interesting article circulating. Not sure how ligit it is though. http://www.news.com.au/technology/science/extragalactic-radio-waves-a-mystery-scientists-say-alien-life-forms-could-be-responsible/story-fnjwlcze-1227484939850 |

I'd heard of this in one of the reports that the link referred to as being received in the last fifteen years. Seems we're not much closer to explaining it. Intriguing. Thanks for bringing attention to it, Dazza1. Would be nice if they could at least rule out the faulty microwave theory :-) We have nothing to fear but fear itself. Apart from pain. And maybe humiliation. And obviously death. And failure. But apart from fear, pain and humiliation, failure and the unknown and death - we have nothing to fear. Who’s with me? |

This is old news ---about 15 years old. If it contained a message than we would have decoded it by now. More unfunded sensationalism. We have discussed this on seti boards a few weeks back. |

This is old news ---about 15 years old. If it contained a message than we would have decoded it by now. I admire your confidence in our abilities. It's a pity they don't extend to ruling out a faulty microwave eh? :-) More unfunded sensationalism. We have discussed this on seti boards a few weeks back. Does your lack of further interest as to the phenomenon that is producing the signals - mean you already know the answer? If so - I am sorry I missed your post on that :-) We have nothing to fear but fear itself. Apart from pain. And maybe humiliation. And obviously death. And failure. These micro burst radio emissions seem to be for a ship that is far away burst communication makes sense greatest amount of message sent in gamma wave lengths. The message appears as a blast a flash at gamma wavelengths. Then again 4 pulsars are near this area of space. It could be natural causes. |

If so - I am sorry I missed your post on that :-) As I said: old news and old posts. Sorry you missed my previous ones on the subject. I don't claim to be any kind of authority on Astrophysical events but often play the skeptic to dampen down what I feel is unwarranted hype in this entire endeavor. In SETI no one knows the answers; that's why we keep looking. I think that I posted it is most likely a natural phenomenon of the nature of a brown dwarf rotating about the configuration that produces a quasar. Since it was seen in the same direction over several years by different observing locations, I made the leap of faith that it was truly coming from a far distant location out in the Cosmos. I do believe that we could have found any purposive information in this message if it were there. I base this speculation on my graduate study in signal processing (correlation, convolution etc.), information theory and extensive work in Microwave data processing .At these frequencies even a short burst could contain a lot of data or information differing from noise. I also opined that I thought that it was not likely that an advanced civilization could modulate the amount of energy emitted by a quasar. All very speculative to be sure but I expect there to be an explanation put forth for this phenomenon in the near future similar to the explanation of the cause of Quasar bursts which were also touted to be possible alien beacons or messages. |

Thank you for taking the time to summarise for me, William. I believe I first heard mention of seti during a kids tv news roundup, where the bursts referred to in the article were being discussed. Until I had a computer set up and running classic units, my dad didn't hear the end of it. I won't put you through a repeat performance ;-) We have nothing to fear but fear itself. Apart from pain. Bet there'll be no follow-up sensationalized media reports leaving the conspiracy theorists to believe it was real. |

Typical tabloid stuff to get copy .............. National Enquirer is a tabloid, and they broke the John Edwards's Story. Don't knock the tabloids, Men in Black would agree. :) |

Tabloids are certainly run by lifeforms, whether or not of this world is a matter for conjecture. YES, but certainly not an intelligent form of life form! :D non-profit org. Play4Life in Zagreb, Croatia, EU |

Typical tabloid stuff to get copy .............. What was the John Edwards story, I missed it. I know he is supposed to be a psychic reader but I'm sure it is a con of some sort Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. Did some online inquiring and discovered that the John Edwards referred to here wasn't the one I was thinking of, but instead was the politician. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |
