To get on topic. In the Stargate series all of the big alien devices were powered by what they called a ZPM (zero point module) that got it's energy from wormholes. To get on topic. A Zero Point Module is a large, translucent group of crystals about two feet tall with a circular base. The devices glow yellow when active, and are a dark shade of orange red when inert. A ZPM houses a pocket of subspace-time known as the quantum foam (subatomic wormholes constantly opening and closing and fading in and out of subspace). Zero point energy is extracted from this pocket until it reaches maximum entropy, at which point the pocket collapses, leaving behind a useless shell. (Suggesting the subspace pocket universe acts more like battery, than powersource itself) Source. Member of the People Encouraging Niceness In Society club. |

To get on topic. I speculate that the main power of their use would be from a Star...so something similar to solar or solar-thermal based principle! After all, it's an abundant source of the power...we just need to use it better! Also, come to think of it...a Harward team is making ecological version of solar panel in CEP2 project on WCG...you can read more here: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/research/cep2/overview.do If you want to join in, please use a link on my signature...we get BADGES for new neat participants that join in! I was speaking of the robotic aliens which will come and visit us as suggested. What power source would they use for their robotic bodies. |

To get on topic. But how small could a fusion reactor be constructed. My concept of an AI robot is a machine approximately the size of a human and without a power cord. william did you see the Terminator !! The T-3 was powered by a hydrogen fuel cell , so should not be a problem for E.T |

Bob D. & Chris S. My concept of an AI robot is a machine approximately the size of a human and without a power cord. Why? I would suspect the form to be more compact & efficient. The only reason to be in humanoid form would be to blend in. I would assume the AI's first priority would be to connect to the internet. With the connection to all sorts of cameras, data bases it would have limited need to move about. Also the smaller the form the easier to transport. The computer power of your phone would have filled a room 50 years ago. Smaller, Faster, cooler seems to be the evolution of processors. Hydrogen fuel cell? How much would it weigh, how long will it last on a single fill-up. Where will they get refills? |

Hydrogen fuel cell? Probably not make it with one fill up but there's plenty of ICE that can be turn'd into Hydrogen so it would only need to last a day or 2 and then it can be refuel'd from any body of water once it got here . Or carry a few extra cells on there belt and just swap them out when it runs out . |

It just isn't that easy. If it was we would have already left petroleum behind. We've been watching Sci Fi movies so long that many people just assume that mobile energy sources are already in use beyond our current battery technology. Maybe it's around the corner or more likely decades away. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. To get on topic. Maybe it's something like in Rama series...the robots take a hibernation on a long journeys - it's easier 4 them, that to living organism, unless we talk about bacteria... ;) So they only do some maintenance...few jobs...everything can be run on auxiliary fusion or fission reactor (thorium, 4 example)... & when a ship comes to the next star system...all things come to wake up & come alive...by harvesting some of the star natural energy (magnetic, photonic, thermal, etc.) That's only my idea...might be wrong...we r on a early stage of development! ;) non-profit org. Hydrogen fuel cell? Hydrogen fuel cell is not very efficient! why? - hydrogen is a fuel, that is low in energy compared to thorium or uranium reactor! - you have to have a cold fuel tanks for a hydrogen...there is no abundant source of the hydrogen in vacuum of Space...(unless u mean to go 4 a refill in a gas cloud) - if you have to take comets, you have to: melt that water, purify it, extract hydrogen from it (which is not energy efficient) & store it in a tank! - also, all tanks on EARTH leak Hydrogen atoms...even Hondas FCX has a problem with that! even though it has a special glass plated, several layers of tank 4 storing Hydrogen...it still leaks - Hydrogen atoms r just that small, they go though, between other atoms in the layers of tanks! - Hydrogen fuel is only a good source on a water based planet...not in a Space! again, only my opinion & knowledge...maybe someone else knows better? non-profit org. I think there will come a time when through nanotechnology, and further advancements in memory storage, and CPU's, that a human's brain will essentially be able to be copied into a computer. What happens after that will actually be bigger than AI if independent "thinking" and emotions bloom from that copy. The mind is a weird and mysterious place |

Where do they get the energy to disassociate water into Hydrogen. |

How did Robot Data function in Startrek? Things like that are never explained. How did the X-wing fighters in Star Wars store enough energy to travel across the galaxy? That is the one common denominator in most all science fiction that keeps it fiction. The power source. How did Robot Data function in Startrek? He ate lunch at the studio commissary. |

He did eat, maybe he had that fusion reactor from Back to the Future II that converted food to electrical energy. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

How did Robot Data function in Startrek? He has some kind of reactor inside in chests...don't remember it accuratelly! But it's supposed to work a LONG, LONG TIME... ;) non-profit org. Play4Life in Zagreb, Croatia, EU |

Most likely they would use nano technology. You need substantially less energy to run something very small. (if you have the Technology) |
