As I said (please re-read) update was installed in automatic mode w/o user consent. That's the issue. As I already mentioned in this thread. I left a Windows 7 VM running with auto update enabled. Then I came back it to to find it running Windows 10. The only purpose of that VM was to see if an auto install of Windows 10 would happen. It would seem that if auto update is enabled it is taken as consent to install Windows 10. Well MS aggressive marketing seems to be working here & also causing some issues. Have had 6 systems in this week (4 laptops, 2 desktops, Intel/AMD) all with the same issue. ALL had gone for the "Free" update to Win 10 & installed it. On the final reboot, systems got stuck in an "automatic repair" mode with no progress. Fortuately all are regulars who I have recovery disks for. Have another 5 coming this weekend with the very same issue. All systems were running Win 7 Home 64. WHAT are the odds that they all made the same mistake? |

WHAT are the odds that they all made the same mistake?100%. The mistake was believing without question what M$ said. Those not learning from the lessons of Millennium and VISTA are now reliving those lessons. "Sour Grapes make a bitter Whine." <(0)> |

Hmm.. I'm not entirely sure what to make of this one: [url=https://www.infoq.com/news/2016/06/visual-cpp-telemetry] Recently Reddit user "sammiesdog" posted claims that Visual Studio's C++ compiler was automatically adding function calls to Microsoft's telemetry services. The screenshot accompanying their post showed how a simple 5 line CPP file produced an assembly language file that included a function call titled "telemetry_main_invoke_trigger". From AskWoody.com regarding June 2016 Patch Tuesday: Reminder: We’re still at MS-DEFCON 2 – don’t install anything Posted on June 15th, 2016 at 05:13 Many people are having BIG PROBLEMS with KB3159398 on Windows 7... Best Advice NOT TO INSTALL (unless you want to spend lots of time trying to fix a broken system). The Group Policy Object problem with KB3159398 will probably only affect workers attached to corporate networks - that may include some people here, but they'll know who they are. And they won't be doing their own updates anyway. I only saw one non-security update, and it said it was for time-zone changes only. I went ahead and installed, and no ill-effects so far. |

And they won't be doing their own updates anyway. Owing to the fact that I don't care about time zone changes elsewhere, I hid that one as well. Also since I have IE 11 disabled, I hid that update as well. |

Anyone got a recent list on all the different updates we need to remove? Been a while since the last one was published. Thanks |

Anyone got a recent list on all the different updates we need to remove? Been a while since the last one was published. Thanks You are right, but i think the last list is still ok, cause the last bunch of updates was mainly (as far as i can tell!!) mainly ok... ?! {edit] Ok, you still have to hide the (re-released) updates, that pop up again from time to time, but they are already in the list... There hasn't been anything new to avoid since version 8 of the list. Linux laptop: record uptime: 1511d 20h 19m (ended due to the power brick giving-up) |

Quick question, are any of the updates in the new Win 7 rollup that they just released a month or so ago for those of us who'd like to shorten the update process when loading a fresh install, that need to be removed? Or are all of those included with it A-Ok, and it's the next run of Windows update online that needs to be scrutinized closely? Just want to be clear on it, as I've used it once since I downloaded it, it does shorten the list of needed downloads, but at least for me didn't seem to significantly shorten the time that the 1st update after it was installed took to grind thru to show me the next set of supposedly needed updates. |

I know last month's rollup was basically a waste of being a rollup, as it only contained two fixes. Apparently, my WSUS service decided to forget how to access the database, so I haven't been able to see what updates have shown up for this month (my laptop has updates turned off, and this machine only contacts WSUS). So I'm trying to figure out how to get the WSUS service working again. I ran the WSUS installer and it detected that it was already installed and asked if I wanted to remove it, so I told it yes, and it goes straight to the "finished" screen saying "setup encountered and unknown error and no changes were made." It doesn't explain anything, and the event viewer just says there was a failed installation, but doesn't give an actual reason. I suspect when I was testing a GPU in that machine a few days ago and the system locked-up, it may have corrupted the DB. Of my 7 machines, 3 are on Win10. Two others not upgraded because the upgrade didn't load (tried twice) and I am keeping this one (an Acer Travelmate running Win7 Pro) so I can still write Word documents without having to pay £106 for l Office 365. |

Does your company have an employee benefit that allows you to purchase major software at a greatly reduced cost? My Office Pro 2007 was getting a little long in the tooth on my Win7 Ultimate (x64), and I was able to purchase Office Pro Plus 2016 for $26 USD ($10 for d/l'ed software & $16 for backup CD) through my wife's company. I chose this version of Office as opposed to 365 because I didn't want anything on Microsoft's cloud. One of the first things I did was to disable the One Drive. You might want to give it a try. I don't buy computers, I build them!! |

Any opinions on the May 2016 rollup: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3161608 ? Especially this component got my interest: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3161647 It is a new update client... :? Aloha, Uli |

Any opinions on the May 2016 rollup: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3161608 ? June* 2016 rollup. And yes, that is a new update client buried in there, and no way to isolate that from the rest. Sooo.... you can either roll with it.. or just decide this is the point in time where you turn updates off and make sure you've got a decent antivirus and don't go to strange websites. Anyone tested the new update client already? From reading the corresponding article (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3161647) it seems to not include the telemetry and win 10 "enhancements". :? * An optimization that addresses long scan time for updates that's reported on some computers. Will wait for further investigation Aloha, Uli |

To be completely transparent here, I just outright don't trust any of the new clients that have been released after 3035583 first showed up. Sure, the October client fixes that memory leak issue.. but it isn't clear about what else it does in the background. So personally.. I'm not trusting any of the new clients. But that's a choice for each one of you to decide on your own. Linux laptop: record uptime: 1511d 20h 19m (ended due to the power brick giving-up) |

I may not have been exactly clear in my question about the big Win 7 rollup update a few posts up, the one I am referring to is the Update for Windows 7 (KB3125574) which has a large number of updates rolled into one convenient package, which lessens the number that have to be downloaded when doing the windows update the normal way online. Anyone know much about that one and what (if any) undesireable things may be lurking inside? Or did they remove all the controversial stuff before publishing it? |
