The BOINC forums are back. Still with errors here and there, and a broken CSS it seems. But back.

Edit: And lots of messages missing. They must have loaded an old backup or something.

Maybe for once it's better they are missing. I don't really miss that outburst that was there, do you? And I suspect that the issuer of the outburst doesn't mind either. :)

So not that old a backup, just by an hour or so.

Great, the User Wiki is for the moment totally gone.

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /wiki/Main_Page on this server.

For the rest of the pages, errors, usually the same.
And everywhere else -bar the BOINC forums- I have to log back in.

Saving for prosperity. And in case things go down again.

Matt Lebofsky, on BOINC forums wrote:
Just to mitigate some confusion. Jeff and I informally help BOINC out from time to time because of the natural dependencies between BOINC and SETI@home. The BOINC "servers" is actually just one server, which is an old donated frankenstein machine recently prone to crashing. I've been trying to get BOINC moved to another server but a worthwhile stable machine has yet to materialize. Also the time and coordination to disrupt everything to do this migration to whatever new server also has yet to materialize.

Over the weekend the root filesystem got corrupted somehow and was unfixable. I suspect a bad PS caused some fs corruption during various recent unexpected reboots. I was able to get a temporary web server on line, and then on Monday I made this other server the temporary (and perhaps permanent) new BOINC server. This *was* a former compute server for SETI@home, so we're down one machine on the S@h front. So be it.

Of course we do backups of that machine. The mysql database I recovered at first was a red herring - it was an old mysql dir masquerading as the current one (hence all the posts missing since 2013). I had to get a new version pulled from the lab's backup tapes (which took all night as they were in process of doing some maintenance). We could do a *better* job of backing things up so recovery is faster/easier, but the budget line item for my BOINC salary and server hardware upgrades for the past N years has been $0. Anyway, lessons learned, etc.

Wiki User Manual is back. Nothing lost, but more so gained as we had an update of the Mediawiki software.
Compute with BOINC/ Software development wiki is also back.

That leaves Alpha, which is in disarray and where logins don't stick, and BOINC Wide Teams which has errors still on the site.

Still got one mySQL error in my administrator window, but assume that'll get fixed as well.

I think BOINC still has some problems as it shows that I have 52 Active tasks and I only show 38 active tasks in both BOINC Manager and Boinc Tasks or am I just looking at something wrong? http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=7451398

Resend lost tasks is disable at Setiathome at present.

This thread is about the Boinc Website being down, since recovered, so it's a bit offtopic.

As Boinc is now up again I will lock this thread to prevent it being used for posts that would be better answered elsewhere.

OK that didn't last very long did it!! :-)

And we're back again. Still haven't had an answer from anyone what was going on. Well, did get an answer from Rom, but he didn't know what was going on.

Any thoughts?

As far as I know, the way that gadget checks if a project is up is by pinging its scheduler and checking to see if it answers. The BOINC web site doesn't have a scheduler. It also happens at times that only the forums are down, but that the rest of the domain is still up. Or that other parts are down.

Now they're planning on putting all sites of BOINC (main, forums, alpha, download site, both Wikis, BWT) in separate virtual machines. Or maybe that's what the outage was for that they've already done that. Anyway, you'll then need a gadget checking the actual sites for life.

When it doesn't load, chances are high it's down. ;-)

Well we seem to be back up.

Wonder if that big Seti data copy had anything to do with it?
