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :) Â |

You really spent too much of your time to explain the simple "How to Copy files" He was just trying to be helpful. Not everybody is a computer whiz, and some find step by step instructions help them get where they wanna go. Why bash Zalster for being a good samaritan??????????????? It's ok Mark, I've learned to take everything Jord says with a grain of salt. If I speak too plainly, It's because I realized along ago that not everyone has a doctoral degree. My patients really don't like it when staff talk technical terms and expect them to understand them....lol So everyone gets treated the same. If it's too simple then they will let me know, otherwise it's best to make sure there is no doubt. (Because people are afraid to admit they don't understand certain things) In this case, he's not knowing how to copy the installer, reminds me of my dad who likes to video chat but can't remember the steps to do on the computer to turn it on. (he holds a degree in Physics and work as a Rocket Engineer for NASA back in the day) But at 85,his memory isn't so great anymore. So I write down the steps on a notebook so he can refer to it. Otherwise he would never get online and chat with his grandkids. So I believe in the old acronym KISS (Keep it Simple Stupid!) Referring to myself in the last part. Because not everyone has a PhD or Doctoral.... I'm done here, hope you got that installer transferred ;) |

Dave: If the computers you want to install BOINC & Seti@Home on are connected to the Internet, the normal way (download from the website) is the easiest. If those computers are NOT regularly connected to the Internet, you may be setting yourself up for a LOT of extra work, transferring Tasks from connected computers to non-connected computers, and completed work back the other way, using that flash drive. I would recommend NOT doing it. Donald Infernal Optimist / Submariner, retired |

I've learned to take everything Jord says with a grain of salt. Great, but do know that my nom de plume is Ageless, a name that before this very post hadn't been in this thread yet. If I am that much at the top of your brain, that you're confusing me with genuine others, then perhaps it's time to take five. |

So I believe in the old acronym KISS (Keep it Simple Stupid!) Yes, that was my post all about - don't waste your time to explain how to add 2+2 (unless it is a pleasure for you) Just say "Copy the file to wherever you want. If you can't find the file - ask". He already asked several questions so will not be "afraid to admit they don't understand" And to answer earlier post: of course the installer can be run directly from USB stick It remains unclear to me if the OP wants exactly this (to distribute the BOINC installer) Â - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :) Â |

Thanks to all for trying to help. My failure too understand and follow directions in no fault of yours. Sure can. But you are also living proof of my assertion that you CAN teach an old seadog new tricks, it just takes longer. (8{) Glad you are still willing and able to share your knowledge and skills with others. I asked earlier, but you didn't answer - where in the USA are you? There might be a fellow Setizen close by who can be of direct help. Donald Infernal Optimist / Submariner, retired |
