@ Richard Haselgrove: Nice pics, I thought things from the Devonian Period were extinct, I guess at least one still exists.
Thank you. The Devonian seemed to be in at least three minds about where it was going. This side said it was the Atlantic Coast Express, going from London Waterloo to Ilfracombe via Exeter. The other side was taking passengers to join a liner in Southhampton...

Those are both in the direction of the pointy bit at the bottom left of Great Britain: also pretty hills, I'm told, but nowhere near where the engine was headed, Oxenhope in the top middle.

They may look fast, but in reality they are quite slow, with a top speed of only 250kph and a normal running speed of about 160kph. They are also quite heavy at about 450t per eight-car set.
The ride was pretty good (as I would expect for a heavy train), but the acceleration was "tame" by European standards. Most trains are all-booked seating, but a few are a mixture of sit where you can and reserved seating (with no indication to say which seats were reserved) - result was I had to turf someone out of my seat - if you have a reserved seat you MUST sit in it, and if you occupy a reserved seat you must move when the person with the reservation turns up.

Lone Star Adventure: Sanders Train Collection & Museum of the American Railroad

A one-of-a-kind model train display, valued at more than one million dollars is about to be donated to a North Texas train museum, fulfilling a long-time wish of the the man who created it. We are making two stops; a home in Dallas and in Frisco, at the Museum of the American Railroad. http://www.museumoftheamericanrailroad.org

Any idea when Tornado will be there?
If she comes, I doubt she'll be stopping.

From The Northern Echo

100mph! Landmark speed clocked by Darlington loco Tornado

A STEAM locomotive has reached 100mph on a mainline rail network for the first time in half a century on tracks passing through the North-East town where it was built.

Darlington's Peppercorn class A1 steam locomotive Tornado clocked the speed during a test run on the East Coast Main Line between Doncaster and Newcastle in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The owners seem to be concentrating on the mainline charter market, and want to be able to keep up with the traffic of modern diesel and electric locos. So, I suspect her outings on hilly, curvy branch lines like the KWVR will be few and far between.

They are fined, but not heavily, when livestock escapes onto major roads -- unless they take rapid remedial action.
On railway the duty of protection lies with the railway infrastructure manager, this is all to do with "ancient" legislation that was enacted back when the majority of the UK rail network was established.
In the particular case of the cattle on the station platform it would appear they entered the railway through the "normal" pedestrian entrance, so it becomes a very interesting discussion point, and one that the lawyers will no doubt make a lot of money out of......

Different than the open range American West, where if you don't want the cattle, you put up and maintain the fence.

Over thousands of track miles, and on both sides? I don't think so.
Yes, many thousands of miles on both sides. You have heard of a cow catcher haven't you? Then again in a large section of the American west Bison roamed before the railroad tracks came. Yes the railroad had to put up and maintain the fence.

Did my first day of the season at the museum on Sunday. North Shore 749, single car. In the middle of getting it ready, I had to drive out and unlock the gates to the public parking lot. Also had to open a few barn doors. I was wondering about my ability to do this work, considering the current medical problems I haven't really discussed here. I was rather winded by the time we were out and ready, but I was able to handle it by sitting down during the trips, which I really shouldn't do. We ran six trips and put it away.

We had a pair of private cars, Charter Club and St. James Place (owned by Charter Wire Manufacturing), sitting on our track 2 for nine days so the owners could entertain some clients (or something like that). Union Pacific came to pick them up a bit after 6:00. I took some pictures of this, but this is not my picture and not on our property.

This Saturday is the annual Safety Meeting and Rules Review, followed by the debut of the all-new rules test for those who are up for it this year (I'm not). I'm on the 749 again on the 30th and May 7th.
